Coaching Carousel

Jeff Van Gundy.
With Mark Jackson as the Associate Head Coach. JvG is a brilliant suggestion. With Matt as GM. Would need the approval of Mike R…..wait….. we are nuts!!!! We have the best coach in ALL of basketball. Enjoy the moment. We are lucky. Finally. Stop the nonsense. Deep breaths. CRP!!!!! Let’s go Johnnies!!!!!

Obviously right guy can win there, but IMO seems like a tougher spot than it was 5-10 years ago.
I think that if you are a good coach looking for an opportunity to compete and a window to succeed at the high major level, UVA is a great spot.

What has been coming in the ACC for a few years has arrived: after Duke the conference is wide open. Teams that have historically had no shot to crack the top 3 can now realistically hope to do that if they play their cards well.

Steve Forbes is doing exactly that at Wake which is a much smaller school and without access to public school dollars. Jeff Capel was making some progress in that direction at Pitt before he sort of collapsed recently.

Somebody could go to UVA and have a real chance of getting to the top 2 or 3 in the conference every year - if they do a good job there.

Compare that to the SEC or the Big 12 where if you are a guy like that you're basically just sticking your head in the meat grinder to get to basic competitiveness in the conference.

I guess if you hit a homer on him you have your coach for the next 35 years.

Just don't know if it's close to a homer.

Be interesting to see the timeline in which they announce the hire and utlimately he takes over.

Duke is a legit Final Four contender and could be playing into April.

The Portal opens March 24. Miami's season will end on March 8 since they will not qualify for ACC Tourney. Does Jai stay at Duke thru post-season while simultaneously he recruits for Miami? I have to believe he steps away from Duke.

"Kyle Neptune, Villanova (15-12, 8-8 Big East)

It’s a similar situation as Syracuse: a once-proud program that lost its Hall of Fame coach and has completely fallen off. But like the Orange, the Wildcats should never be this bad. Neptune went 35-33 his first two seasons, missing the NCAA Tournament both times, and there’s no chance the program will tolerate a third straight miss. Neptune has certainly been better this season — Nova beat UConn and St. John’s — but inexplicable nonconference losses to Columbia, Saint Joe’s and the worst Virginia team in a decade are impossible to overlook. Short of winning the Big East tournament, a coaching change appears inevitable. Temperature check: Hot."

ESPN debunked Zags pretty harshly and said he's the focus of the search but he hasn't been offered yet/expects a "traditional timeline" closer to end of regular season. He's also their "defensive coordinator," which would be hard for them to stomach leaving in March. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-b...-associate-coach-jai-lucas-focus-miami-search

I think if he gets announced in March, he can build his staff (maybe starting with his brother) and have them do some recruiting while he's on Duke's sidelines. Tricky, and another reason why the portal should not be open until the end of the NCAA tournament.

Zags wasn't the main reporter on this, it was Peter Ariz who broke it.

Evidently Scheyer and others are not happy how this was handled. It is going to happen but they don't like the fact it was leaked.

Evidently it was Miami booster who leaked it to Ariz.

Gotta imagine Utah admins were looking at this option for a while and had mind made up. Can’t believe this year is too far below expectations ..perhaps trying to avoid a Kevin Keatts type late run

Well, I don't think any program wants to avoid a conference tournament championship and final 4 type run. And also, if the interim goes on any type of serious run they are almost handcuffed into hiring him full time especially as it would look like the reason for that run was specifically because of the job the interim did.

The Interim the rest of the way at Utah is Josh Eilert, the guy that was the Interim at WVU last year after all the Huggins stuff happened. Pretty crazy becoming an Interim at two different schools in back to back seasons

People will hate this, but Will Wade lives to schmooze and cheating no longer exists. But timing obviously not right.
Wade was just playing the NIL game a bit too early... and he got caught... let's not pretend Coach K / Roy / Self / even our beloved Rick didnt do the same. Kids always wanted to get that "official" to Creighton cause of the bag they dropped just to visit.

NIL has always been around- only diff is now guys like Repole, who pay the kids, can talk about it.

I would be down to make Wade a "strong a$$ offer" lol

We're having the best season of our lives and we're talking about Rick's replacement.

Never change Redmen.com. Never change.
some of us are capable of walking and chewing gum at the same time... in this case... enjoying an amazing season while also offering opinions on the future lol

I do think the "succession" talk is premature. But Rick brought up some interesting points in the interview. He said STJ is a very unique job, and they have to be able to connect with the Wall Street alum/be from this area and understand New York City + get the pro sports town angle of it.

On paper, who really qualifies for this?

The dream candidates are Billy Donovan (still a dream but he does have close connections with Shanley and Pitino) and Dan Hurley (only if he bails on UConn for the NBA and predictably flames out). Edit: Jay Wright is another dream candidate. Would be shocked if it happens. Maybe by then he's bored broadcasting + the instability of the NCAA actually subsides so he wants to jump in.

After that, the list seems pretty rough.
Sha -- better coach than he's shown, but can he also be the CEO of a big time program? This was a dreadful year.
Claxton -- bad year for him at Hofstra
Robert Jones -- probably 1-2 coaching jobs away from being a serious candidate
James Jones -- totally different beast than the Ivy league, not sure it makes sense
Mike Boynton -- mediocre results at OK State. Probably would be a perfect AHC like he is now at Michigan.
Matt Langel -- big step up from Colgate and same issues with James Jones candidacy.
Richard Pitino -- not from the area but obviously well-suited. Honestly looks like the best candidate based on this criteria
Kevin Willard -- not sure he'd be interested but he'd probably be more of a home run hire than anyone would want to admit if the list dwindles.

Assistant coach list:
Mas
Kimani Young -- left STJ under I think not great circumstances but could be misremembering. He's due for a HC job, but this is a tough first one.
Luke Murray -- more of a CT guy

Am I missing anyone obvious? It's not really helpful that the NYC/NJ coaching pipeline seems to have dried up a bit.

Just for historical purposes . Mike Rice , Kevin Bannon, Paul Hewitt,

Rice was a favorite of some on this Board , after Norm as was Hewitt .

None of these will ever Coach at the College level again .

Neither will Fran Fraschilla . Bobby Gonzalez

Paul Hewitt with a bench of Pete Gillen, Jim Baron, Pat Kennedy with Matt Doherty as DOBO is any veteran Redmen.comer's dream team.

There is no debate.

Make it happen Shanley!
