Coach Lavin on TV

I could listen to Lavin talk all day. The man is just great.[/quote

I acknowledge that i have a bias, but he just comes across as being very genuine.Greg Anthony and coach look like they have great chemistry and could talk college bball all day long.

I like Greg Gumbel but it looks like the producer is constantly pushing him to cut Lavin off. Mabe just my imagination.

I don't know if that's unique to Lavin. I had the same impression that Gumbel is being told to move them quickly, but it seemed to me to apply to everyone. They seem to have a pattern of 3-4 topics and all 4 analysts need to have a comment (Sir Charles gets as much time as Lavin...he's funny, but not very insightful), and then Gumbel cuts somebody off as he rushes to the next topic. Maybe they should listen to the commentary and let it go sometimes when it's really good. Did you here Coach Lav talking about the Michigan State-St. Louis game before it started? He was great and could have talked about those teams for 10 minutes and we all would have learned a ton. Instead, he got the cursory 10 seconds and pushed it by another 5-10 through the dirty looks and left me wanting to hear more. His appearances this weekend should help us continue to bring visibility to the program. Good stuff.

Any one think him being on tv could have a negative impact on our current players/roster? I realize that being on tv is a lot less strenuous than coaching, but what message is that sending to the team, or how is the team taking his actions? It could be like Lavin was saying, "I'm too sick and weak to travel with the team and coach on the sidelines, but I'm healthy enough to go on national tv and act like a celebrity." To me, that sends a bunch of mixed signals, and that could be dangerous.....

That's just crazy. His players know what he's doing. Tv appearances are great for the program. Lavin recuperated, is bringing in an excellent recruiting class and is now selling the program. I think you're totally off.

Lavin's appearance as a commentator on national TV will add gravitas to him with 16, 17, 18 and post grad 19 year old blue chip recruits.

If you are blue chip HS player listening to him speak and his knowledge of the game, why wouldn't you want to play for him.

Not only that. He's putting his face out there all day long on prime time. He's the face of SJU basketball. There is simply no downside to this, only upside.

I listened to Lavin more critically this weekend than I have in the past, when he was a full-time broadcaster. He displays a greater knowledge of the game, and an ability to break it down, than I had realized.

Always great to see Coach on TV. Nothing like having potential recruits see a TV personality & coach knocking on their doors or watching them play. Kind of appeals to their large egos.

Why wouldn't you want this guy as the face of the university? He's well respected among his peers, he's intelligent and loves learning, he embraces history and references it often, and he is pretty much the definition of GQ. Kids see this slick, well rounded man who has got it all going for him, yet is still humble. Perfect face for any university, but especially one in NYC attempting to get its mojo back!

Guy is the absolute man! I very much look up to him.

Is he continuing at CBS this week?

No - as of now. He brought Moe, Phil Greene, Dom Pointer and Branch to the studios over the weekend.

When he wasn't on the broadcast he spent his time on the phone talking to recruits.
