Front page story about Coach Lapchick.

His all-time St. John's team, that is to say, only those that played for him:

LeRoy Ellis
Kevin Loughery
Tony Jackson
Jerry Bush and
Dutch Garfinkel

The sixth man he selected was Bill Kotsores.

Bob Zawouluk, played for Frank McGuire.

Do any of you remember Jerry Bush or Dutch Garfinkel? I have no knowledge of them whatsoever. Kevin Loughery was recently in NY to receive an award - perhaps the CHSAA HOF? The article appeared in the tablet

Dutch played for St. John's from 1938 to 41. Graduate of Thomas Jefferson H.S. in Brooklyn. Great passer.

A member of The St. John's Hall of Fame.

Jerry Bush is also a member of The St. John's Hall of Fame. Captain of the 1937-8 team that went 15-4. Team had W's vs. Duke and CCNY.

Suggest that for Father's Day you ask for The 100 Years of St. John's Basketball book by Jimmy O'Connell which can be bought on redstormsports.com.

A great book about St. John's basketball

I'm pretty sure I have a copy at home of that issue of Sporting News. Agree also about the 100 Years book, an excellent pick up.

My kids are way ahead of you. I was given the book a couple of years ago along with some great SJU apparel. Thanks for the help JSJ!

.I for one never heard of them But I saw TJ play and he was a phenom Shot 30 footers went to the hole and rebounded Has to be in schools top 5 best

Didn't Dick McGuire play for Lapchick? Surprised he wouldn't make the list

He played two years for Lapchick, sandwiched around WWII and two years for Coach McGuire, his numbers for Lapchick were not that great. that's why he was left off.

Think it might have had more to do with playing time than numbers: Dick McGuire was never about numbers (not sure if the NCAA even kept track of assists back then); he was about intangibles.

He was the leading scorer the two years he played for McGuire, he was the 4th leading scorer for Lapchick. I'm not questioning his intangibles, I'm saying Lapchick had five better players he coached.

I'm sure Sonny Dove would have made Coach Lapchick's list , if he continued as Coach, after 1965.

Sonny was one of the all time SJU Greats but, played his last 2 seasons for Louie.

Frosh didn't play varsity in 1965, so Sonny was a Soph in Joe's last season. That Team won the NIT for Coach in his last season.

I didn't see the top five, but along with Sonny, you would also have to consider the McIntyre bros.

I was at SJU when the McIntyre brothers played. Nothing against either one of them, they were good players but Bobby didn't put up big numbers and Kenny didn't rise to the level of those previously named. A guy who had a couple of great seasons before injuring his knee was Killer Davis, although I'm not sure if he played for Coach Lapchick.

He didn't. Coach Lapchick retired (alas involuntarily) following the '64-'65 season, and Killer first suited up as a soph in '70-'71.

SJU65 -- Was there a fight in the stands behind one of the baskets that Ken Mc was involved in? I was a freshman in '65-6, and he had already graduated. I heard something about it but never really got the whole story. I also was led to understand that's why they stopped selling tickets to those seats.
