Coach Keady

One has to ask the question, what input does Keady have with regard to this team? After all we have a HOF coach sitting on our bench. It is an enigma that our players are performing as they are with the likes of Whitesell and Keady at Lavins disposal. It is not as if SJU is not ponying up big dollars when they assembled this entourage of coaches and assistants. Either these players are completely ignorant to the fundamentals of this game, or these highly paid assistants and coaches are not doing there jobs! I don't get it!!!!!!!!

Or possibility number three is that Coach Lavin does not ask, or refuses to listen to , any advice Coach Keady may have to offer.

Let's be frank. Lavin hired Keady for the PR benefit period. If he was really interested in gaining his strategic knowledge he could have shuffled the deck and made him an assistant. It was very nice of him to help out his retired mentor, but I think he could have spent SJU money more wisely. Like and respect Keady, but in this limited capacity, why bother?

Lavin has disproven that "Xs and Os" do matter.

It should not be difficult for St.John's to find a "Xs and Os" coach.

John Beilein has the charisma of a shoe salesman but has been a big winner on all college levels including community college because he is a very good Xs and Os coach.

Wasn't Whitesell wasn't hired for that reason?

Yes and he looks like a complete loser. How do they pick these people?

Successful teachers require willing, attentive students.

Keady's post game ;interviews sound very little like limited.

Interesting post game comments today...cited lack of preparation as a big negative...Used reading scouting reports as an example...

Imagine being retired on a pension, you made great money in your
working years, and someone you know comes along and says I'll
pay you $200,000 to put a yellow pad on your lap and give a talk
to the Red White club before games and (wait for it) live in NYC
for six months.

Moon, you need to post more..There is also a tax advantage strategy to the 6 month residency for Gene, means he keeps a lot more of his $$$ than a full time NY Resident. What a Gig!

Plus, he doesn't have to make a emotional investment in the performance of the team.. The Purdue Keady would have had 2 technicals and been tossed from this game within 10 minutes..Calhoun always got tossed when a blow out loomed.. It's Coaching 101..

I honestly feel that coach is afraid to flip out on his players because he knows they'll just tell him to go fly a kite.
Seriously, what do you think Dangelo or Rysheed's reaction would be if Lavin got in their faces during a timeout today?
I don't get the sense they respect him at all.

So let me get this straight. A poster calls Lavin an idiot and you think it deserves to be deleted yet you call both the players (previously) and now an assistant coach a loser?

Hmmmmm
Ok

It sure looked like they mailed it in today. It was an unbelievably poor performance. They came off as not wanting to play for him.
The 2nd half of the Xavier game was bad and the 1st half was putrid.
I was at the MSG game in January 1982 when Georgetown pressed us and we were down 41-9 and lost by 30.
That team bounced back, I hope this team does as well. Fingers crossed.

I've spoken to Keady a few times now since he arrived here. As an aside, he is a very direct, up front kind of guy, and I've been surprised by his candor. Whether I asked him about the team, how he likes New York, his role, or his new marriage - all of his responses appear completely honest and devoid of any deflection or diversion.

On the subject of returning to college basketball, he said he was immensely enjoying being here. After retiring, and his wife passing away, he wasn't doing much of anything when Steve called, and he was happy to be of service.

On the subject of what he does, he says he observes games and practices, and then offers Steve his opinions. When I suggested that practices after bad losses must be really rough based on what he writes on the pad, he said, "No, not really. I write down things I observe, matchups that didn't work, players who deserve to be on the court, that sort of thing"

I agree with Beastie that Keady gets to do something he loves, while enjoying NYC instead of Indiana for 6 months and probably has Lavin's ear privately.
The Keady of his heyday though would never put forth a team that played this badly , without some sort of demonstrative response. AND, NO SMILES.

Either he would have put his shoe up some players A -S or, gotten 2 technicals to fire his team up.. Something for sure..

And, Keady would not have recruited Players that are so obviously deficient in basic BB skills..Plus his Purdue teams always played hard, tough, Midwest physical Basketball. And, in Indiana, there are more than a few kids who can shoot the lights out too. His players might not have jumped over buildings but, the game is to put the ball IN the Basket, not jump over it!

The HS ratings of these players is showing how inaccurate they are in evaluating ability to play this game..One of the things that comes to mind is how disparate these players skills are to one another. Lavin hasn't been able to harness any of their abilities for a team purpose.NONE.

And, that's where our fan disappointment peaks.. We've seen Lavin Coach for 4 years, most of these players for 3 and, who can say this team is on the right path? Poor play continues on the Court, with stretches of a team incapable of even the simplest BB tasks. Some of the breakdowns of this team are so flagrant that they exceed belief.

We grab onto a belief that the next game will be better and it isn't.We have a winning record because we've beaten teams with lesser abilities and, struggled against some of them too. I hope this isn't another nightmare in the making mid season but, something is terribly wrong with the performance of this team and has been for some time.

NYS tax is 10%. States like Florida have no state income tax. It's the reason that Keith Hernandez makes sure he doesn't spend 1/2 a year here and sometimes will not be around if the Mets begin the season in NY just in case they make the post season

Also to Coach Keady's credit while winning so many games and so many Coach of the Year awards.........I believe I once read he recruited only 3 McD AA's in his career at Purdue, one of them being Big Dog. That means his kids were basketball players that could be coached up as opposed to jumpers and decathletes.
