Coach Carnesecca At His Gentlemanly Best!

It amazes me how many fans don't know that SJU won the '86 BE championship game. It was one of the greatest games in SJU lore. The Ron Rowan jumper with about 15 seconds left in the game and the Pearl Washington dash up court on the next inbound play only to be rejected by Walter "The Truth" Berry. What a game with SJU coming back from 19 down in the second half. I was privileged to be there. Then I remember it was almost 30 years ago and realize that many on this site have never experienced those glory years. However I think we're going in the right direction and many of us will get to know what that feeling was like again.

SJU won the world series that year also if I remember correctly. :)

Got a great looie story.... MSG... during halftime of the 86' Big East title game vs. Cuse... believe i was 14 at the time... my dad hands me a black&white photo of looie and joe lapchick sittin next to each other on the bench... tells me to take the pic, hands me a magic marker and tells me to go behind the SJU bench and ask lou to sign it... unfortunately, we were down 9 i think & he did not appear to be in a very good mood... so i scheme/weasel my way to coach and tap him on the shoulder.. i was PETRIFIED... looie turns around and as soon as he saw the pic a big smile came over his face... he said sure kid, grabbed the marker, signed it & patted me on the head... he then asked me where i got the photo & also said he thinks it will bring us luck in the 2nd half... at this point i was in shock, but managed to thank coach lou & took the pic back to my father... my father couldnt friggin believe i got him to sign it... and thats looie in a nut-shell..... just a great, GREAT human being!

Nice JD
Did the Redmen come back to win?
.
Yes, thank God!... believe it was 70-69... with about 11 seconds left Ronnie Rowan hit a running 15 footer...SWISH!!... Pearl Washington took the inbounds pass and raced the length of the court.. only to have his shot SWATTED away by walter berry as time expired... SJU WINS!!... GARDEN ERUPTED!!
Amazing win! Walter Berry blocked Pearl Washington layup attempt to take lead with 1.5 seconds to go, clock ran out as ball bounced along floor. What a shot by Rowan, I was about 15 feet away behind the basket he was shooting at.
Um, you don't get any points for blocking a shot. :) :) :) But I know what you mean as that play obviously saved the game for us.

Nice story except for the fact your father is a dope for bothering Louie during an important game! ;) :)

Great post.... also we don't win that game without willie glass(18 & 9 rebs, shutdown raphael addison in 2nd half) and marco baldi(hit 4 huge free throws down stretch, played seikally tough in paint) ... best part was rubbing it in the faces of the stunned cuse fans leaving MSG..LOL... good times!

That game got me in trouble with my ex-wife (who gives a sheet), when after the game she commented that I seemed more excited about the SJU victory than I did about her cousin having a baby that day and I responded "Right". :)
