Boy I hope I got the coach's surname spelled correctly!
Had a lunch with an SJU person at Acquistas near the old Sky Fox. It's a periodic tradition of ours - a win- win!
In walks the "Coach", gracious and pleasant as always. We chatted. I said Chris Mullin might bring the program back "not as great as your days though" to which Coach responded adamantly:
"He'll be better!"
Later the waiter came over to say the Coach paid our bill!
I also understand that Coach Mullin dines here - it's the new "Dantes"!!!

Thanks for the report Sherman, et al.

My wife likes to tell the story about when she was a student, Coach C would pay the bus fare for any of the students getting on the Q44 with him. (Yep he took the bus!)

Always a class act.

Sounds like he always did, in fact, have a pocketful of tokens.

Watch out. NCAA will tag us with a recruiting violation. :woohoo:

One other point from today. I
mentioned to Coach C that I went to West Point when Mike K was our point guard. We chatted. The Coach knew Mike was almost fired after his first few less than noteworthy years. Coach smiled when I suggested Chris could eventually bring us to the Duke level! I ask "Why not?" It's all in the recruiting and SJU could become one of those special destinations. We might not bring on Academic AAs but...
Of course we will lose out on some recruits and have our share of "Ls" especially in the early years...but if we recruit well anything can and will happen. My opinion and "gut" belief.
I know that will open up some strong responses to my remarks.
Let's remember, Chris Mullin & staff are proud people. They are winners. They signed on here for big purposes. Not to settle for what we had since the Coach.
Generals Sherman, Grant and I came aboard to win the War not to settle for the second tier behind the Confederacy, behind Villanova or anyone else... Now don't accuse me of consuming alcohol tonight with these poetic remarks. Winners are winners whether in sports or war. That's my analogy.
Enough from me.

I have a Lou story and a Jack Kaiser story. Back in the late 70's I working in Rochester, NY and the Johnnies were playing Niagara in Buffalo as part of a Doubleheader there, including Canisius and St Bona. . Lou was sitting in the stands during the first game and I went over and introduced myself. He was very gracious and gave me full attention for a few minutes. What a Guy!

Another time, I was in Syracuse watching the Orange vs G' TOWN. Jack Kaiser and Carmine Calzonetti were there on a Scouting trip. A friend and I were in a Orange hangout and in came Jack and Carmine. I again introduced myself as a Alum and we wound up having drinks and a late night Snack. when the Checks came, Jack picked up the tab!

Over the Years, we seemed to have lost some of that CLASS, and, I am certain Chris Mullin , with Lou in a Advisor role, will again return some of that luster to our Program.

We can afford patience under Chris, since most of us are confident in his leadership. It will be slow at first, until he gets a full complement of his Recruits in place. But, it will happen!

Not many kids, despite their young ages, won't know who Chris Mullin is, once he starts recruiting them. And, even not, their Coaches , Parents and fans will know his pedigree soon.

So did Jack Kaiser. I believe Jack never got a drivers license.

Having interacted with Coach many times over the years, after one occasion I learned how ingrained it is in him to be gracious and warm even when he doesn't feel like it.

About a dozen years ago I took my then very young grade school son and his friend to a Garden game. Coach was sitting fairly close by and the boys wanted to meet him or get an autograph but he was mobbed so we kept our distance.

I then ran into a friend as the game ended who happened to be an SJU ball boy many moons ago, and knows coach well. Coach was trying to make a quick exit, but my friend stopped him and asked if he would take a photo with the kids. He stopped, was warm and gracious and flashed that billion dollar smile, and the boys were thrilled.

My friend came back a few minutes later after walking Looie to the exit, and said "Looie's mad at me for stopping him like that." Looie gave him the Italian thumb pressed to his forefingers, and scolded him in a friendly way. But when he was with my kids, you'd never have known that he was in a hurry.

The guy's a treasure, and when his time comes, there will be a lot of grown men shedding legitimate tears. We like to chant , "We are St. John's" but Looie IS St. Johns.

Got a great looie story.... MSG... during halftime of the 86' Big East title game vs. Cuse... believe i was 14 at the time... my dad hands me a black&white photo of looie and joe lapchick sittin next to each other on the bench... tells me to take the pic, hands me a magic marker and tells me to go behind the SJU bench and ask lou to sign it... unfortunately, we were down 9 i think & he did not appear to be in a very good mood... so i scheme/weasel my way to coach and tap him on the shoulder.. i was PETRIFIED... looie turns around and as soon as he saw the pic a big smile came over his face... he said sure kid, grabbed the marker, signed it & patted me on the head... he then asked me where i got the photo & also said he thinks it will bring us luck in the 2nd half... at this point i was in shock, but managed to thank coach lou & took the pic back to my father... my father couldnt friggin believe i got him to sign it... and thats looie in a nut-shell..... just a great, GREAT human being!

Amazing win! Walter Berry blocked Pearl Washington layup attempt to take lead with 1.5 seconds to go, clock ran out as ball bounced along floor. What a shot by Rowan, I was about 15 feet away behind the basket he was shooting at.

It amazes me how many fans don't know that SJU won the '86 BE championship game. It was one of the greatest games in SJU lore. The Ron Rowan jumper with about 15 seconds left in the game and the Pearl Washington dash up court on the next inbound play only to be rejected by Walter "The Truth" Berry. What a game with SJU coming back from 19 down in the second half. I was privileged to be there. Then I remember it was almost 30 years ago and realize that many on this site have never experienced those glory years. However I think we're going in the right direction and many of us will get to know what that feeling was like again.

I'm sure we had more exciting games in our glorious history, but I'd be hard pressed to name one. Just an amazing finish to the BE tourney at a time when the Big East was arguably at its peak.
