Last night I tried to log on to Redmen.com, only to see a message announcing that the site was shut down in observance of the 10th anniversary of September 11th.
Our worlds literally stopped on September 11, 2001, and irrevocably changed as a result. Many of us were either deeply, directly affected by the savage attack on civilian Americans, or know someone who was. For the days that followed, sports didn't matter, late night talk shows suspended comedic monologues, and our churches were packed with people who never prayed so fervently.
Of course, our grief was soon bolstered a sense of pride in being American, united not just as states but by people with a resolve to defend the freedoms that were hard earned by our predecessors. We were and are determined that this should never happen again, and that if it does, our response should be strong and decisive. Sports did matter again, not in outcomes, by as an important step in resuming our American way of life in the midst of adversity.
Paul, by your simple act of observance, you helped me to recall all of that. Shutting down Redmen.com for just a day helped me to recall that ten years may have passed, but for many, it's been 3,650 days of too little laughter, and too much loss.
