Cinci brawl...

What a shameful display by both Cincinnati and Xavier last night. Just as embarrassing were the comments made by the Xavier player in the post game press conference. Cronin says he will discuss disciplinary actions with the AD and president.

When its all said and done, with the possible suspensions and dismissals, they may be worse off than we are right now.....

Cronin was great in the post-game interview but time will tell what if anything happens at Cinci.
I certainly have my doubts as to whether anyone will face serious repercussions for their actions.

Xavier's new orientation manual, Page 1:

"We have a new performing arts center, two Nobel laureates on staff and a whole bunch of gangstas in that locker room, not thugs. Welcome freshmen!"

Wouldn't be surprised if Gates was thrown off the team, nothing but a problem for Cronin last year. If Cronin had to make a decision last night I doubt if there would be any players left on his squad.

6 games not nearly enough IMO

Gates IMO should be gone from the team for that sucker-punch.

Gates will miss one Big East game against Pitt.

I don't think 6 games is nearly enough either. I think 10-15, maybe 20 games, would have been appropriate. I absolutely disagree though with the calls to throw any of the players off the team.

This is sports, these things unfortunately happen.

I have no sympathy for guys who go at it off the court with non-players, or with a coach, or god for bid an official, in any sport. But on the field, ice, turf, skirmishes happen.

We shouldn't look at this any different than if it happened on a college baseball field and a hitter stormed the mound and swung at a pitcher who was "head hunting". Do you know how many times a year that happens in NCAA baseball? Tempers flair, it happened on the court, suspensions are appropriate but let's not go over board.

It was way before my time, but basketball fans still talk about "The Punch" Kermit Washington hit Rudy Tomjanovich
with back in the '70s.

100% agree. How can you sucker punch a guy in the side of the head and then your teamate stomps him when hes down. Both shouldnt see another game this season.

At miami when brandon meriweather was stomping those FIU players, i believe that he was suspended for the rest of the season

Cronin still sounds pretty serious:

"Before any of them put a uniform back on they will apologize and that's just the first step before putting the uniform back on," Cronin told ESPN.com Sunday. "Just because the press release says what it says that doesn't mean they're all back. They're going to sit in front of a camera and say how sorry they are and how grateful they are for getting a second chance.

"If I don't believe it then they won't be on the team -- and if they don't demonstrate that they won't ever put on a jersey again -- period," Cronin said. "They're going to sit in front of a camera and say it. I can tell the difference as to how genuine they are. The university issued the suspensions and I supported it. But for me it's different. I have the autonomy to not let anybody back on the team."

How many chances does Gates get?

Tooooooooooo many Moose. I knew the punishment would not be too severe.

Once the BE season starts and this will have calmed down, Cronin will have Yates and the others back on the team. Maybe I'm cynical, but I think Cronin said all the right things in the presser and then dropped the ball on the length of the suspensions. What's the old Al Davis saying, "Just win baby"?

Worse was the Ron Behagen kneeing of Luke Witte of Ohio State, a game in which Dave Winfield of baseball fame played in as part of Behagen's Minnesota team.

Punch almost killed Rudy T. We don't need a repeat of that terrible event and it is why I think that sucker punch thrown with bad intentions and the kick in the head to a guy that was already knocked to the ground by a punch deserve more than a 6 game suspension . This is not the pros they are representing the University and IMO should never again don the school's uniform.

While I didn't see the game, I did see some of the highlights and lowlights and here is my take:

Players are responsible for their own actions however I think the officials and both coaches might have been able to step in sooner. The trash talking was going on evidently nonstop throughout the entire game as was other "questionable actions" (player who made a basket, was fouled and hugs a fan after his momentum took him into the crowd behind the basket). You have a Cincy player at the end of the first half, come off the bench and get in the face of an Xavier player and they had to be seperated. A Technical (or Technicals) were warranted (not sure if you can give one at half time, but if you could, it deserved it their). At the very least, at the beginning of the 2nd half, go to both coaches and advise them to tell the players to "knock it off". While as a coach you want your players to play with emotion, you still need to make sure they are in control.

Xavier isn't clean in all of this either. The fight began as one Cincy player got an Xavier player's face near the end of the game. It escalated when another Xavier player comes and pushes the Cincy player to the ground. Then the ball is thrown at the Xavier player and the fight breaks out. Besides Gates, their was an Xavier player who was throwing haymakers as the players were seperated and goes toward the Cincy bench and appears to either hit or just miss someone wearing suit as he tried to get at a Cincy player who was pulled away from the action. I would like to see if any Xavier players are punished.

And what was the Xavier coach thinking letting his players do the interviews in the press conference after such an emotionally charged game and fight? Was he pleased that the world heard his best player refer to himself and his teammates as Gangstas and Thugs or another player talk about where they are from how they handle this type of situation.

Lastly, there is an automatic NCAA suspension of one game I believe for fighting. Are these suspensions on top of this 1 game ban (they should be).

 That was horrible.
It's a disgrace all the way around. Gates should be gone. As Moose said how many chances does he get
6 games not enough
Cronin talked tough after the game lets see what happens in early January
He probably will not be as "tough" then

is he a schmuck or what?

"If Cincinnati tries to do what they did (Saturday) they're going to get a fight," Miller said after UA beat Clemson on Saturday. "So I'm proud of those guys." [...] "They have a chance to win it all," Miller said. "It's just such a great story. I'm really proud of those guys and I watch them any time that I can. No one's going to bully those guys."

One more comment, again from the Daily Star:

Miller said he was not surprised Saturday's Xavier-Cincinnati intra-city rivalry game featured a brawl that resulted in eight player suspensions. "Happens every game. I'm proud of those guys, I really am," Miller said of Xavier, his former team. "I would fully expect there to be a fight."

Why were the kids permitted to speak at the post game press conference? Emotions were still running so very high so soon after the game which no doubt contributed to some poor choice of words.

Miller is definitely a schmuck and more. His former team -Xavier"- instigated much of the trouble and he's proud of them for that-what an ASS! Not that the players from Cincy were any better and were in fact worse given that one player is a repeat sucker puncher and another stomped on a helpless downed player who had done nothing wrong. They should put the "gangstas" from both teams in a room without anyone to stop them from showing how tough they are-they can take turns getting kicked in the head by the rest of the gangstas from both sides-oh Miller can be the first and last to get kicked since he feels it's all good and he's SO PROUD of them.
