Has anyone heard how Jones is looking recently. I can't help but think this guy could be a bust out player. He certainly is athletic and has a pro body. Any opinions?

Sampson, Sanchez, Obekpa are well above him. He'll be fighting with GG for 4th place on depth chart. Unless he comes in ready to rebound and bust his arse, I don't see too many minutes for him come the conference schedule. As it is, both Poiner and Balamou rebound better than him and can defend more positions.

Balamou is a better rebounder than C Jones?

He oozes potential, but I also think, like Marillac, he'll be the 4th (or, possibly, 5th) option in the frontcourt.

I thought he passed the ball well, and had a good touch near the basket. But too many times, he seemed lost. Maybe, we'll gather more info about Jones while the team is abroad.

Jones is important, we may really need him in 14-15. This year he wont get much burn. But I would like to see him get some exp.

Considering positions, yes. Jones pulled down 29 rebounds in 229 minutes last year. Balamou pulled down an identical 29 boards, but in 256 minutes...

I'm not kidding, I'd love to hear how a wing is a better rebounder than Jones who has a big body. Not to mention they had the same amount of rebounds last year and Balamou played more minutes.

Well I guess the point was that the minutes were almost the same, and Balamou is much smaller to grab as many rebounds. Balamou also absolutely has springs and can soar. I would say though that Balamou often just crashes, where a big guy is schooled hard on positioning and boxing out. No doubt Jones has an awful lot of room for improvement to be a good rebounder, and most of the time he was pretty invisible on the court. He did show some flashes of being talented, though.

Did you watch any games last year? Jones looks like he is standing in quicksand. Balamou plays like he is 6'8...blocking shots, ripping down rebounds. He tore more than a few away from jokes last year. A 20 minute difference in minutes is neglible over anentire season. Jones played under the basket while Balamou played mostly on the perimeter. Throw Balamou at the four and he'd be well ahead in rebounds. Bottom line is that if the ball goes up between Balamou and Jones...Balamou is coming down with it.

I watched every game, honestly neither of them showed me much of anything. Lets hope they both rebound well this season.

I'll be pleased if Jones amounts to anything at all, but college basketball is littered with guys blessed with pro bodies who have had no impact whatsoever.

The bigger question is how could Jones only get the same amount of rebounds as Balamou in essentially the same amount of minutes. He's a big who didn't play like one last year. Hope that improves.

Nailed it.

As for Balamou, I saw enough to think his potential is off the charts. At worst, I see him having a Brownlee or Horne type of impact as a junior and senior. His motor is terrific and he fights for boards looks an animal. He got so big for some blocks I swore they were from Obekpa. People are so quick to crown Pointer as a potential Oladipo...what about this kid as a junior?

I absolutely agree with the comment about blocks, and a few times, I'd ask someone with me, "Did Obekpa block that?" It seemed impossible that someone Balamou's size got up that high. Then again, my introduction to SJU bball was cast with Ed Searcy, Cecil Rellford, and 6'2" Beaver Smith snuffing shots far above the rim. Felix though, is so raw that he has a long way to go to become an impact player as a junior or senior, but as you implied, all the tools are there.

Agree, Felix is more under control and has a better touch than Dom IMO.

Beast, believe you shrunk Beaver 2 inches he was 6'4! :) Beaver Smith and Searcy were 2 of the all time SJU leapers but Searcy was a stand still straight up leaper probably the beat of that kind.

Rumor had it that Searcy wore 6 pairs of socks when he played as a cushion for his feet when he leaped for a rebound or to block a shot

Yup remember that and it was probably true because when he came down it must have been like jumping off a building. Used to love watching him block shots of 7 footers and on some of his blocks he would just sky and catch the ball out of the air. Will never forget the March '73 game at the then Alumni Hall and his rebounding battle with the 6'9 Marvin Barnes. Epic. Great game that we lost 93-90. Ernie D had 41 a then record for Alumni Hall, Kevin Stacom had 25 and our own Billy Schaeffer had 30. Now that was basketball the likes we haven't seen since MULBERRY!
