Nice post, NC . Thanks.
I first met Chief Blackjack during my freshman orientation. It's nice to see his picture again.
Not saying they shouldn't have changed names, but why not change to something that allows us to keep our identity? Chiefs seems like a perfect compromise. I remember a lot of names being bandied around, don't remember what they were. Just remember the near universal dislike of Red Storm.
Might be time for Catholic schools to stop accepting Federal Funds anyway. Too much BS. The consistently highest rated Catholic school in the country in terms of finances, accepts no Federal funds, has a small endowment and has froze tuition the past 4 or 5 years and was just recently rated just ahead of Harvard in the top 10 best deals (quality/cost) in U.S. colleges. Is also one of the highest rated best liberal arts education with a Great Books style curriculum
I too was introduced to Chief Backjack during freshman orientation. Several years later when pledging for a frat ( LEX) we were tasked with finding him and kidnapping him. We never got close. But I still remember the pride and affection that everyone had for this mascot. I can still see the mascot dressed as a brave warrior wearing a feather war bonnet that reached to the floor. Those were the days. It hasn't been the same after a series of flawed mascots topped off by none other than Tuxedo Man. 
Guessing that its much easier for a small Catholic school like STA to operate on a tight budget, rely on it's endowment and still adhere to it's mission and principles, than a much larger school like SJU. Could see some of the smaller Catholic following suit, but expect it would be really difficult for the bigger ones to do so.
