Chemistry a Problem / N.Y. Post

"The players just didn’t look comfortable with one another and D’Angelo Harrison admitted after the game that the team is still getting used to each other. "

So after practicing and playing with each other all of last season the line is they are still getting used to each other????
One thing they seemed to have learned from their coach is B.S.

I have tried to refrain from entering into this discussion as I bleed for the program and always wish to give the team and staff the benefit of the doubt but I am not at all surprised with the outcome of the game. Bo Ryan is just a superior coach, hands down and no discussion.
I completely agree with 72 that to say they are not comfortable with one another is pure crap. The core of this team has been together for exactly 30 months , Dlo, Phil, Gift, Sir Dom and Jakaar , CJ, Felix and CO for 18 months, Orlando was there last season and Branch has been on campus for 22 months.
Sorry but there is no excuse for coming out flat. This group should want it more than we do. Something is wrong.

Nothing is wrong. It was more likely mere 'coachspeak,' per the players.

Are some of y'all gonna dissect every little thing after losses?

Not dissecting -----just quoting.
We have 7 players that were top 100 HS players, 2 JC All Americans and after 2 years what Harrison has confirmed is that they lack chemistry.
Stupid quote and bad PR.

More like the title of the article being misleading more than anything.

Harrison said something, and it was made out more than it was supposed to be.

Give it a rest and relax.

From my perspective it's more of a willingness to play tough defense than chemistry issues. If it is chemistry issues then those will work out.. What is scarier is how no one plays any defense.. Zone or Man! They looked lost. I exclusively watched Harrison a few times in the second half and he was getting schooled, bad enough, it didn't look like the effort was there.

Only reason I'm singling him out is because it's what I saw. Everyone had their moments though. Not sure that can be coached at this level? I think you have to want it as a ball player and a grown man.

We're as doomed as doomed can be.... for real though, what do people here expect coaches or players to say after a loss, especially first game of the season against a team that was supposed to win the game? They are saying what they should say. That they need to work better together and with more games that will happen. Can't wait for so many of you to eat your damn words. 1 game into the season against the number 20 team in the country.

If eating one's words is a consequence of having a wrong opinion you would have choked to death a long time ago! :)

Bingo. If anybody should have had "chemistry" problems it should have been Wisconsin which was bringing more players into their rotation. Didn't seem to bother them very much.

It's very clear that our team is very under coached... Talent is great, but with no real plan it's just turns into one on one basketball again! His match up zone Is really a mystery to me.... How many wide open looks can we give a team and expect to win? We are a team loaded with athletes....and i love them all but look at wisconsin, not great athletes but great basketball players... I'll take that anyday

Remember, though. We haven't added players to a successful system, so it isn't like new players are fitting into something. I wouldn't begin speaking about chemistry until we are at least 6-7 games into the season. With the flashes that Jordan and Sanchez showed yesterday, the potential breakout year for Sampson, and a new and improved Harrison, this team should find its footings quickly, with the rest of the squad finding their roles.

If I had to guess, by this time next month, we will be singing a different tune.

There are two things I would have liked to see against Wisconsin that had more to do with our long term development than the game itself.
1. Have one of our superior guards penetrate and kick to a shooter in the corner for a three, with repetitions that included faking the kickout, and dropping off to a big man.
2. Have a 3 point shooter in the corner (particularly Hooper) fake the shot and take the one quick dribble to reshape the floor and make the defense adjust.

Those two approaches in the minds of the folks we play make room for our athleticism to matter more over the long haul.
Not saying it won't happen but the sooner the better in terms of giving our offense better structure.

A little perspective. The starting line up for the first game of the season last year was: Greene, Pointer, Sampson, Jones, and Garrett. Only one of those players, Sampson, was in the starting line up first game this year. Of this year's starting line up, only he and Branch were even eligible at the end of last season. Looked at another way, how many players from last year's team are doing the same thing this year that they did last: Sampson, Harrison and Obekpa. Is it a coincidence that they're the only players who played particularly well? Jordan and Sanchez have never played a D1 game. Greene and Pointer have gone from starting to the bench. Starting PG Jamal Branch had 16 DNPs last year. Bottom line, I agree with my boon companion Beast of the East. Things will be different come January.

The bottom line is this- Lavin needs a guy like Dunlop. With Dunlop they took the ragged bunch from the Roberts era and got to the NCAA and may have gone further in the NCAA if not for the injury to a key player. When Lavin was out with his illness, Dunlop took a young and limited cast of players and had a relatively respectable season. If not for him I really believe they win only half the games they did. With Dunlop gone and Keady apparently left to the sidelines to watch games and have steak dinners with Lavin we have no defensive or offensive cohesiveness. There just aint no plan. Keady has to step up and help his old pal and Lavin needs to become more Keady like in his on court demeanor. If that happens then st johns will be riding the polls in the top 15 in the Country

Agree unless we have lost too many games figuring it out by then

remember 2010-2011. We looked pretty bad through January then went on a great run in February and had a great season. I'm not going to remain patient that long, but it's definitely to early for everyone getting on the team with these posts. I personally think Wisconsin is a bad matchup for us and it's only the first game of the season. With all the hype heading into the season maybe a loss was good for this team - they haven't done anything yet but amass a lot of talent.

As the number one fan that pronounced Lavin a dunce you did a good analysis of explaining away his perplexing rotations after having HIS players for two years. As you indicated he started Garrett, Greene, Pointer and Jones. What did he see in practices that warranted that lineup? Except for Jordan, all these top 100 recruits played and practiced all last year, over the summer and into the new season. Some here have written our players off as having low BB IQ. I do not buy it. These coaches are not teaching in practice where defense, spacing and game strategies are worked out. Trust me, if we lose at Barclays, to Syracuse and get upset one or two games this team is NIT bound because of a very soft schedule. The coaching staff needs to get it together more than the kids!

Trust me, if we win at Barclays, beat Syracuse, and pick up a couple of solid road wins in the conference, then we're looking at pretty, decent seed in the NCAA Tournament, regardless of our very soft schedule.

See how that works?
