Charles Minlend / University of San Francisco / SJU Connection

He's had a solid career for USF. Averaged 10 ppg as a freshman, 14 last year and 14 so far this year as a junior.
Yes he was a warrior but Donny Marshall used to eat him up
No, Donny didn’t eat him up. Minlend and Donny used to go at it, and with similar stats if I remember. Ray Allen used to eat us up, and those UConn’s teams were very good.

The thing I loved about Minlend was that he also had great range and was a shooting threat from everywhere on the court. I love players that can stop and hit shots regularly anywhere on the court. Brownlee was Minlend-lite with that. It’s something that guys like Roberts and Champagnie are going to need to learn to do to become more than they are now. The art of the short/mid range jumper is rare these days.

Minlend was a 4.0 student athlete. The Yukon teams were a bunch of cheating bastards that would do things in game that they were masters at getting away with like grabbing jerseys, groin shots, gut shots, elbows to the head/face, stepping on feet etc. Marshall was doing the Yukon thing and Minlend ended up getting kicked out of a game as I recall. Typical.

This is what happened between Marshall and Minlend. Both were suspended for one game.

Of course, after this, Mahoney told Minlend to never do this again, and his numbers for the rest of the year went down, as he became tentative inside. Calhoun, OTOH, told Marshall to be careful, but keep playing the same way you always do.

That's why UCONN is a winning program (or was for a very long time after this), and we are not.
Unfortunately, Paul, our guys did their share of non-classy stuff over the years; NOT Charles Mineland however.
Our share maybe but in no way similar to Yukon.

the video clip is incriminating against our guy but doesn't show all the stuff leading up to it. Even in the video before that started you can see Marshall's hand on Minlend's face.

There's a player (McLEOD) that Mahoney let go to Duke. Kid should have been given more playing time. I remember one game at Alumni Hall yelling to him on the foul line, "Looking good." He smiled and said thank you.

Senior was an undersized PF with the heart of a lion. Nice article from his playing days. Interesting what he was told by UCONN when they were recruiting him out of high school:

That's not quite accurate (the UConn part; he absolutely was a warrior). Not that it matters.
You’re saying this statement by Minlend isn’t quite accurate? Not sure why he would lie about this, but ok

Back then, a second ejection from a game was an automatic suspension for the rest of the season.

MCleod was behind Zendon and Minlend. He wanted a chance to play the 3 but never got the chance and even lost playing time towards the end of the season to Sergio (RIP) behind Minlend once it was reported he wasn't happy and was considering a transfer.

Duke, who rarely took transfers took him as Hurley at St. Anthony's vouched for him and he had solid grades. He was told he would be given a chance at the 3 but due to injuries and defections he rarely played it there either. However, in their offense, he was allowed to step outside and shoot (as he did have a good short. He parlayed that into becoming a first round (20th) pick.
