Was in Boston over the weekend watching college hoops a ton. In the middle of one of the games one of the broadcasters was asked about teams that have the best chance to get in from the outer bubble. He said "The boys in Queens...the St. John's Red Storm. They have a few games coming up where they can play their way in and solidify a spot with a few wins over Marquette/Pitt/ND and handling Prov/USF".

Cool to hear people think we are at least dangerous and have a legit shot at the tourney. Some UConn kid was at the guy's apartment I stayed at and he gave me crap about SJ without realizing we were actually pretty decent this year.

Not sure why a UConn fan would give you crap after we handled them a few weeks ago.

Oh trust me...my immediate response was "Dude...we just beat you." he didn't even realize. I guess just a front runner fan.

I would think a "few" wins, means at leans three of five - a tall order. It is amazing that based on where we started the Big East schedule, we still are in the discussion. However, based on how we are playing right now over the past five games, I'm not overly confident of our chances to win more than one or two, unless Branch comes back near full strength, and the team starts playing well again.

We have been bad lately, but this is the kind of team that seems to come out of nowhere and win a game they shouldn't. Who knows, maybe Cuse and L'Ville will have the weight on the bat effect for us and we go up against lesser teams and have a much better game with them. Playing great competition can prepare you well...you need battle scars to grow as a team. You can't just schedule cupcakes and have no reality check games (cough Creighton...sorry I had to).

I dont feel like loosing two games versus 2 solidified elite, and deep tourney teams at 2 of the toughest venues in cbb is being bad as of late. This tells me that we have work and recruiting to do, to get to that elite level but not that we are playing bad, we are playing at our level.
If we keep trying to convince ourselves that we have the #1 team in the country, and we shouldn't lose to anyone, then we are setting our selves up for disappointments, when a team that is clearly superior, beats us. We are not yet at that elite level, we are better than we have been in 10 years, and getting close to that elite level, where we all know we belong.

We will get 3 our of 5 beating either Pitt or ND.

we will get 3 our of 5 beating either Pitt or ND.

If you read my posts, I expected that we lose these two, no question. I don't necessarily look at outcomes in terms of playing well. We played badly in the win vs. DePaul, then poorly against GTown, Louisville, and Syracuse. I gavemy UCONN tix away and didn't see that game. However, in the three aforementioned losses, we could have played well and lost those games anyway, but we didn't. Our ball movement has not been good, our shooting has been bad, and our defense bad as well. They will need to step it up AND get Branch back in order to reverse their firtunes as of late. If the same team that played the last 5 games shows up, we probably lose 4 of 5.

We could win all five. USF and Prov, winnable. We beat ND, whether at home or not, ND can't handle athletic teams. Marquette just is a different team on the road, and Pitt looked very unimpressive at home tonight against ND. So stop with the o let's grab three out of five, just cheer for the johnnies and hope they win all five

I wouldn't get greedy...this is not a team consistent enough to win 5 tough games. When we won during our 5 game stretch or however long it was earlier in the season, it was because we were both at home and playing low end teams. We now have to go away and play the big boys except for a few games. I just don't see us beating ND again...they are so overdue to beat us regardless of where they play us and Cooley will not be benched this time. I wish this team was more like Nova...they just feel way more dangerous and able to rattle off 3 or 4 wins against the teams we will be playing. They can blow teams out like we can't and they know how to shoot 3's. It's not our defense that worries me, it's our offense. We seem to have players who can lay it up or make close tear drops, but none who can bomb away from 3 and make a good percentage. We need pure shooters and a true big post presence in the worst way. Give us a Blair type banger down low and a Ariciando type shooter from 3 with Branch back healthy, and this is a ranked team.

I'm not sure we can win all five, either, but I understand what Jack is saying. He's saying let's stop talking about winning a 3 of 5 or 4 of 5, and let's just win 'em all. I concur. Once again, not sure it'll happen, but concur, nonetheless.

The only away game we have against the "big boys" would be at Notre Dame. Providence is currently playing well, but I hope you're not considering them to be one of the "big boys."

'Nova has blown out DePaul and South Florida.... Whoop-de-freakin'-doo! Well, 'Nova has a couple of guys who can bang down low, in Pinkston, Yarou, and Ochefu, as well, as have a guy like Arcidiacono.... Oh! They actually have Arcidiacono. A team that you oh, so wanna envy isn't even something that you spew about so often on this board.... Yep! They aren't even ranked.

I just posted elsewhere that balancing reality with optimism, we're an NIT not an NCAA team - and that's fine - the kids will get experinece ala Sealy and Williams circa 1990s.

Of course if Branch were playing things cuold change.
DOES anyone know if and when Branch will return?

thanks and all the best

And all I am saying is that we can win out. If we do we are what 20-10, that's not NIT. People need to stop predetermining outcomes of the season before its even over

It's just not realistic. It's like buying a lotto ticket and saying "Well we COULD win the million dollars". Yes, it's true...you could. BUT it's much more likely that won't happen. We have 5 games left and we just got blown out 2 games in a row. We have no true PG and Harrison has been ice cold. We cannot shoot 3's. Marco looked great then cooled off. I think realistically we win 1-2 more games. With some luck we win 3-4 games. If everything goes right we win all 5.

Harrison kept us in the Louisville game before going into chuck mode when the game was out of reach. He may be out of his slump.

He tends to shoot/perform well at Carnesseca so hopefully we get that breakout game against USF.

Marco just needs more shots. Hit or miss, he should be taking at least 10-12 shots per game IMO.

Harrison has taken a major step back in terms of 3 pt shooting. He is shooting a full difference of .050 from 3 this year compared to last year. It's the same difference between a 35% 3 pt shooter and a 40% 3 pt shooter...big difference (.362 down to .312). I already knew just by the eye ball check, and just saw the stats matched my perception. This is very troubling because he should be getting BETTER at shooting, not much worse. Pretty sad when your biggest threat from 3 is a 31% 3 pt shooter (we don't know Marco's baseline yet due to less playing time).

USF: beat G'Town, played with L'Ville deep into the game and at 1-12 are way overdue to steal a win.
Providence: CRUSHED ND by nearly 20, beat Cincy
ND: will be at home where they play totally different and are way over due to beat us
Marquette: best team we will face at home since G'Town when we got killed
Pitt: same as above

Good thing is every time Joe3 is about to jump off the ledge, the team wins and he steps back in. See Nova, Rutgers I and G'town. Makes me optimistic.

The difference in his shooting % could be his extremely poor shot selection this year. I mean last year, he put up some bad ones. But not at this rate.

He shot a contested 3 off the opening jump ball at Georgetown for goodness sakes.

His shot selection is supposed to improve from frosh to Soph but it has digressed.not to mention he has been dealing with a bad thumb i believe.

Let's hope he stops with the hero ball and learns to value each possession.

Imagine if he just shot the ball at the collegiate 3 point line instead of the NBA line. I'm sure he'd have a higher average.
