I might put Barnes at #1. He has probably had more intriguing talent than Williams on several occasions, and did nothing with it.

List is a joke. Phenomenal coaches on the list. Lavin is always maligned. Il take his type of "overrated" any day. When he starts advancing in the tourney every year at SJU, people will whistle a different tune.

Idiots or jealous idiots wrote/voted on this list...

Let me ask this question: How is Lavin over-rated? Two seasons ago he took a bunch of left-overs from a prior coach and produce some stunning in-season victories, lost his most dynamic player at the end the season and went to the ncaa tournament.

Last year he had cancer and didn't coach...

And all he's had to do is recruit like crazy the last 18 months... and he's produced on that front. so what's over-rated about that?

So the only thing left to critique would his body of work at UCLA which was a millennium ago... not really valid in my opinion, as it was a long time ago and he may have grown as a coach since then - and oh by the way, he had pretty darn good results there too...

I'd rather have a top 5 overrated coach at STJ then a no-rated coach any day of the week, and twice on Sunday.

I am not a bit Boeheim fan but I am at a loss to understand someone with his records can be said to be overrated.

Crazy that a coach with 2 titles and 7 or 8 final fours is the most overrated in all the sport. My list would be Tom Crean, Rick Barnes, John Thompson III, John Beilein, Bob Huggins

I wouldn't put Crean on any overrated list.

So he's underrated? Appropriately rated? Not really elaborating much there.. To me he's overrated cause he took over a depleted team, but if he was such a great high profile hire for IU it shouldn't have taken 4 years to get to the NCAA's.

Amen to that!
In Lavin we trust!
I will be there with my season ticket enjoying 2012-2013 with Steverino on the sideline
I hope he moves up the list as we keep winning!!!

I wouldn't put Crean on any overrated list.

They were decimated not depleted. He has arguably the top recruiting class in the country this year. This year will tell a lot.

Huge Crean fan. I even mentioned his name when we were looking. I think they do big things this year.

Yes he is a super coach. I was hoping for him as well. 27-9 last year is unreal with what he dealt with

I understand expectations are high this year but for me it's taken too long. For different reasons we were pretty decimated after losing all the seniors and Lav was able to reload. If this years team makes the NCAA's then we will have made it 2 more times in a 3 year span than Crean had.

Remember 2 years ago IU was 2-6 in conference play and they beat #21 Illinois at home. The score was something like 45-44 and people were going nuts there and he was going crazier than anyone.

What's overrated is the meaningfulness of stupid polls like this.

What's underrated is the impact Steve Lavin has had on our program in 2-plus years he's been here, and the strictly positive impact he will continue have on it in years to come.

And this gets thrown around far too often. I don't do it that much so I don't feel bad saying I always thought he was shady (recruiting).

Crean?
Nah. Otherwise they would have been better a lot sooner :)
At Marquette he just got solid guys. Nothing over the top.

Fair point but everybody has 1 or 2 guys they just have bad feelings about. For whatever reason he rubs me the wrong way

Lavin on a list with names like Wright, Boeheim, Williams? Hysterical - everyone who hates 'cuse can't wait till Boeheim retires so the program will take a big tumble. Look what happened when the overrated Carnesecca retired -suddenly we yearned for the days when we were a perennial top twenty team that went out in the 1st or second round of the dance. Jay Wright was wanted by Kentucky, who would have taken him over Calipari. Great job by Lavin making this list - it's alist that says the coaches have had a lot of success, but they get too much credit.

Fwiw, I think Lavin is one of the most maligned coaches out there considering what is a very respectable record. Being "overrated" would actually require that people were singing his praises, and most casual fans of other programs think Lavin is awful and ran UCLA into the ground. Personally, I'm very happy to have Lavin if this is "overrated". We will soon be sitting in the top 25 yearly once again thanks to our overrated coach. Now let's see which "overrated" top 50 recruits he lands to our program in 2013... ;)
