Caught in the web of freshmen hysteria.

Wow! Predicting the Johnnies to win the Big East Tournament. People are beginning to take notice!!

I think he's nuts honestly. I love our potential, and I might agree with being a sleeper to win it next year, but definitely not this year. Can't imagine us making a miracle run. We can consistently beat some bad teams, but not the big boys yet.

You have a negative outlook on this team so it is really no surprise you think that. If they can pull together they have a shot. And they are knocking on the door so let's knock off a few more ranked teams and build up some steam going into the Big East Tourney.

Not negative...guarded and realistic. I've always been more of a straight shooter. You don't think I don't fantasize about this team being a top 15 squad and routinely being relevant again? Of course I do. But at this stage in the game I just don't think we have enough fire power. We need 1 more guy who can shoot as well as Bourgault, yet has the athleticism of Jakarr (I think that was Lawrence but we missed him). We also need a solid inside scorer. We need our Tyson Chandler to keep defenses honest. Too many times we have guys like Jakarr (love Jakarr) settling for 15 footers instead of driving to the hoop using the glass or dunking it. Jakarr can make that shot some games, and go cold others. That's the problem with not having a post player...it makes you rely on streaky 10-15 foot shots instead of almost guaranteeing 2 points by laying it up or dunking (also better chance for and 1's and fouls).

Winning the Big East tourney requires consistency and that's something we haven't really demonstrated yet except for teams like DePaul and Seton Hall. If we can knock off Cuse or L'Ville I will be a believer. Sure nothing is impossible, but if you really think we have a real shot of winning the Big East tourney I would say you are a major optimist.

I think all we need to do is move more. D'lo and Marco running the baseline at the same time would be something I would like to see. This group has slashers that can make it to the rim on from the wings and the baseline. This team needs a kick in their ass, but if they can get to the rim I think Obekpa, Sampson, Amir, and Dom can get some easy second chance points. This teams whole problem is not playing their game, we need to create turnovers, that's where these guys are at their best. If Marco and D'lo are on the floor at the same time I think we will get better open looks for both of them, but I think we are really close and if this team can turn the corner they are gonna take off but we have two players that will fit that roll in Hopper, and Gift. And I think Gift will be better at the 4 anyway.

I have thought this team has the ability to win the Big East Tourney since the start of the season. The question is can they come together and play their best basketball the last five games of the season before the Tourney. Game by game and who knows. We look good when we are playing at our best.

Scott, agree with most of what you said but I dont see Gift being able to play the four alongside obekpa. Imagine the clock we would run with that group.

If one of them were to ever become a capable offensive option, even an aaron spears type of offensive game, than we would be sooo a better team.

Obekpa and Gift split 40 minutes at the center position.
Jakarr should be a 35 mpg man at the PF.

Agreed, Scott mentioned Gift at the 4. Dont think that is very likely.

That was THE plan on October 15th with the exception of Karr. He is a small forward and always will be. The PF was supposed to be Sanchez. With that lineup, the Big East title was more likely than with the current lineup of 3 guards and 2 small forwards starting against more traditional lineups.

Sampson is a beast. He is more than fine at the PF, the problem is he doesn't have another legit big man next to him. I've come away very impressed with Sampson's rebounding. He is far and away our best rebounder and it's not even close. Put 15 pounds on him this offseason and let him develop 2-3 low-post moves, and he could be a top 10 PF in the country. Obekpa needs to hit he glass with the same ferocity as Sampson.

While I will be the first to say statistics can be misleading in 3 less minutes a game in conference play Obekpa averages .2 more rebounds a game than Sampson. Suffice it to say neither are a beast on the boards. Pointer averages virtually the same amount of rebounds as Sampson while playing the same 3 less minutes a game in conference play. So I hardly think Sampson has separated himself as far and away our best rebounder. We rebound by committeee and don't do a ggreat job at that most of the time.

Scott is not the only one who mentions Gift at the 4 for next year. A guy named Steve Lavin also has mentioned it as a possibility! In his debut year Gift hit his share of 10-15 footers and was an adequate rebounder. He is a physical specimen and just to see him standing next to Karr is impressive. Gift may surprise many people next year since the guy is an incredibly hard worker and a very intelligent kid who soaks up what the coaches teach him. Yes, I am a Gift fan.

The conference season to date is too small of a sample size. Dom's two moster games have skewed his #'s. Sampson is a ferocious rebounder for his size. He's 6'8 (in shoes) and very skinny, but he has great hands and he battles. CO is much thicker and longer, but he doesn't have the same commitment as JS. Both could obviously improve, but if the ball goes up betwee those two, JS is coming down with it.

Wow! Predicting the Johnnies to win the Big East Tournament. People are beginning to take notice!!

Calling us a sleeper to win it is not the same as predicting that we will win it. I take it to mean he thinks we have an outside chance.

Perhaps what he meant to say when he called us a sleeper to win it is that you must be dreaming if you see us winning the BET. :)

If he gave us 10 and 6 a game, which was greatly similar to his stats last season, as well as his stellar defensive play as well as he on court leadership we would have an improved record.

I'm actually glad he was redshirted, because he could be the guy who puts us over the edge next year as an interior threat with a big bulky body. He is like 7 Jakarr Sampson's in terms of muscle mass. He will get the chance to play as a senior with Harrison as a well-seasoned junior as well as Garrett, Greene, Pointer, Branch, etc. and Obekpa and Sampson will no doubt improve as sophs. Essentially it puts all of our eggs into 1 basket making next year the time to really make noise like 2011. Hooper, Bourgault, Sampson, Harrison, Branch, Gift, Greene, Obekpa, Pointer, Garrett, Balamou, Jones...that is a very, very deep team. I still feel like we are 1 good offensive post player/rebounder away from really competing for a consistent top 25 slot but with improvement from each player on that list and good shooting from Bourgault, Hooper, and Sampson, we will scare people.

So am I and it pains me greatly to have our only senior who is a great physical specimen, super intelligent and hard working sitting on the bench.

I was not glad but when all three of your top targets over 6'7 are going to commit to other schools Lavin hedges a bit and it may benefit SJ....next year. But it royally screwed us this year as we get pounded inside this year harder than a hooker on her 12th hour shift on 10th Avenue.
Your list is missing a guard that may sign in the Spring that can shoot.

Is that Severe? If so, I like it if he comes here. According to Rivals his shooting is "Outstanding" which I think is the highest possible descriptor for categories. That would give us Severe, Hooper, Bourgault, Harrison as 3 pt bombers, Sampson, Branch, Garrett, Greene as mid range/penetrate players, and Obekpa, Jones, and Gift as put back/dunk/post players. Rebounding, Obekpa, Gift, Sampson, Pointer. IMO a pretty damn balanced and deep team. If we can get Hooper to be our Aricianado or whatever his name is from Nova, with progress from all the others, I have 2 words: watch out.

Arci from Nova has an excellent handle and is a point guard. Max is 6'7 and is strictly a spot up shooter.

Arcidiacono isn't just a spot-up shooter, as Hooper is mainly known for being. Arcidiacono can play some point (which, I doubt Hooper can do), although he's more of a combo-guard. They are different players, as mentioned by Amase.

Thanks MJ, Arcidiacono is a play making guard, who can shoot, dribble, and pass. Hooper is a stand still shooter from the forward position. Not that I dont think he can help us.

Tell me if I am wrong... but are people starting to look forward to the "potential" of next year? I remember not so long ago people were "tired" of waiting until "next year" always. Funny how things change. This is Lav's second year on the bench, first year with his players. What is the norm for expecting results? 3 /4 years of recruiting? think by 14-15 if the same struggles are evident (lack of positioning on rebounds, lack of half court offense... etc) then there is reason for concern.

Sidenote- the team that will take the floor tonight shouldn't be written off yet. A bunch of talented kids who i think can win against anyone on any given night- this bunch has some fight. Do i think that we could take 5 of 10 from a Lville or 'Cuse? No. 1 of 10, yes, and that is all it takes.

Absent Sanchez they are missing a key piece, a strong, good hands, go up through defenders or pass back out to three ballers, low post player that forces defenses to collapse toward the key.

So am I and it pains me greatly to have our only senior who is a great physical specimen, super intelligent and hard working sitting on the bench.

Hooper and Arcidaicono couldnt be more different as players.

How so? Hooper and Arcidaicono both seem like pure shooters, not athletic, but get passes swung out to them and make their shots.

You can't be serious. You know nothing about basketball if you think those two kids are anything alike. Max is a stiff, slow shooter. Arcidiacano is an all-around basketball player. The only real similarity is the color of their skin.

Lavin doesn't have a junior or senior that he recruited out of HS on the roster, and he lost his best frosh to the first round of the NBA draft. We are STILL projected to be in the NCAA tournament at this point. We should return every single minute played next year, and anytime a team can do that, they can improve exponentially. We also have a 5th year senior with some weight and a 6'7 sharpshooter ready to give us more depth and skill.

Redmannorth and other moderators:

1. can this site somehow preclude all the prior posts when someone replies?
For instances, on this topic so many posts also include a page long of prior posts - when most of the time the new poster really only wants to add a comment and not attach the laundry list of previous discussion.

Am I making myself clear here?

I think there is both a "reply" and a "quote" button on the bottom right, BUT I think most people simply hit the quote button or somehow fail to eliminate the previous unnecessary "stuff". I think (hope) on my post here I clicked on the "reply" and not "quote".

2. all the best and let's beat that team tonight.
in fact in honor of the recent passing of the Trogg singer, let's make tonight a "Wild thing"
"You make my heart sing"
"You make everything"
so enjoyable this SJU season.

Yes I know, another generational "thing". A wild thing.

Enough.
