Casual Hoya picks SJU 6th

A lot of unfounded optimism on this board.

This is still a team that played some of the ugliest basketball I have ever seen (and yes, I've been around this program for the last 20 years).

We add four players to the rotation - a freshman guard in Jordan who though talented may or may not be a PG - a jack-of-all-trades, master of none in Sanchez - Gift who is the equivalent of Ty Grant when Ty Grant was a sophomore - and Hooper who needs to play in a halfway competent offense to do what he does best.

Despite the addition of Whitesell (sic), we will get pasted early by Wisconsin and Syracuse and probably have a morale-draining loss to a mid-major by Christmas. Then we'll pick it up and play decent in the Big East. There's a chance we turn the corner then a la 2011, but I don't see it.

love the optimism! Jordan is absolutely a point guard. Can he play alongside another pg? yes, be he is a point guard. And I do agree with you that our basketball was extremely ugly last year, everyone should, but there are major reasons to be excited about this season. All four new guys help out in major weaknesses the team had last year, especially offensively, were everyone besides gift is a capable 3 point threat.

The problem last year wasn't the lack of dribble drives or even outside shooting.

We had no low post offense at all. No player who could even attempt to score with his back to the basket on the blocks. We still don't have one. Pretty easy to defend a team like that.

That's a lack of personnel. I'm not going to even go into coaching and game preparation, although I am hoping Whitesell is the answer.

Lack of dribble drives and shootin were absolutely a major problem. Sanchez and gift will help with our post game. The 2011 team didn't have a post game.

Not exactly sure where youre getting this notion that there is some question about whether Jordan is a PG. He is well known to be a true pg, not some combo guy looking to make a transition. I really dont know the basis for this claim at all.

Sanchez doesnt need to be a master of any area, he is going to be the 3rd or 4th scorer while being a good passer, rebounder & contribute significantly to the overall fluidity and versitility of the offense.

You, as well as CasualHoya seem to be greatly underestimating the influence of coach Whitesell. He will have a profund impact on this offense that will be clearly evident from the 1st game.

No way this team gets "pasted" by Wisconson. Only 3 outcomes in that game. SJU wins in a close one, Wisc wins in a close one, SJU wins in a blowout. i would be somewhat surprised if the Johnnies dont beat the Bagers as i think we are the much better team this season.
Cuse should be a close game and tougher to predict

Actually, we didn't have any reason to be excited before the start of 2010-2011 season, either, as the that cast never really showed they would have any success at St. John's.

IMO, the current crop has shown they can be on the cusp of doing good things. They were an NCAA Tournament bubble team before Harrison was suspended. Whether, they would've made it or not are totally separate. But they were definitely in the conversation.

I'm one who believes the addition of Jordan, Sanchez, Whitesell, a healthy Branch, and the reinstatement of Harrison should pay off dearly for us.

Jordan can play point guard from what I've witnessed. I think it will translate over to the collegiate level. He's also not expected to be a savior of sorts, so he can slide in and play without worrying about having a ton of weight on his shoulders.

Sanchez is a 'do-it-all' player, and he really doesn't have to be a master of any of his trades for his overall game to pay off for us. Sanchez is also cerebral, and will bring size, experience, and, most importantly, skill.

Whitesell should play an integral part for us on gamedays. I feel we'll see Whitesell pay off as the season wears on. Several St. Louis fans mentioned how he did a good job preparing the Billikens.

Branch will finally have a full year playing with the team, and hopefully, he'll be injury free. He played fairly well last season when he was healthy.

Harrison still has an offensive arsenal that has to be respected. He shouldn't have to worry about forcing shots this season, as he'll have other guys around him who'll be able to hold their own weight.

All in all, I'm looking forward to a good, injury free season and a top 3 finish in the "new" Big East.

You're right, in reference to the 2011 team not having a post game. We all saw how they fared.

I, too believe Sanchez and Gift will help out with the post game. IMO, this current team has a higher ceiling than the 2010-2011 team.

+1
We took too many jumpshots last year because we couldn't turn the corner or drive to the hoop, adding Jordan helps a lot in that area. A point guard who can get in the lane like he can (and Branch when healthy) are the quickest fixes for any struggling offense. I don't know why Mainman would say that wasn't a problem, it clearly was. And how many teams really rely on back to the basket bigmen in this day and age? Guys don't stay in school long enough to learn post moves unless they are undersized, ala Dajuan Blair or Sullinger. Actually, most coaches are moving their bigs away from the block, so they can open up driving lines.

This team should be significantly better, it's just a question of how much.

I think the increase in depth and talent will really show up in full court defense that will translate to more easy baskets. I think Jordan, Sampson and Pointer will excel here.

Shooting was a major problem because there was no inside threat. Pretty easy to d-up D-lo or even Jakarr who can be money from 15' when there is no one to dump the ball down to.

As for 2011, methinks BE 6th man of the year Justin Burell would disagree. As would JB2 whose rear end was often in some mofo's chest as he was backing him down.

As for dribble drives... shrug. Seen too much of that ineffective one-on-one offense the past few years to get all excited about another player with a crossover.

I hope y'all are right about Jordan because PGs are born, not trained.

Please see the Marquette game tape. Or Syracuse. Or the Hoyas. And you will see (mostly) unheralded big men on the block killing us. I'd like to have one of them, just one please.

If you're going to critique the team, at least be accurate.
I remember the games pretty well, and getting beaten up on the boards isn't the same thing as getting beat by bigmen with lowpost games. We lost those games because guys like CJ Fair, Carter-Williams, Vander Blue, Starks and Otto Porter hit their shots and got to the foul line against us. In the second Georgetown game Lubbick played well, and I'll concede "ate us up", at times, down low. But we also lacked size on defense last season.
What I said about the college game not requiring big men who can score with their backs to the basket is 100% true.
Do we need guys who can defend and rebound? Yes.
Do we need guys with jumphooks and spin moves from the lowblock? Absolutely not.

Brownlee's best attribute was his ability to hit the midrange jumper. That's pretty common knowledge among St Johns fans. When exactly do you remember him posting people up

You want one of the game tapes? I'd be glad to provide it to you.
That Syracuse game featured Triche, Fair, Southerland, and Carter-Williams collectively hitting 50% of their 3s. I'm thinking that might have had something to do with why we lost, and probably less so the 8pts from Keita and 2 from Christmas.

Same is true of the 1st georgetown game with starks and porter blowing us up from outside and getting to the line a ton.

Facts are a hell of a thing...

8-10 16 pts, 10 rbs.
This day, the second of February in the year of our lord 2013 vs. the Red Storm on St. John's.

You right about the Cuse though so I'll instead go with the immortal Mouphtaou Yarou.

Maybe 4 of his points were off back to the basket moves. Put packs and jumpers.

You win. You're right. I don't know how we'll every be competitive unless we land a bigman with a full assortment of lowpost moves.
Every team in the top 25 has a Ewing or Olajuwon on their roster - we're screwed! Every season I see centers making up the majority of the leading scorers and we never have anyone up there!

Good thing you turned me toward the light, otherwise I may have continued to believe that our biggest need was a player who could get into the lane and create open shots for teammates. You should probably explain this to the coaching staff as well.

You shouldn't take this so personal. It's basketball. It's the Internet. It's supposed to be fun, a diversion from the drudgery that life often becomes.

Let us walk down this path together.... and ensure we have the spacing necessary to execute a competent half court offense that has eluded us 2+ years.

Amen.

Not to mention his fat ass wrecking Branch for the season.

Anyone who has ever rooted for Billy Singleton has no businesses criticizing another player's posterior.

Of the negative and poorly researched commentary I have to say that this one is actually pretty well thought out and objectively speaking, if I was a G'Town fan watching the way we stunk it up against them, I wouldn't have have great thoughts either. Certainly last season left major question marks for this season. As a skeptic you'd assume they were not answered. Those of us paying closer attention, know that they have been and then some.

That said, Jan 4 they will get a beat down at home and then again at MSG.

IMO, it's a very fair summary and opinion. I disagree with it, but anybody who watched St. John's close out last season can understandably doubt this team.

The big questions going into this season are (1) will Orlando Sanchez be a forced on the inside (2) can Rysheed Jordan be the next great SJU point guard (3) is Max Hooper going to impact the game plan?

Fwiw, Sanchez isn't a "master of none" type of player. He's better than he's getting credit for. He can score inside and outside and yes, one of his favorite shots IS a jump hook which he's quite good at. We lacked another guy that could be an option in the frontcourt, and now we have him in Sanhez.

We had two injured PG's last year, now we have 3 healthy ones including a stud in Jordan. Dribble penetration was a huge problem. I don't know where main man is getting this from. It is a huge reason the offense stalls. When Branch was healthy and eligible, we played our best on offense. Jordan is an another level than anybody on the roster when talking about dribble penetration. It should allow more opportunities for Harrison and hooper to shoot as well as assists to jakarr and Sanchez up front.

Anybody who isn't encouraged by this team is crazy. We didn't come near playing our ugliest basketbsll even last season. I sat through a lot of terrible Norm and Jarvis year's. Last year we were extremely young which often equates to ugly ball. We also were missing a few things.

I love the Hoys clown putting us 6th. He's deluding himself because of his disdain for SJU. They will get s different SJU team this year. Their defense is what got us last year. We'll be much more experienced and prepared this time around.
