Carnesseca Arena

It's just a horribly configured and woefully outdated place that holds the program back....

I have had 2 cars stolen on campus during my college years at SJU (1996-2001). I also had lo-jack on the first car stolen, to date both vehicles are still missing!

Aside from the concession issues, the heat, seating, etc. the main issue for me is that CA doesn't have a real student feel to it. To me putting 100 or so students up top behind the baskets won't cut it. The students need to be on top of the court down low to have any sort of impact. Now I have nothing against our older alumni but sitting in premium seats giving golf claps isn't doing it for me. I understand at the end of the day it comes down to money and those seats are big bucks, but I really feel that if a bunch a raving students were in those seats the place would have a better home court feel to it.

Problem is we can barely get more than 100 students who give a rats ass.

Considering how infrequently the student sections have been filled, unless you know 3,000 students who would show up at every game, there's no validity to your post. If there were 3,000 students filling the upper rafters, you could say move them down closer to the action. But the reality is that even the 20 kids they used in the SJU commercial pretending they are fans don't even go to all the games.

The problem isn't the amount of students, it's the rules the school has in place. If you buy season tickets as a student, it's $99 and you get seats behind the basket at CA and MSG. If you buy single game tickets as a student, they are $10 and you aren't allowed to sit behind the basket. So students are the ones filling out a lot of the upper bowls at all games. If you buy a single game ticket as a student and try to sit in the student section, the event staff doesn't let you in. So while the student sections are empty and pathetic, many students are sitting upper deck because the school has stupid rules.

I would rather see the school, apply a fee to student activities at tuition time. then let the students come in and I think you would cultivate a culture of going to the games, because there is little else to do and it would not cost the kids anything.

With the current $55,000 tuition bill for dorming students, I don't even think anybody would notice a $100 fee for the tickets. I like the idea.

Unfortunately they tried that and it didnt work...From'74 on I had great seats at Alumni Hall (Section 3 Row BB right at 1/2 court)...dont recall the year, but sometime down the road they moved me to a less attractive spot ostensibly to create a student section -- which was never occupied by students..ticked me off...

I had some great conversations back in the day with Bill Packer, Dick Enberg, Tommy Heinsohn and was told to STFU by JT

Really, Tom? I saw it just a few weeks ago. When did they yank it?

Many schools do exactly that!

At least a week ago.

Back in '97, we in the SJU athletics dept. called most of the big conference schools to do a survey to see if they included a fee in the total tuition cost. Most did and if I recall correctly the yearly fee was around $350 dollars. So every student is actually paying for their "free" ticket to the game.

The info. was given to Fr. Harrington and I believe the board of trustees and they decided that they would rather offer discounted ticket prices to students instead of charging every student a yearly fee. Now this was a long time ago.

I'm not sure how many students go to the games now-a-days, but at many of the other schools the students aren't season ticket holders because there is a lottery for limited seats to each game.

When a student is reminded he has payed for his ticket and just needs to reserve his seat there is no way you would get fewer students at games. Besides, I am the kind of dick that thinks you either show school spirit or you pay for opting out.

Why not just take pride in the dump and love it as the home it is??

Mets...late 90s, playoffs...Todd Pratt made a speech to the team after a loss on the road about being inspired by the worst stadium in the majors (Shea) that was hilarious and inspiring. :)

Hugh Douglass, when asked about the "ghetto" that was Veteran's Stadium while with the Eagles, "it may be a ghetto, but it's OUR ghetto."

So much of my old new york has been murdered for more chain stores and glass buildings...

appreciate what you have. :)

Bad enough the Garden has lost some of its soul with this last renovation job...besides, knowing this board, you'd all call a new souped-up arena a "likely tribute to our coach, all style, no substance." :)

Student tickets are marked as such. Simply require that an SJU student ID also be presented with each student ticket scanned. Otherwise, the ticket alone is invalid.

Maybe it's a good time to revisit the idea. I know when I was a student, a $10.00 in my pocket was not something I experienced very often.

At some schools a student ID is your ticket to home games, because everything is programmed into your student ID card. So if you buy a season ticket it's simply programmed in. At those schools all students seating is GA, with no set seats.

That could be done at CA, but difficulty at MSG.

On the subject of CA though, we need a better team much more than we need a better arena.
