Carnesecca Arena

I'm surprised that the schedule ended CA games in Mid January this year. I don't think Senior Day at MSG has the intimacy of CA and exclusively hometown crowd showing appreciation.

PLEASE NO COMMENTS ABOUT HOW YOU THINK ITS A DUMP. THAT'S BEEN COVERED AD INFINITUM AND ITS NOT GOING TO CHANGE.

I went to last week's game vs. Seton Hall with a friend of mine, who isn't a SJU Alum. He had gone to the Villanova game on his own. I was surprised that he overwhelmingly though that by comparison CA was a much better place to watch a game, and that the crowd was into it, closer to the court, and more of a factor. With so many poster's here calling CA a dump, it was nice to hear someone impartial think it was a great place to watch a game.

Yea, it gets hot, and yes 80% of the seating is bleachers, but there is no question that if we played all of our home games at CA instead of most of the Big East season at MSG, we'd fare so much better. As a fan, it shouldn't bother us that it doesn't seat 15,000 because if we could pack the place with 5500 or whatever capacity is, the place would be rocking. With 7000 in the Garden you can yell across the court to a friend and he will hear you.

Still and all, it's kind of like an end of the season when we finish our games there.

My guess is that MSG wanted us as much as possible in February, because of the NHL being on Olympic break.

As for where I prefer, for me personally, I don't drive, so I obiviously prefer MSG.

DePaul was supposed to be on campus. Lavin wanted it and Sr. Night at Garden instead

i think MSG took STEVE'S February prediction as gospel and wanted ALL our remaining HOME games on 33rd STREET.. i mean Dolan, isn't stupid, is he?

Senior night at the Garden sucks. Most of the real fans are too far from the court. On this topic at least it shows Lavin is out of touch with the importance of an on campus arena.

Agreed. When we are good there is no comparison to the atmosphere in the Garden. But even when we are good, senior night should be at CA. Most obvious example is 10/11. As great as the Garden experience was that year, having senior night at CA v. USF was incredible. I still get the chills thinking back to Rob Thomas' introduction, the much deserved applause he got and him not being able to hold back the emotion. The energy in that place was incredible.

Maybe, if we became a year-in, year-out Top 25 team, you could schedule Villanova or Georgetown in the Garden in early March and replicate that type of atmosphere for senior night. There are a lot of factors and it's up for debate. But right now senior night should exclusively be at CA.

Carnessecca is such a crap hole. They spent $25 million to renovate and it still looks outdated and a NEC building expect for LIU. They should have gutted Carnessecca and turned it in student athletic recreation (pool and better gym). They should have built a new 8,000 bowl seat arena on the old football field or bulldozed ROTC building and move them to old student center. I would play 6 games a year at MSG. The school could have sold naming rights to the building maybe established a Mens hockey program and rent out to a Minor League Club

In other news its being reported that Steve Lavin is responsible for the recent tumble in the stock market. lol, some guys will find anyway to blame Lavin for anything. How about this, we give him the rest of this season and next to show progress on the court and if not then we can look to go in another direction.

I have to agree. A modern on campus arena would be a worthy investment. With all the students that St. John's has, I don't know why they don't have any money.

With all the money he gets paid, he probably has a lot in the market. Maybe January's dip will get him out recruiting.

Manetta's plan was to expand Alumni...

My opinion was that he was a good AD. I wonder what others here thought of him

Very smart guy.

Mannetta was a very good Ad. No telling where we would be as an athletic power if he didn't have his
hands tied.

Mannetta hired a number of the present coaches like Blankmeyer, Masur, Persico Smith and a couple more. His hires have all been here for over 18 years.

Thanks for your feedback on Manetta. I always held a high opinion of him. First, when he was a student, he used to ref intramural and frat basketball games. Unlike a few guys on the baseball team who refereed and were generally wises asses, Ed was always fair and treated everyone with respect. You may be aware that his dad was chairman of the Art department for many years, and that St. John's fine arts was fairly well regarded because of him. When Ed became AD, he immediately did something unprecedented - he surveyed all season ticket holders and asked our opinions as to everything from the facility to how the program was run. It was the first time anyone ever formally asked season ticket holders for their opinions. Third, he stood up to Fraschilla from Day 1, when Frannie offered assistants positions and announced them without consulting Ed or anyone else at the University. And fourth, he had the ethics to fire Fraschilla even though the program was winning.

Not sure why he left, but its possible someone here knows. I think he went to a sports marketing firm.

Inasmuch as I enjoy going to games at CA, it is a glorified high school gym. We need a President to bring this entire University to the next level both academically as well as athletically. A basketball facility which seats 8 to 10 thousand in seats not bleachers would be appropriate!

I had Ed as professor. His class was more of lecture hall and would bring in guests. He and his company took it on the chin a couple years back with the College Bash which was suppose to bring concert acts to big schools during opening weekend for Spring Practice. Over past twenty years St.John's has come a long way. They're so many kids who go to school from out of state and international kids. Refurbishing Carnesecca Arena was throwing money away. It still looks like a glorified HS gym and still mostly bleacher seating. If they were going to refurbish they could have made the place similar to Moody Coliseum (SMU). I remember taking a tour Erin McDonough (nice lady) was bragging about the joint. They put makeup on a pig when comes to the building.

I hope school would consider Quinnipiac President for our next President. He has done a great job would really get things done here..

All our Home Games should be at MSG, as part of doubleheaders with other local schools. Manhattan, Fordham, Iona,St. Peters, Hofstra. First game 6pm, second game 8pm..

Or, like today, playing a BE game as part of a national OOC game Doubleheader.

Of course, we would need more than 6000 fans to show up but, including the other local schools could get total attendance over 10,000? Or more.

All our local programs need to improve their winning percentage and become crowd attractions. It isn't just us...

The Fordham program is a disgrace and has been for far too long.. They should go back to the MAAC.

Better local teams can get the GARDEN attendance up, so all the schools benefit.
