Can We Please Stop With The...

We've been referred to as the Johnnies for as far back as I can remember (and that goes back a while), so what's the problem? I've always liked it, and I always will.

And as MainMan stated earlier, let the fans in the student section call us what they want to call us. ... just as long as it's loud (and, ideally, not profane).

And for the 1,000,000th time: Some of us may always think fondly, if not passionately, about the name Redmen, but it's a thing of the past and it ain't ever coming back ... so once again: get over it!

we finally have something to cheer about. who cares if it's "let's go red storm". if we win a basketball national championship you'll all be chanting it.

Agree completely. I always liked Johnnies.

I love Let's Go Redmen, I still chant it at the games.

Next up would be "We are St. John's"

Finallly it would be "Let's Go Johnnies"

Good to know that Red Storm is not being used, also intresting to point out that in FH's letter in the latest alumni magazine he says"Johnnies' return to prominence" and not "Red Storm return to prominence" .

Do you think that in a couple of years the school changes it's nickname to the Johnnies?

I still like The Red Swarm - red bees - great mascot for a swarming D

OK, so I expect that this post will create some controversy but that's what these chat boards are for ; ) A few years ago fans/students started chanting "Lets Go Johnnies" at our games. I was surprised since for most of us here, we have always been the Redmen, especially when you consider the name of this site. I could be wrong but the new chants may have started around the time that the Johnny Jungle site started up. Now I am only one man with one man's opinion but I am making an open plea to students and fans to please stop the Lets Go Johnnies chants.

Here are my reasons why; first off, as I said we are the Redmen, have always been & in my book will always be. I have never uttered the name Red Storm at any athletic event as a chant but I would probably do so before ever using the name Johnnie. Additionally, there is a Division 3 school in Minnesota called Saint John's University and yes, they are the Johnnies. Here is there website. http://www.gojohnnies.com/. I don't expect many people to confuse the schools but why would we even want to be in that conversation?

Yes, I know that the name Johnnies is our secondary nickname like the Bronx Bombers for the Yankees, the Amazins' for the Mets, Big Blue and Gang Green for the Giants and Jets, and the Broadway Blues for the Rangers. However, none of those fans ever ever use those secondary nicknames as chants during the games. They say Lets Go Yankees, Lets Go Mets, J-E-T-S, Jets Jets Jets. With that I ask that we chant Lets Go Redmen or even Lets Go St. John's but please let us stop calling ourselves the Johnnies during the games. We Are St. John's, we are not Saint John's. ; )

Thoughts, comments, discussion greatly appreciated.
IMO, Johnnies is better than RedStorm.

I have never liked Johnnies. Truth be told, I hate it. I don't know why everyone has to keep dwelling on Redmen. Didn't like that one either. I found it dull like Orangemen. I have always loved the name Red Storm. It stands out. It's different. I find it to be a more exciting name than Redmen. Sound it out, St. John's Red Storm, St. John's Redmen. The 2nd one puts you to sleep. It's boring. It's the only thing about St. John's history that I don't like. I'm glad we changed that boring old name. We wear red. We should call ourselves the Red Men! We wear orange. We should call ourselves the Orange Men! Yeah, a lot of thought went into coming up with those 2 names!

I like Red Atmospheric Disturbance with Wind, Rain, Snow, and/or thunder and Lightning! That required a lot of thought! :silly: Have a great Labor Day weekend everybody

As the author of this post I now vote to put it to rest. I have to admit I am surprised by the number of people who admit that they like the chant Johnnies. It's clear that not everyone who replied actually read my original post. I know we have always been referred to informally as the Johnnies. I know that it was what we were known as before the Redmen name started. My point was that despite that it was never ever chanted at games until recently. Interestingly enough, the students today have no problem using chants at other sporting events referring to us as the Red Storm:

This video clip which I posted once before is from a soccer game. Truth be told, if we continue to get this type of support from our students/fans at our basketball games then I think we will all be happy. Have a great Labor Day weekend everyone and Lets Go Redmen....Lets Go St. John's.

1. Johnnies pre-dated Redmen.

2. Red Men was from a reporter for the NY Times referring to our football uniforms. (St. John's was an all male school and the graduates were St. John's Men, like Fordham Men, as Alum of those schools were known, back in the day.)

3. Red Storm was endorsed by the legendary HOF-er Looie C., and other notables, so it's fine by me. Many other fine schools dropped the native American Indian thing, it's okay.

4. Unofficially no one can stop us from being the Redmen, but what about our 50+% students and Alum of the fairer gender, "Lady" Redmen" does not work on any level. (Lady) Redwomen is horrible. And the Washington Redskins, now that is offensive. And I am the farthest thing from "politically correct", just ask my daughters!

5. Johnnies is fine as an alternate name, I kind of like Let's Go Johnnies!, it sounds good especially when shouted in unison by 19,500 at The Garden. WE ARE. St. JOHN'S! another good one.

6. Teams have lots of alternate names, Red Storm, Johnnies, Redmen, St. John's, SJU, StJ, it's all good especially nowadays.

I want a team name that represent "winning." If we win, the rest takes care of itself. Fans will buy a t-shirt for the St. John's Rocks if it also says National Champion on it.

It's all good - get KA on board, and it's on with the rest of the Beast

A few years ago people were complaining because our student section and fan base/attendance were terrible. Now that we actually have fans, you aren't happy with the way they are cheering? What is ever going to make you happy?

If you have a problem with the chants, then I have a proposal for you: Before every home game, why don't you personally call EVERY person that purchased a ticket, and thoroughly explain to them the cheers that you find acceptable. That way, people can still cheer and please you at the same time.

Fans are a group of people that share a genuine passion for both the sport and their favorite team. Does it really matter what they are saying, as long as they are showing support, passion and enthusiasm?

If you consider yourself a fan, and a true fan of St. Johns basketball, I am almost embarrassed to call myself one....

One other thing -- and this has been brought up in earlier threads: Regardless of the origin of Redmen, somewhere along the line the school adopted the image of an American Indian to represent that nickname, and by late-60s, that image had morphed into the officially sanctioned (and promoted) figure many of us remember well (it appears on this site as someone's avatar): a goofy-looking Indian with an over-sized head & nose and a small body (a caricature of Looie?) in a silly pose. So regardless of its original meaning, most alums & fans recognize the Redmen=Indians connection -- and despite our fondness for it and that it remains an integral and cherished part of our sports vocabulary (although it probably means little or nothing to younger alums and current students), neither Matt Brust's nor anyone else's efforts are going to bring it back. That shipped has sailed.

That said, I agree with Brooklyn Redmen: Students (and fans) loudly and enthusiastically shouting out any our nicknames, as they're now doing, is good thing. And it's only going to get better. (Question: Has the student band ever played Chuck Berry's "Go, John[nies] Go"? If not, I think they should.)

Hey Jumbo Peanut, I am not sure why you are embarrassed but I really don't care, I am sure if you have a good reason for it. If you bothered to read my second post on this thread you would have seen that I posted that the bottom line is winning and then we will all be happy. The point of this thread was to get other people's thoughts about a relative new trend at St. John's home games. I don't like the Johnnies chant but who cares, I am one person. I have been a season ticket holder since the late 80s so I don't have to answer to you or anyone else when it comes to expressing a thought or opinion. Most people have said they prefer the Johnnies chant so I've accepted it and for a second time on this thread I thank everyone for their input/contribution and say we move on to another thread.

i dont think we need a mascot or a nickname. we certainly dont need a guy in a red tuxedo, a lightning horse OR a thunderhawk. we are: st johns.

If I am not mistaken, over the years, the school band HAS played Chuck Berry's "Go, Johnny Go" or "Johnny B. Good", whatever the song is called, it is a great song!

Go Johnny(ies) Go!!!!!!!

I think that is a perfect chant, song, sing-a-long, et. al., for when we hold the John Wooden Trophy, I really think that it is going to happen in my lifetime.

Brooklyn Redmen a/k/a bmoran

Don't remember ever hearing it played. Then again, seems like I remember less and less these days ... including the name of the Chuck Berry song, which is, as you've pointed out, "Johnny B. Goode" [with an "e"].

Abandoning "Red Storm" should be a higher priority than suppressing "let's go Johnnies" chants.

I'd rather be the Johnnies than the Red Storm (ugh, yech, putrid).

Bring back the original: Redmen (yes I know it's hopeless).

NOTE TO WILFREDO RUIZ: TURN OFF THE CAPS LOCK.

I'll take Johnnies over Red Storm, and Redmen over Johnnies. I prefer Redmen as a quietr form of civil disobedience. I always thought that for a PC name change to resonate, the university could have done something material to help the plight of native Americans (in the pre-casino era that have made many tribes pretty wealthy).

But they didn't.
