Can a Billionaire Buy St. John’s a Basketball Championship?

Terrible title, incomplete article. Not awful but far from high level journalism. I have no issue with a non sports reporter taking an in depth look at this subject, but he misses the bigger picture by aiming to give readers what (he thinks) they want to read. It's almost like he got the idea for the title first and wrote the article to match.

This story is now prominently on today's front page of the New York Times hard copy newspaper, with a new photo and new headline:
"New M.V.P. at St John's: A 56-Year-Old Billionaire"
Gotta hand it to Repole, you simply cannot buy this kind of publicity!

No disrespect to other newspapers which have put us on the cover page this year, I love reading those articles, but front page of the NYT is on a different level in terms of exposure and totally unbelievable. Never would've thought we'd receive this kind of press, go on Fallon, etc. unless we won a National Championship.

Difference is NCAA never penalized UCLA/Wooden but did penalize Louisville/Pitino (SMU would be another interesting example of getting penalized). I think it would add more nuance and interesting context that what's happening in college sports is both new and not new. Instead, this whole article seems to just be picking on St. John's as what's wrong with college sports today.
The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky they're going to give Cleveland State another year of probation. -Jerry Tarkanian
