Can a Billionaire Buy St. John’s a Basketball Championship?

Difference is NCAA never penalized UCLA/Wooden but did penalize Louisville/Pitino (SMU would be another interesting example of getting penalized). I think it would add more nuance and interesting context that what's happening in college sports is both new and not new. Instead, this whole article seems to just be picking on St. John's as what's wrong with college sports today.
If having money is wrong I don't want to be right.

Kansas is a lock to make the NCAA Tourney, they'll probably be around a 6 seed. Is that as good as they expected? No. But it's not like they're on skid row.
They may be an 8 or 9 seed and they are loaded with talent that was great at other schools, case in point Hunter Dickinson and AJ Storr.
They have clearly underperformed and probably did better pre NIL.
For the level of talent they have they should be much better.

If the NYT is attempting to shame a Catholic university for trying to be competitive by using rules in place; rules by the way, that sprouted due to the ineptitude of a secular body, the NCAA, they are sadly mistaken.

Even during lent, none of us are sacrificing this fun season. If they claim this is sinful behavior, then I will go to confession and say 10 Hail Mary’s and an Our Father and go back to rooting like hell.

When you really get down to it, the fairest basketball competitions were played in schoolyards when you choose sides. Everything organized in one way or another is corrupted - cyo coaches grabbing a player from.another parish because they were good, aau travel teams assembling talent like they are gms, high schools moving kids into their district even with lids living in a coach's house. Naturally the more that's at stake, money or some form.of compensation is there. College is big time, and now players are bought above board.

Don't think for a second that Repole has bankrolled this entire budget. There is a small army of donors snd supporters who have been providing $$ for years and years. Repole does put us over the top though. Let's be real. St. Mike got rich selling colored water, and you really have to be able to sell to make it in thst market, and was of his best talents is self promotion.

The NY Times is a shell of its former self . It’s becoming a tabloid of unequal reporting on facts

I agree with Kranmars , Times didn’t mentiona word about State Universities that have nearlyunlimited funds for their Athletic programs.

But , let’s focus on St John’s having a Billionaire Alum who supports his School.

When in doubt suspect point guard troubles.

If you take away the click bait headline, I felt the article was fair. Kind of just shared the facts and realities of the situation and kind of shared Repole's personal story.
Totally agree. Not sure why people here are overreacting; tbh its kinda lame.

I mean, they maybe could have done a better job of emphasizing that every successful program has a guy like Repole (often a bunch more). But other than that it was pretty fair. And for those complaining about its portrayal of Repole, I urge you to talk to anyone who's spent more than a few minutes with him. Love what he's done for the program but lets just say he's not everyone's cup of tea.

I don’t like phony reporters the Times had great people like Dave Anderson, now you got clowns. They love to parachute into things.
The problem is this is a Metro section reporter who typically covers other metro related stories, like the mayor's race, crime, pollution in Jamaica Bay, bike lanes...you get the idea. Surely, he has no intimate knowledge of the college sports landscape today, like the reporters at The Athletic, which the Times uses as its sports section. Plus, there's no mention of NIL/donors at big football schools, which is 10X the situation in basketball. Typical snark job by the NYT.

what a rag, besides them being UConn fans how about them and Dailynews just not cover sports. First off they don’t have the reporters/respected journalists and when they do you get dogsh$t like this.

Not defending this article or the NYT more generally, BUT FWIW the NYT now owns The Athletic which has some outstanding journalists and has replaced the entire NYT sports section.

As the saying goes "no publicity is bad publicity" and Repole has now clearly established himself as the defacto "majority owner" of the St John's basketball team, one of the hottest teams in the media capital of the world. Articles like this just reinforce his "majority ownership" status. The guy is a brilliant marketer and self promoter, I will say that!

Methinks thy redmen.comers doth protest too much.

I'm sure Repole will have this article framed and mounted on his wall if he hasn't already.

My older brother still gets his daily copy of the Times in Florida, reads it cover to cover and often mails me sports articles he thinks I'll be interested in. From what I can tell most are "sports" articles written by non sports writers who come at every story from either a human interest or political perspective.

Within ten years there will be actual owners of college teams and athletic programs. That's where this is all trending.

The least valuable NBA franchise is the Grizzlies; they're worth an estimated $3.2 billion. If you're an aspiring franchise owner but don't have that kid of scratch, you can buy St. John's basketball (or Kansas, Kentucky or Duke for that matter) for a lot less than that. Soon you will be able to IMO.

Question for someone in the know. I saw where Pitino thanks Dolan. Does that mean he is helping money wise or just other things?

Whatever. 4 million for Repole is a drop in the bucket.

Hey Mike! My bucket is quite parched. A drop will do.

And , The NY Times has been a shill for a Agenda that is always political .

Watch for them asking why we don’t have a Transgender on our Women’s team. .
It’s coming .

Author was not a sports reporter, but he mainly covers crime and criminal justice; thus no knowledge of NIL and what truly went on before NIL. Actually NIL is cleaning up all the under the table bullspit. As to Mike Repole being this major player in NIL, he is mistaken. Mike is a majot player at St. Johns but maybe he would be considered a small fish in terms of atletic donor. Look at OK. ST. an d T Boone Pickens ($165 M for athletic complex and he has given an aggregate of over $650M to date to athletic programs there. Phil Knight has made Oregon into Nike U over the years. Under Armour owner gave over $ 25M to the Terps about 10 years ago.

This reporter has to go back to school as there is no crime in what Mike is doing; it is all allowable under NIL rules. Furthermore, it is not about spending the most NIL money, it is about spending it on the right guys. How much did Rutgers spend on its 2 five-star frosh and what did it get them???
