Calhoun Retiring

I saw Donnie Marshall on a sports panel show with our Tarik Turner, and IMHO Donnie came across great, very articulate, relevant, smart and poised. He spoke fondly of how JC molded him into a man. He said for a lot of the inner City players with no fathers in their lives, JC could relate to them and help at least many of them. I forgot all about the Mineland thing, but probably so did Charles.

JC--I have no idea if he goes to Mass (I hear that he does, but so does John Calipari), I have no idea if he boxed(?). But I don't think anyone on here will disagree that he had a tough attitude. He left college when his father died when JC was a young teenager and helped his mom raise the other kids. He held many menial jobs along the way, and led his college team (American International U. in hardscrabble Springfield, MA) in scoring his Jr./Sr. year.

The man is in the BB HoF for cripes sake, and he has done a lot for College BB in the NE, let's not re-write history just because we don't like him.

George Blaney, nice guy, head coached at Holy Cross and he is staying on to assist Ollie. I think for Blaney to stay with JC for so long tells me that JC must have some good attributes. Blaney is a class-act all the way.

Off the court, Donnie Marshall is a very different person and is very impressive and charming.

Calhoun is a legend and was great for BE BB. I wish he wasnt retiring and Boeheim was.

Very good article in the NY Times Sports on Calhoun, the good, the bad and the in-between.

(this one not so complimentary):http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/14/sports/for-uconns-calhoun-its-time-to-go.html

Complicated history he leaves behind, he is like Coach K without the good publicity. A rat is really just a squirrel without good P.R.!!

I’d like to know what skeletons lie in Coach K.’s closet, we’ve all heard of Calhoun’s.

That stuttering legend is retiring on his job bec, his team has No ncaa bid & the new president of uconn did a long overdue academic in house study of athletic dept.
hes also forcing uconn to hire ollie this yr with his retiring timing so late

That man you call a legend had a player graduation rate of 30% thats a disgrace :furious:

Fair enough but is it so different from other elite bball schools?
He won't be the first coach or the last coach to have a poor graduation rate.
In a few seasons when the program has collapsed, if they don't bring in a top level staff, the alumni wont give a crap about the graduation rate as all they will be looking at is the irrelevance of their program.
Are Syracuse fans asking for Boeheim to be dismissed notwithstanding all of the transgressions that have occurred under his reign, hell no, they are looking at the school's pre-season high ranking and watching their team do well during the long cold winter.
Lets face it only fans of other programs care about isolated negative things they can find in other more successful programs.

I think all Elite coaches that dont have students going to class & graduating should be fined by the school.
There must be a minimum standard of 65% graduation or the coaches pay fines period bec, they are getting rich off
exploiting athletes & so is the school. There are majors available in sports administration or broadcasting that
these athletes can take to graduate with.
Again I bring up Jerry Tarktanian who built unlv into a 80' powerhouse not so different then jim calhoun
jerry was put into the hall of shame but calhoun the hall of fame???
