C7 Update

C7 takes it on the chin again tonight with Cuse win over Gtown. Newsie must be happy with
the infidels. He certainly is going to miss those majors.
Look for Louisville Syracuse final. One of them will take the last Big East title with them to the ACC.

why should i be happy???

the acc has three of the final fours in the big east...and the big east final. this is a preview of what the garden can expect if the acc decides to kick the new big east out.

this is what i've been warning about. we could have had a power conference...but you need people with cojones and they're sadly missing from the hierarcy.

Power conference?
You mean your idea of building a 32 team super conference? Is that what you mean for people with cojones
Yeah 20k seats split 32 ways for the teams. That should make it real fun atmosphere

If it irks me to see this what does the administration feel. You know the ones who hired Jarvis and Roberts.

a public school doesn't fit the profile. Many schools in the Catholic Seven are enamored with VCU, especially because the league's bottom four teams -- Providence, DePaul, Seton Hall and St. John's -- have combined to win just won NCAA tournament game in the last 10 years

It really depends on what this conference is going for. If it is trying to create a power basketball conference, then the answer is probably to bring in St. Louis and either Richmond or VCU. If loyalty and staying true to the Catholic institutions is more important, then it is St. Louis and Dayton.

I don't really think either choice is really a bad one per se. What I will say however is that by inviting Butler to the mix kind of kicks the legs out of the Catholic argument. If it had only brought in Xavier and Creighton, then I could see more of a reason to just bring in St. Louis and Dayton.
Kick the legs out of what Catholic institution. Maybe I was not paying attention, but I had not heard that term used. I thought the non football playing schools were forming a basketball conference. When Butler showed an interest in being a member, what did they think they were joining? Money counts, and from here it seems Fox is putting up most of that stuff. What did Fox think they were getting involved with? Was there a Catholic argument.Who was it who brought up loyalty and staying true to Catholic institutions? Was it Fox broadcasting or one of the schools? As was stated on these boards the term C7 was started by the press, not the institutions involved. I remember some posting that the C7 term made some feel uncomfortable. So, forgive all my gabbing and let me know what it is we are going for. Thanks.

Marquette and G'town tied for the Conference Championship. The ACC bound L'ville also shared.

G'town lost a close game to SU that could have gone either way.. If Porter had a better game, the Hoyas might have won.

Villanova has a good program , with 1 poor year, since Wright started a consecutive string of NCAA performances.

The rest, SJU, SH, PC, DePAUL have to improve their performances and all 4 need help.

We won't have traditional doormats like Rutgers, USF to pad the win column. Cinn was so so in their BE tenure. And, will anyone miss Uconn?

The current bottom 4 of the Catholic 7 need to get to where G'town and Marquette are now.. It was a good year for the Jesuits.. Hoyas and Golden Eagles, and, a new POPE..

I'm watching VCU rock umass right now.
They travel so well it sounds like they're playing in Richmond, not B'lyn.

The problem with State schools is that they are subject to the controls and budgetary authority of state government/politicians. I don't know if that factor may be under consideration by the Big East. They may have more resources in good economic times (unfair advantage) and less in bad economic times. I'm no expert on these things. Just speculating.

You have to be cautious with a school like VCU because of their size. The schools that currently make up the Big East are small to medium sized institutions (10k to 15k). Some are even smaller.

VCU is a state school with an enrollment of 31k. It doesn't make its primary money from donations. It makes it from the state. Apples and oranges.

The Univ. of Maryland's deal to join the Big Ten "includes not only the lucrative annual payouts that all members receive, but also a significant concession obtained by the school -- a subsidy worth tens of millions of dollars from the conference to offset athletic teams' anticipated higher travel costs," according to sources cited by Jeff Barker of the Baltimore SUN. The subsidy "made an already appealing offer of Big Ten membership even more attractive to the school." Sources said that the subsidy is "in the range of $20 million to $30 million." The cost of "sending its teams halfway across the country ... was projected by the school to approximately double its travel budget." Maryland's travel budget for '12-13 is about $3M, while the projected figure for '14-15 -- the school's first year in the Big Ten -- is $6M. The subsidy "underscores how much the Big Ten coveted Maryland and the accompanying Baltimore-Washington television market." It was "not clear when the subsidy is to be received and whether it will be a lump sum or series of payments." Rutgers also has "studied the implications of Big Ten travel and is exploring creative solutions, but apparently not subsidies" (Baltimore SUN, 3/16).

Newsie, I don;t want to imply that you were happy with the state of the Johnnie's or other C7 schools vs. the non C7's. Only that you correctly predicted the outcomes. Also your fear that without the excellent competition with the state/private schools that emphasize athletics, the C7 could metamorphose to a
weaker league. In order to stay strong you must test yourself. Certainly St. John's tutelage of their precious basketball program has been anything but stellar.
In fact it is a textbook case on how to ruin a prominent program. And to think at one time Joe Lapchich was the highest paid college coach in the country,or near to it while at St.John's.

I am told that the New Big East will announce tomorrow that is has reach a long term agreement with Madison Square Garden to host the Big East Tournament.

All over Twitter.

This was in the comments section from the above article.

The following was just sent to Creighton students and ticket holders 10 mins ago. I think this will be for the announcement.

The campus community, alumni and Bluejay fans are invited to a special University event on Wednesday, March 20 at 10 a.m. at the D.J. Sokol Arena inside the Wayne and Eileen Ryan Athletic Center on the Creighton campus. This is a special moment in history for the University and Creighton Athletics.
Go Jays!
