I think SH had interest, but never offered.

At the end of the day St. John's are the ones with egg on their face due to Lavin's colossal recruiting failures. We have a roster next year that couldn't compete in the CHSAA (if the predicted early departures happen) and Lavin has experienced his biggest coaching failure to this day fielding the 2015 recruiting class which, based on what we need coming in, is a slap in the face to the university and the fan base who have put up with this west coast buffoon's BS for too long now. Lavin is a Complete and utter failure and the epitome of the word ineptitude.

Hard not to agree with what you have said
However, I want to withhold final judgment until the spring
If Lavin doesn't pull some rabbits out of his hat (ie: Sampson, Diallo, etc), I would fully endorse your sentiments

Zach is a parrot, he has no original thought. He just processes information given to him by someone else. He has never seen Samir play, and has no clue what progress he has made year over year. He would never said that Briscoe was the best pg in the country last year...But Lavin did!!! So I wouldn't worry about anything that comes out of Zach's mouth.
I wouldn't say this recruiting cycle is a failure as there are plenty still on the board and lots of kids will transfer from other schools..

Zach said the other night that Syracuse is not a top 25 team this year..He was surprised Cal was beating Cuse..Cal has a good team..They will be a top 25 team. Point is he never saw Cal play and went off the pac 12 predictions of Cal being picked near the bottom..Maybe if Zach did some research he would know Cal has a pretty good team, and was a match up nightmare for Cuse..

Tom who cares if he ever saw Samir play, Zach is a sportswriter and not a college recruiter. The bottom line is we will be replacing two pgs, 1 of whom was rated number 17 and the other number 52 with a player recruited by mid-majors who is ranked 196 in his class. Sorry but I trust the experts and not our resident experts who glamorize every recruit who commits to SJU.
No one other than crack smoking posters on this board are making Samir out to be a savior.
Am I happy Samir committed to SJU sure I am as we need any warm body who ca n bounce a ball, is not 300 plus pounds and is not a huge academic liability. How ever if he turns out to be Eugene Lawrence I hope our great fan base will remember that he was the only guard Lavin could convince to come to SJU in the last two recruiting classes and not hold it against him when he is presented the keys to the offense next season and has to play 30 plus minutes a game and will be backed up by two walk-ons.
You want to reserve judgment on the 2015 recruiting class good for you, I respect your decision. However the bottom line is 85 percent of the top 100 players, who for all intensive purposes are the difference makers are gone. As some on this board would say we are left picking at the scraps, academic question marks, injured players and hoping a transfer gives us a sniff, excuse me but that is a loosing formula for all intensive purposes. Lavin's last seasons record at UCLA was 10-19 I believe. Barring a miracle I see the same record at SJU next season. I hope and pray I am wrong but I don't believe in miracles but rather hard work and preparation.
As I tell my kids daily failure to prepare is equivalent to preparing to fail.
SJU failed to prepare.

Prior to Steve Lavin being hired at STJ you couldn't purchase STJ gear outside the tri-state area, and most Modell's didn't carry STJ hats or gear. We were nobody. Now you can purchase STJ hats and shirts in Raleigh, Durham, Lexington Ky, L.A. That is about building a brand. We had no brand after Jarvis messed the program up.
Lavin has been trying to compete against the major league programs, albeit he has lost on McCullough, Briscoe and others, but we are relevant again recruiting. Read Zachs article talking about how smart Rutgers was for pulling out of the Briscoe running. Well maybe Rutgers didn't see themselves able to compete with the big boys. Lavin thinks we are the big boys and went all in. He thinks more of the program than most of the fans, but yet we sit here again bashing him for all the problems in the world. You mentioned a top 17 guard and top 52 guard that Samir would be replacing, well who signed that top 17 guard and top 52 guard? Lavin.
The other problem is talented kids leave NYC before H.S. they come to places like NC, SC, GA to go to Christian schools, or they go to NJ.. There is no hotbed of local NYC talent anymore.. Once in awhile you have a stud in NYC but that is far and few between these days. NYC used to be a hot bed for PGs back in the day...Look around how many NBA pg's are NYC kids..
Building a national brand takes time.. Lavin had been recruiting nationally and internationally. You guys scream loud enough for long enough and Lavin may leave or be fired, and my fear is you will end up starting all over again with an inferior product running the program. You sound like the Duke fans after Coach K's second year were calling for him to be fired.

I understand your points. However, after five years, the time for excuses has past. I don't think anyone blames Coach Lavin for targeting the likes of Briscoe and Diallo. It makes perfect sense to have a couple of "reach" targets.

That said, he didn't seem to hedge very much at all. I think it is reasonable to expect that, at this point, we should have 1 or 2 commits in the 50-100 ranked range. This is especially true when considering the number of available scholarships. Unfortunately, to redmannorth's point, there are currently only 3 players in this range remaining.

Either Lavin lost his recruiting mojo or just got lazy
Neither is acceptable to me!!
He took last year off and hasn't done much to date this year
Having said that, I am willing to wait until spring to see what happens
But, if things don't radically improve, I would agree that Lavin has to go
Making the NCAA this year shouldn't give him a pass
If he hasn't prepared properly for the next few years, shame on him!!
I am not satisfied making the NCAA 2 out of every 5 years
Unless Lavin pulls a miracle out of his arse, it will be years before we dance again

I have yet to see a poster call Samir a savior.

Zach's article was as he stated, full of hyperbole because he has no idea about none of the recruits he's writing about. Just like his story on Hofstra having the most NY talent and Isaiah Whitehead taking college as he said "by Storm".

I am the last person that will ever defend Lavin.

But I'm also not going to lump his successes, failures and excessive over exaggerations on Samir. One has nothing to do with the other.

Samir committed without another recruit in sight to play alongside and with bare cupboards for next year and we should all be happy that he did regardless of his ranking.

Ask recruiting experts as you call them who is a better prospect: Samir or Desure.

Zach giving Rutgers credit for backing off of Briscoe is like saying Steve Urkel stopped pursuing Beyoncé.

During the 2014 recruiting class, I defended Lavin throughout. I said that he was putting his focus on 2015 so we should wait. He said so, and because of his track record with the 2011, 2012 classes I believed he would come through the way he has before for SJU.

JohnnyFan, who has been consistent in bashing Lavin for a long time now, asked me what it take for me to stop supporting lavin months ago. I said it would take Lavin to fail with the 2015 class even though he said he was focusing on it.

A lot of people hated how he skipped 2014, but would you still complain if he got a class of:

Diallo
Sampson
Briscoe
Doughty
Akele
Freeman
Carter

I sure as hell wouldn't. But he ended up missing probably 3 of those 7 and the 3 he did miss were the great ones. I am still pulling for Lavin but it seems at this point whoever he recruits is going to need coaching to succeed and it is coaching that he simply can not provide.

If we miss the tournament I'd rather fire Lavin after this year, get a coach to come in, implement a good system, have a rebuilding season where we miss the tournament but play good fundamental basketball that sets a foundation for the future.

We will see what happens.

Ummm there is barely any SJU apparel in the Tri State area and you are saying you can buy it in NC, Kentucky and LA????????

I guess that means that there are more SJU fans in NC, Kentucky and LA than there are in the Tri State area B)

Marillac thinks this is the best and funniest analogy this board has seen in 2015.

Don't see how he could possibly pull a miracle for next year unless he lands both Diallo and Samson, and then fills out the roster with a combination of lower ranked kids and JUCO transfers. Anything less than that and we'll be going in to next year with a roster of Normesque level talent, and that's being extremely generous. And if Lavin couldn't win with top 100 talent then he most certainly is not going to win with lower level talent.
