Brad Stevens Leaves for the NBA

Just saw this as I was leaving a Tavern. Knew after two beers I wasn't drunk so I couldn't be dreaming. Damn.

It's a blow, but only a temporary one, and not as big as most are making it out to be, IMO.

Todd Lickliter, who proceeded Stevens, took Butler to the Sweet Sixteen in 2007, and their current AD, Barry Collier, had them in the NCAAs quite frequently in the late 90s. Granted, they didn't do what Stevens did, but they have shown a knack for hiring good coaches, and I'm sure the budget has been increased substantially with the 2 conference moves the last 2 years.

Their best bet for credibility in the new league, IMO, would be a recently disposed of NBA coach who was successful in college. Obviously PJ would be the first name to come to mind, but he has shown no interest in returning to the college game. My guess is, they land on their feet before too long.

If you go back a few months, when there was talk of Butler joining the Big East, I posted multiple times that my concern over Butler was that should Stevens leave, the program would likely revert to just another mid major program. At the time I was concerned mostly about the UCLA job, with Howland on the ropes at the time. Those of you who follow these things more closely than I felt that he was locked in at Butler. I believe he had just signed a long term deal, however in college sports these deals tend to bind the school to a coach and not the other way around.

On an unrelated note, some of you are aware that since my son was 8 or so, I've written to former pro athletes and college basketball coaches around my son's birthday, asking them to send birthday greetings that I pre-stamp and address. Over that time, coaches like the late John Wooden, a healthier Dean Smith, Jim Boeheim, Rick Pitino, Coach Lou C. (of course), Jay Wright, even Norm and other have sent cards, many with warm greetings and notes of advice and encouragement. This year I wrote to Stevens, and did not hear back. That makes only three coaches over ten years - Stevens, John Thompson III, and Steve Lavin who couldn't find the time to sign a card and drop it in their outbox. At least Stevens had his mind in other places.

What a loss for the Big East, who certainly did not do sufficient due diligence before adding Butler, who now looks like an ugly duck in conference.

LOL

@STJCoachLavin: News Flash: Butler Coach Brad Stevens to the Celtics. Must have been a glacier sized chunk of cheddar! Good for Brad. Congrats. #stjbb

And some of you are making this out to be bigger than it is. Great coach and a great mind. But this guy is young. He wasn't staying at Butler forever.

dunlap would be a quality hire. i'm just hoping they don't go on the cheap and morph into another depaul, seton hall or pre-lavin st john's.

I hope you meant to say you hope the DON'T go on the cheap. Need as many quality teams in this league as we can get (with the Johnnies being the best, of course).

Blow to the Big East, but relax people. A head coach is not everything. A program itself can get another good coach just from its prestige. Butler can still attract good talent.

i edited my post before your response. it must have crossed in the mail. in any event, we agree..

Was just trying to clear up.

I make the same mistake all the time, newsman. My spelling is usually off the mark, too.

Taking Butler was simply a bad idea from the start. It was obvious that Stevens was too big for that program and would not be there for long.

Umass or Dayton would have been better options. Now the BE has one more worthless mid-major whose name nobody will know 5 yrs from now.

They did just fine after Thad Matta left.

Sophisticated X and O and little interest in recruiting muck, Brad Stevens was natural for NBA jump. Celtics smart to hire him. Class guy

I would normally agree, but there are some coaches that make or break programs. Butler can be good from time to time without Stephens, but it never will reach those heights again.

I agree with you. Butler is in a tough spot. The kids that they recruit are generally 4 year players that are coached up. They are the number 4 destination in their state...behind Indiana, Notre Dame and Purdue. Hopefully they will not go the route of Valparaiso. (Post Homer Drew).
