So who we getting back?
Hard to leave San Diego once you've experienced their winter.

Williams on the other hand had better numbers here than he's had at home.

The one I want back is Rashawn McLeod.  North is going to get mad at me, but Mahoney gave way too much PT to Rowan Barrett who with the exception of a stellar game against Louisville was pretty mediocre.
IMO it was Fred Lyson who got too much PT while Ro Barrett didn't get enough (which may have cost us RJ-LOL). But yes McLeod didn't get enough PT.

It was Charles Minlend who took PT away from McLeod. They both played the 4.

Barrett was playing the 3.

Let’s not forget Qa’rraan Calhoun who was really starting to figure out norms system by game 28 of his freshmen year.

Wow.  Good memory.   Minlend was pretty good.  His son had a nice career at Louisville before a knee injury ended it.   McLeod did play parts of 3 seasons in the NBA though.

Roshown and Charles could have played together.  When you have talent like that, you figure it out.  You don’t reduce Roshown’s time and play Sergio Lyuk instead off the bench to relieve Minlend.  McLeod was definitely a goner then.

Mahoney did use his bench but I never understood Lyson over Barrett (who I was shocked never transferred), Lyuk and McLeod.

Calhoun was a lost and IIRC somewhat of a surprise as he stopped showing up in the summer and transferred in like late July.

I do agree that McLeod’s transfer to Duke was the one that hurt the most.  Incidentally, they were going to give him a shot at playing the 3, but due to injuries and transfers, he played the 4 like he did here.  Difference was he had plays and opportunities to showcase his skills both inside and outside and parlayed that in5o becoming a late first round pick.

Good post.   Pro pharmacy student bias here.   Yes McLeod going on to start at Duke was ridiculous loss for us considering we didn't value him as much.

Those Mahoney teams were extremely talented on paper.

Top 50 recruits at every position. Four guys who played in the league: Felipe, Zendon, McLeod, James Scott and another one coming in: Lavor Postell.

We would kill to have that level of recruiting again.

Of course, the Achilles Heel of those teams was the lack of a good PG. Tarik was top 50 but just didn't have it.

Plus the fact that he couldn’t coach. Another example of a bad coaching hire.

Swap out Tarik for Kareem Reid and I think Mahoney frequently looks like a genius in 95-96 instead of going 11-16.

Ironically it was Mike Anderson who was lead recruiter for Reid as I recall. A head turning recruitment btw :)

He took a team of nobodies that was picked to finish 9th in the BE to a 2nd place finish and winning a game in the dance in 92-93.... (before losing to Nolan Richardson and Mike Anderson in the 2nd round).

The reason: He had an elite PG emerge out of nowhere in David Cain.

He was never able to replace Cain. I remember him playing 2G Derek Brown out of desperation at PG for a stretch one year.
