Kudos to Coach McKillop for a tremendous year in guiding Davidson to the top of the heap, despite being picked to finish last in the A10. From his high school coaching days on Long Island to present day, all he has done is win. He won seven Southern Conference Tourney championships and now has Davidson ranked & is top seeded team in A10 Tourney. His teams are always well prepared, smart & fearless. That comes from the top. Pulling for him to make a little noise down the stretch.

Five years ago, I said that I wanted him at St John's instead of Lavin
The guy is "vanilla" but he can sure coach and has NY roots
Davidson was picked to be at/near the bottom of the A-10 this year
Look at them now
Great job Coach!!

Doubtful he'd leave Davidson after so long for another school.

Agree, great school & nice area to live. A10 made nice choice adding Davidson which I was skeptical about.

About eight years too late. He was the pick over Jarvis, but nobody saw it. The rest is history.

Oh c'mon. Six posts into a thread devoted to McKillop and not one mention of 125th St?!?! Some folks' games be slipping.

It's never too late to come home. For 2 million a year he can have a nice place in Queens or Long Island and a vacation home in North Carolina. I would sign up for that gig.

And to think I interviewed him for a varsity basketball and high school social studies job. Was about to hire him but received a call from a former ST.John's baseball teammate who also taught Social Studies and coached basketball at St.Mary's (Manhasset). Well McKillop lucked out and got the job at Holy Trinity H.S. and the rest is history.

We should have hired Bob after Fran was fired. If St. John's was not misguided by certain former coaches history would have been different. Bob has Queens roots and is an great x and o coach.
BTW, he was available when Mahoney was fired because in his 1st 4 years at Davidson he did not have one winning season. Only in his 5th year did he win 20 games. That record turned off the brass at St. John's. They should have realized Davidson recruits have to actually meet Davidson admissions standards unlike recruits at UNC and Duke in North Carolina. They are truly a southern ivy and Bob's kids all got a great Davidson education.

Far more likely that he'd try his hand at politics in NC before coming to SJU to coach. I don't think many posters realize just how hard and how long it takes to turn a team into a program. He's got a well oiled machine and comfortable gig at Davidson...I know I wouldn't leave if I were him.

Exactly, Marillac. Steve Donohue was the "hot" guy at Cornell, but seemed to flame out at Boston College. Fran McCaffery was hot after Siena, but was on the "hot seat" at Iowa before coming through this season. At one point, I probably would've said "yeah" to McKillop. But now, I'd probably lean towards "no." He can certainly coach, but just not sure if that's the "right" move now or if he would even wanna make the move anyhow.

If it isn't someone like Shaka Smart, Greg Marshall, or some coach of similar level, as '72 once stated, then keep what we have. Some of you same folks pumping the Hurley's or Mas will be the same one's ready to send 'em packing, if we're not "winning" the way y'all want to win.

He's been down there for 26 seasons now. Sometimes home ceases to be home when you've been somewhere else that long.

Great coach, we dropped the ball the first time around, hope he wins a whole bunch of games in the tournament.

Davidson coach since 1989. 7 NCAAs (3-7). 8 with this year.
Why is he a great coach? (495-297 .625)

Totally agree, and that is the way it should be. It is a results oriented business and if you are not getting the desired results what is wrong with making a change if the opinion is the person will not be able to get the job done. If you pay good money you should expect to get what you pay for. Never understood why changing basketball coaches is such a big deal to some. Do it until you get it right. And BTW I am at this point neutral on Lavin, leaning toward an extension with stips. Doesn't really matter anyway because it is not my decision and whatever the powers that be do I am really ok with it and will always remain the big fan of SJU I have been for over 40 years.

One-bid league most of his career. Recruiting limited by academic restrictions. The guy is a master game planner, and a great offensive mind. Check out how smooth his teams usually are with no-name recruits.
