If he spoke freely using this type of language on a public radio show, it leaves little doubt about how he talks and acts behind the scenes. The apology isn't even necessary because this is how he feels. I personally think he should get fired.
As is usually the case in a scenario like this, he's not sorry for what he said, he's sorry he was caught and it was public. Which makes him an incredible imbecile on top of a lot of other adjectives

I listened to the interview and he said what he said very cavalierly and almost defiantly. These guys get paid handsomely to represent the school and there's no excuse for this nonsense. If he were working for any major corporation and made a public statement like that, he'd be gone very quickly.
And that's coming from someone who always enjoyed watching his teams play and thinks he is a very good coach.

Inappropriate behavior
My god, you’re an awful human being…..
My, my .....we know who the delicate flowers are on this forum but I will add you to the list. Humor is not your strong point.

First of all, you now see how much of America thinks about what groups it sees as easy targets. Catholics and the Catholic church are high up on the list and it is ingrained in the mindset of millions of non Catholics because of the church's views on a host of social issues such as abortion, same sex marriage and conservatism.

What I find hypocritical is the outrage by people offended by almost everything without ever putting things in their context. Huggins was jokingly describing rubber penises being thrown on to court at a Catholic university. His bar room banter retort was obviously not what should be aired on public broadcasting.
He clearly fckd up. But all this outrage isn't really about Bobby mentioning "Catholics", it's what he associated them to, i.e., a protected class in our new great society.
You see, the Catholic church has been a target for years now.
Supreme Court Justices Thomas, Roberts and Amy Coney Barrett were all asked if their Catholic faith was influential in their jurisprudence.

So, when clowns rush in and call me a terrible human being in this thread, it is not because of use of the word "Catholic" by Huggins that really disgusts you, it is the term fags. One comment even went so far as to say they first thought the word used was fck but were obviously agast with the word fags. BTW, fags is cockney slang for smokes.

A gold star for those truly offended but to me a terrible person is one who thirsts for the complete destruction of a great coach where the loss of his livelihood is the only way nice people like you express your objection.

You see dear fellow, there is irony with the description of rubber penises being thrown on a court at a Catholic university just as there is in Trans women now dominating women's swimming competitions and track and field.

To each his own outrage when it comes to slang!

No words on how this is wrong, ill leave it at that and let the moderators do what they need to do. Wrong offensive.

The majority seem to want the man fired.
I don't because that would not be Catholic of me.
Chastise me, call me names, suspend me.
I don't get off on ruining other people's lives.
Period.

I'm not engaging you so don't respond, but a fag is slang for a cigarette in the uk, and is used to describe kindling wood used to start fires.

It is used as a slang for LGBT people because in earlier centuries gay men and women were burned alive at the stake, like witches, hence they were considered useless except to be used as "fags" or kindling.

You can participate in the culture wars without being an idiot. Everyone should be offended by the pejorative "fag". EVERYONE.

For the record I agree with you taking shots at Catholics unfairly is permissable in our current culture.

But fag is a filthy word and you should know better, even cute asshole insinuations aside.

He’s 69 years old. I don’t think him getting fired ruins his life.
He does need to pay a price.

I believe in forgiveness and redemption for sure. I don't know what standard by which his comments will be judged by his publicly funded employer. But as a prominent and highly compensated person for the university I would think the AD or board of trustees will look very circumspectly at his words. They will have to decide whether he, who comes off as ignorant, is entitled to be such a public face for it going forward.

From his comments, I have no doubt Bob Huggins would never support a gay player on one of his teams. For that, he should be fired.

This is a really tough crowd here behind their keyboards.
A great coach who has guided hundreds of young men, most of them young black men and he makes ONE verbal faux pas and he is body shamed and cast aside as undesirable because, well he's 69 and the old bastard needs to pay with the removal of his defibrillator without anesthesia. Oh, and he should be fired and the holier than thou St. John's alums should lust after their recuits.....because we need a big man.
