Things not looking too good for Bob right now.

West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins directs homophobic slur at Xavier fans during live radio show

Huggins called Xavier fans 'Catholic f--s' in reference to incident while coaching at Cincinnati

West Virginia University head basketball coach Bob Huggins is in trouble after making homophobic slurs toward Xavier University fans during a recent radio appearance.

Huggins appeared on 700WLW’s "Bill Cunningham Show," a Cincinnati-based radio show, on Monday morning, and he was heard calling Xavier fans "all those f--s, those Catholic f--s" who would "throw rubber penises on the floor and then say they didn’t do it."

The full audio clip is below with the comment coming around the 1:15 mark, per Awful Announcing (WARNING: Clip contains homophobic remarks):

The conversation started with the radio show hosts asking if Huggins had any Xavier University players transfer to West Virginia, to which the veteran head coach replied, "Catholics don’t do that."

For context, Xavier is located in Cincinnati and is a Jesuit Catholic university.

Huggins decided to take that comment a step further, going back to his days as coach of the University of Cincinnati Bearcats. The "Crosstown Shootout" is an annual game played between Cincinnati and Xavier, and Huggins referred to a specific incident that occurred.

"I’ll tell you what, any school that can throw rubber penises on the floor and then say they didn’t do it, by God, they can get away with anything," Huggins said.

"It was the Crosstown Shootout. What it was was all those f--s, those Catholic f--s. They were envious they didn’t have one."

Huggins released a statement on the matter.

"Earlier today on a Cincinnati radio program, I was asked about the rivalry between my former employer, the University of Cincinnati, and its crosstown rival, Xavier University. During the conversation, I used a completely insensitive and abhorrent phrase that there is simply no excuse for – and I won't try to make one here. I deeply apologize to the individuals that I have offended, as well as to the Xavier University community, the University of Cincinnati and West Virginia University.

"As I have shared with my players over my 40 years of coaching, there are consequences for our words and actions, and I will fully accept any coming my way. I am ashamed and embarrassed and heartbroken for those I have hurt. I must do better, and I will."

West Virginia University added: "Coach Huggins’ remarks today on a Cincinnati radio show were insensitive, offensive and do not represent our university values. Coach Huggins has since apologized. West Virginia University does not condone the use of such language, and takes such actions very seriously. The situation is under review and will be addressed by the university and its athletics department."

Huggins coached at Cincinnati from 1989 to 2005 before moving on to Kansas State for only the 2006-2007 season. He ended up in West Virginia to lead the Mountaineers on the court from 2007 until present day.

However, after these comments, Huggins’ future at the school, and in college basketball as a whole, is certainly in question.

At first, I was thinking no or minimal punishment, because I read the article, and thought he used a specific F-word, that most of us use every day.

Listen to the audio, disturbing as it is. When I found out (through that) what F-word he actually used, I changed my tune.

I 1000% agree. I too thought he used the fk word, but when it was something else. He has to go and get fired now. IF it was anyone of us we would be fired immediately. Not sure why WV is taking their time on this. But i do know of a coach who never had a losing record that is looking for work! Since Huggy was talking about catholics, Anderson's 40 minutes of hell would fit right in.

It’s not just the homophobic word. It’s the anti catholic rant as well. Clearly not a case of poor word choice or a slip of the tongue. This dude has some deep seated prejudice against Catholics.

It’s a shame because he’s had a hall of fame career and clearly had some deep connections with his kids. I remember when one of his star players went down in the tournament a few years ago with a horrible injury (can’t remember his name) and Huggy was kneeling beside the kid like a parent.

It’s a real shame but agree he should be fired.

He f*cked up not sure what he was thinking with todays world being tissue soft he showed his age I guess. I’m sure he’s got enough money regardless but I hope he keeps his job, people make mistakes and nobody actually got hurt let’s be honest. That man must really hate Xavier that’s what I took from the whole thing.

If he spoke freely using this type of language on a public radio show, it leaves little doubt about how he talks and acts behind the scenes. The apology isn't even necessary because this is how he feels. I personally think he should get fired.

I've always been a fan of his, he's a great coach. But he's also the highest profile employee of a large publicly-funded university. You just can't toss out stuff like that on the air when you're in his position. He should be fired.

It never stops confounding me how many celebrities and others in the public eye make stupid, ridiculous comments, or do stupid things, that get them fired. Don’t these people stop and think before acting? Shame because he is a good coach.

Inappropriate behavior
I mean it is West Virginia so.... contract extension?
I agree! This is not a F*g loving part of the country. Had it been USC, there would be protests in the streets and they would be burning teddy bears in effigy.
I see a three game suspension at the start of the season.
This does eliminate any possible trans men that are in the portal going to West Virginia for basketball but the women's swim team and track team need some infusion of testosterone talent.

Can the mods suspend this guy for three games?

While I wasn't sure at first if he might be fired (along the lines of contrition that McDermott had to do for his ill-advised remarks at a private university), the fact that Higgins is likely one of the highest paid public employees in WVA makes this a far different case imho.

McDermott's case was very different. He used a regrettable word to exhort his players to stick together after a tough loss, telling them to stay on the plantation. I'm guessing he may have been thinking of the phrase "stay on the reservation", which is offensive to Native Americans. I'm pretty sure you can't use "circle the wagons" any more either.

Huggins was purely direct vitriol. "F*g Catholics" who "don't have penises" themselves, threw rubber penises (dildos?) on the court. There's no way that can equate to McDermott using a poor choice of words and not looking to offend anyone. Huggins intent was to defame Xavier Catholic students by calling them "f8gs", very offensive in its own right. It was like Alec Baldwin calling a photographer snapping photos of him a "Fgt c......" Baldwin couldn't explain himself out of that one, and neither can Huggins.

My god, you’re an awful human being…..

Ironically enough they look alike and remind me of each other (Huggins and Baldwin that is)
