The 82-83 team will always be one of my favs, starting the season beating defending champ UNC with MJ, Perkins, and Brad Daugherty. Starting the season 14-0, Big East Tourney champs, before losing to Vern Fleming and the Georgia Bulldogs in the sweet 16 at the Carrier Dome. Only weak link was Bobby Kelly.

Maybe it's just me, but every time I see an interview or any comments from one of our past greats, I expect for a brief inexplicable moment to see them as they were in their prime. Then there they are, looking like they are supposed to look 30 or 40 years after their college glory days. It just is a reminder that our lives fly by so fast, and that no one escapes father time. Billy sitting on the rim on the SI cover can never be taken away.  It is not just a great memory, but sparks a desire and hope to keep cheering our team on to witness greatness once again.

I literally see him sitting on that rim several times a day: I have a framed photo of the cover on my kitchen wall. Was there: one of my happiest moments in 50+ years of being a fan. ... And if you saw Billy play and he's not one of your all-time favorite Redmen, something's wrong with you.

Billy Goodwin is a great Redmen Player . That 82-83 Team with David Russell, Billy , Chris Mullin , Jeff Allen , Ron Stewart ,,Kevin Williams , Etc . Was a great team . Billy played forward even though he was only about 6"4"  . Him sitting on the Rim should be a ever lasting Memory of our Glory Years in College Bssketball !

I was at that UNC game in Springfield and I also taped it on a gigantic VCR.  A few years ago, I mentioned to Kevin Williams that I had it and made a DVD copy of it for him.  He thanks me for it every time I see him.  If you recall, he went coast to coast to tie the game at the buzzer.  And Matt Doherty was also on UNC.  Awesome win.

Billy Goodwin now lives in France.

The years fly by.

Like you, I was at the UNC game in Springfield, all of the Big East tournament games and the loss at the Carrier Dome.

I can still hear the chants of "Albuquerque, Albuquerque" (site of that season's Final 4) that were "chanted" at Alumni Hall late in the season.

I was in the front row underneath the Johnnie's basket, part of a large St. John's Booster Club contingent, for the Big East final vs. Boston College.   A fraternity brother leaned over to us in the waning moments and spread the directive to us: "Storm the court when we win!!!".

We had never done that before or I believe since, but that directive set up the iconic photograph of Goodwin on the rim.  I remember not being sure if MSG security would stop us, and if it was a good idea.  Once 30 or so of us stormed onto the court at least 100 more fans followed, setting up the celebration where Goodwin climbed onto the rim with fans below.

If we hadn't stormed the court, Goodwin likely would not have mounted the rim, because on the ground he was just part of a mob of fans celebrating and hugging players.  Up on the rim, he got a birds eye view, and for a few minutes was at the center of the universe. leading and encouraging a tumultuous Garden party.

In the grainy video of the end if that game I can see a ghost-like 1983 version of myself rushing the court.  I had a sky blue hoodie on and corduroy pants.  The guy who directed us to storm the court also came up with the now familiar "We are St. John's " slogan and very same placards.   A few frat brothers took a road trip to Notre Dame, and were so impressed with their "We are.. Notre Dame" chant that he brought it back and adapted it.

It was one of those moments you never forget exactly where you were.  In my case, about 5 seats to the right of the basket, front row.

Goodwin was rock solid, and favored a 12 to 15 foot jumper from the baseline.  And oh yea, the kid could jump.  Those BC games by the way, were wars.   I always believed that if we had him for Mullin's senior season, perhaps we beat Georgetown.

I was at that Big East Championship game against BC in 82/83 also but my seats were definitely higher than where Beast of the East sat and I did not make it onto the court but was able to enjoy the scene.

Billy is my all-time favorite for many reasons.  Great guy with a good sense o humor.  Always wanted the tough defensive assignment and would kill Nova and others when they would play a triangle and two  (there's a defense you don't see anymore along with a box and one or diamond and one) on Chris Mullin and David Russell).

I was there too.. it was a great Win . BC had quite  a team . Jay Murphy , John Garris , Michael Adams,, Martin Clark, Dom Pressley , Roger McCready , etc . Actually BC had won the regular Season BE title . It was a Saturday afternoon game ,, as I recall , after a Friday Night game Win against Villlanova .  I think the BE then went to a Night game start for the Championship after that season .  Bill Wennington played but , Jeff Allen was the starter .

Those were the days my friend, I thought they'd never end.

I actually told my wife, we'll be back to the Final Four again, no worries.

And we now know who is responsible for the St John's Jinx.
