Billy Donovan

Heard Doug Gottileb mention him today as someone SJU should call. He's from RVC, he's a great college coach who seems to be struggling at the NBA level (on the subtweets I saw an OKC fan say he'd drive him to the airport if we hired him). His team is down 0-2 to Portland in the first round. Not sure if he'd have any interest in this job, or if we could afford to wait until his season with OKC ends, but he'd be just about as good a hiring as we can make.

For this to work SJU would have to have close to an ironclad private agreement that as soon as OKC season is over he would come. Because they would be holding this job open until he left which could be in a week or longer. And that might not be feasible.

Also it would have to be on double secret probation quiet since he is still an active NBA coach.

Frank Isola suggested it as well.

This scenario may have some legs

I'm all for it but we have been down the Donovan road before without success. My recollection is his father has not spoken highly of SJU

No brainer if it's in any way possible. I'm not holding my breath...
Billy Donovan is going to leave the NBA to come to St John's for a rebuilding project? Seems legit.
If they lose one of the next two games in OKC Donovan is out of a job. They didn't sign PG to lose in the first round and waste Westbrook's peak years. I think that's a key part of this discussion. Agree, can't see him quitting for STJ.

Lets go Portland!

Is it really a rebuild for someone like Donovan, though? He'd get top players in here his first full year.
What cost, if available?
Money not a problem. One major donor had a lot of money on table for Pitino and now pushing Billy D. Money not for mid-major hires. SJU picking up the check on those candidates (i.e., Moser)

At least another week until Donovan could be hired so let's wait and see.

For what it’s worth, Billy’s family belongs to a golf club on LI (one I’m sure other posters on here belong to). When he got to OKC it became well known how much he (and players) disliked living there and the quality of life there. They have to live at least an hour away from the arena.

This scenario has some legs. More than last time he was courted coming off NCAA championships with the Gators

Contrary to what many on here think. The longer this search goes on, the better the chance of a home run hire than a mid-major and more Tom Bradley comes out looking like he had it right from the get-go.

Love LJ, but if his departure is because SJU is waiting on a certain someone, in the grand scheme it would be a small price to pay

This should have been the 1st target, before Hurley or Pitino or anyone else.
Pay the guy $10 per yr, buy him a nice UES condo and private jet! National championships would be virtual guarantee.

Apparently he is making $3.9 million. Would he take a salary cut to take on our rebuild?

This is a little crazy. You guys crapped on Mullin for not being able to work hard because he's a millionaire. First off Donovan I think makes $5 million per year at least, and made nearly 4 at Florida. Repole wanted him for SJU, but the reach was a longshot that only a horse gambler would take.

Not coming here unless he is finished with the pros and if he was, could wait to next spring when a plum job opens up and he will be the first guy called.

He'd have to be sold on the ability to turn SJU into nova or close to it. Also, sju has already offered the job to two coaches, its not like this could have been their idea all along.

Would be an absolute best case scenario.
