Biggest Disappointment??

Is this team really any better than it was a few months ago? Nothing changes, only guy that improved(Mussini) has totally run out of steam. Johnson still just chucks and chucks, Mvouika still might as well not come back on D, Felix still travels at least two times a game, AA, Jones? UGH!!! Yakwe trying to run the break? I ask again, what are all those coaches doing?
Other than Sima and Yakwe, in defensive roles, can any of these guys contribute next year, assuming the new players are as good as we hope?

Johnson, Mvouika, Felix and possiblly Jones are gone next year. So no matter how good our incoming class is, they will have to contribute. Ellison, AA and Mussini will also contribute next year. These guys just can't score except an occasionally hot Muss, but the defense and effort is there. That alone will carve out minutes for them.

NONE of the above players are able to create their own shot. They are some of the poorest passers I have ever seen at SJU. Yesterday they actually passed the ball to a Butler player on 5 occasions that resulted in 10 points. I disagree about the defense. No team that plays a decent defense loses by over 30 points as often as these players have. They even managed to lose by that margin to D2 teams!!! Speaking of defense, the 2 super seniors Mouvlika and Johnson have been the biggest disappointments on defense. On the offensive end they are incredibly inconsistent and likely why they were not starters on their former college teams. None of our players have the skills or strength to finish in traffic. That will change next year with Bashir Ahmed, Shamorie Ponds and Lovett but Sima needs to bulk up ASAP. Yakwe has improved his free throw form but needs a lot of work to contribute offensively. At 6'9/6'10 Freudenberg will take a lot of his minutes because he can handle the ball and shoot much better. We need a bull like Rawle Alkins who thrives in traffic in place of weak drive players like Jones and Ellison.
As for this season's biggest disappointment I now have to say it is the sad news that Fun has decided to table his Big East Boards blog in apparent total disgust of the sad state of the program. I sense another Weasles album coming soon entitled Apocalypse Now.

Butler has one of the best offenses in college basketball, they will punish you if you turn it over and miss buckets. I'm not concerned at all about the 30 point loss. Our senior laden squad got smoked by 40 in Nova last year. Its just a reminder that BE teams will prey upon either young or smaller teams.

Also, I don't see RF taking to many minutes from the frontcourt players. He's a straight up wing who can play some straight Shooting guard. He will be better utilized as a backcourt player. Kassoum Yawke Just turned 18 in october, he's already better than Chris Obekpa offensively. The problem is that he recieves the ball way to much above the key, he's going to get exposed. Once we have Lovett penetrating the paint our bigs will have much better looks inside the paint. It's going to be an interesting battle between him, Williams, Owens and Alibegovic for PF minutes.

If Rawle commits he and Shamorie will be playing at the two with Rawle also being used as a SF. RF will take minutes from both Williams and AA. I'm confident Sima will add bulk but the pressure to erase this year from memory is great and except for Sima, Yakwe and Mussini no one else should feel comfortable with getting the minutes doled out freely this year. Personally, I feel one of next year's starters has not even committed yet. ;)

The effort is there, most of the time, but the defense sure isn't. Any pick-heavy offense and the johnnies are finished. The switching just isn't there and the want to work thru the pick isn't really there either.
I question where Mussini fits in if this team is to get better. Everybody has him penciled in as a 2 guard next year, but how is he going to guard athletic 2s, giving up both quickness and a few inches? If anything, hd comes in for some set plays for some long jumpers.

I have to think at least some of Mussini's defensive deficiencies are a result of sheer exhaustion. The guy is putting in a ton of minutes at max effort playing out of position at the 1. He certainly seems to care about the success of the team. Watching him interact with Mullin during FT's and dead balls, he seems keen to learn, too. I have to think he improves all around next year in his natural position and with a year of U.S. collegiate ball under his belt.

Musso gives his best in games but if you notice in the last few games the coaches have been utilizing him more off the ball but it has reaped any benefits to the team. Although he drives to the basket well and with authority, unlike his teammates, his value is supposed to be as a shooter and he has yet to learn to not force his shots. Perhaps he has been playing with Durand Johnson too long. :) Defense is a skill that can be learned over time and he has a long ways to go to become a defensive stopper. That said, he has not been a disappointment. BTW, welcome to redmen.com.

All true. I see a lot of room for improvement, but I think he's smart enough, capable enough, and motivated enough to make the necessary adjustments. I like his attitude. Thanks for the welcome!

Back to the coaching staff, who's the brain that decides 'if they press, we'll have Jones or AA(aka the turnover machine) help bring the ball up'?Btw, Jones has the worst hands I've seen on a player since Abe Keita graced us with his presence, grab the freakin ball!
They played Nova close twice, and there's a reason for it, they don't run an offense they relies on a lot of screens, which gave the Redmen trouble all year, thus the defense was able to hold together better.
Ellison has been better of late, good thing, because Frederico has fallen off a cliff.

Poor Mussini has hit the freshman wall. He's playing flustered and just is outmatched against better talent. He needs to add 20 pounds over the next 8 months. Ironically Musso's crash has helped Ellison who is getting a sophomore year's worth of playing time. Neither will get anywhere near the minutes next year. Thankfully we will not miss as many outside shots next year with Bashir Ahmed, Freudenberg and Ponds. Those 3 are better shooters than Mussini and Ellison. I am hoping the staff surprises us soon with another prime time player.

I'm happy to see Ellison doing well enough with all these minutes. He's a good athlete. Getting all that shooting help is going be amazing. I'm also VERY glad we'll finally have some ballhandlers. Lovett and Ponds look like they'll be able to create off the dribble whenever the offense stagnates. I'm also so tired of seeing these lazy, slow motion passes, but that's a general criticism. Either way, the strength at the point will be a welcome addition.

This group is one of the worst SJU teams in years in terms of passing the ball. Much of that is due to the fact that none of these players ever had to play lead guard but from appearances it is also because we play an abysmal half court offense where players go in the wrong direction or freeze with the ball and just throw it away. Against Nova Durand Johnson actually threw the ball 20 feet away from the nearest player. Mussini actually passed the ball to a Nova player for a layup. With players like Mouvlika, Johnson, Balamou, Jones and yes, Mussini, handling the ball, nothing good is going to happen. Therein the value of Lovett and Ponds next year.
As an aside since I cannot reply on the motherboard after a secret vote conspiracy, much is being said about the recruitment of Rawle Alkins. Personally, I think we already filled his role with Bashir Ahmed who at 6'7, is a taller and better shooter who can play the 2 or the 3. Last year while at CTK he made it crystal that he had no interest in playing at SJU and the former staff backed off. This staff has made a valiant effort but Rawle has an inflated ego imo. He is built like a man at 6'4 but on a Mullin team attitude is VERY important. I think we will focus on a player that can be of immediate help at the 3/4 and if Rawle comes, he needs to come because he wants be a part of something bigger than him because, TRUST ME, Rawle is not a 1 and done!

This post has to get 72 back to the main board. One of the best posts on the site the last month

Glad someone agrees about the passing. It seems like everything these guys do is at 75% speed. I know that's normal for a team as green as this one, but it's hard to watch all the same.

Rawle, Rawle, Rawle. Damned it you do, damned if you don't. It's a win for the program if we attract a recruit as high-flying as him, it's potentially a detriment to our chemistry if he does come. In Chris we trust. If Mullin doesn't think Rawle will be a distraction and will keep his ego in check, then I'm with him. To a lot of posters' points, I don't think the me-first attitude will fly with the new regime.
