Big Recruiting Weekend

Based on Newsday today Kent may be the leader, Diallo mentioned he liked playing with Briscoe, and speaking French to another Kent recruit.

sounds like you are right about KY but sounds like he loves NYC so it would seem to be down to KY/SJU. If we land the Miami kid then Dialo will have a french speaking buddy here too...

OTOH Cal may be thinking more about the NBA himself so I don't think we are out of it especially if the recruits and their handlers are seeing that.
I wonder what Briscoe will be thinking if Cal ends up in the NBA?

I do not think Cal is a big NBA target. He never gets kudos for his in game coaching; what does he bring to the bench in the pro game?

Best recruiting pitch in the world: "Not only do I know what it takes to get to the NBA, and we are going to work every single day on that with you, but I know what it takes to stay there. Come here, and I can't guarantee you'll make the NBA, but I will guarantee that you will never work harder in your life to prepare yourself to get there. I'll make that commitment to you. The rest is up to you."

Is this a Mullin quote?

He had me sold too

If it was, it is an amazing recruiting statement. If not, Beast should be Mullins writer!

Thank you Greg! The pitch was mine.

If you're his speech writer, please leave out the janitor and back door line from future interviews... That one is kinda getting old :p

If it comes down to SJU and KY again, our program is in gear and ready to go to the next level.

All this talk about Diallo speaking in French to the Kentucky recruit. I don't think it makes a stitch of difference but isn't Felix Balamou a French language speaker as well?

Someone previously mentioned how Slice learned a bit of French while he was recruiting him at UK.

It's a nice touch but likely totally insignificant. Big picture.

What would Briscoe decide if he were deciding this week under Coach Mullin v. Coach Calipari? Seems our chances would be better than they were under Coach Lavin.

And I wonder what's really going through the minds of Briscoe and his family even with Calipari staying put? Interesting to know.

We are in gear for sure, but I think it takes 1-2 years in the saddle for Mullin to be able to compete for a top-10 recruit against an elite program like Kentucky. Even that would be a massive accomplishment. When is the last time SJU landed a top-10 recruit? Artest?

I was as anti-Lavin as it gets but it's unfair to say we would have had more of a chance. Lavin did as good of a job as humanly possible recruiting Briscoe, to the point where it may have cost us other recruits. Hard to fight against Calipari no matter who you are.

True but just interesting if we were in his and his family's shoes - I mean this has been a profound change in what SJU is and offers...Chris Mullin = big time in basketball circles as we know

Briscoe is gone. He is recruiting diallo against us. He bought calipari. Can not blame him, but lets get past a 17nyr old kid who went elsewhere

I wish briscoe luck.

In terms of french speaking, or even a cultural connection, I once heard Bishop DiMarzio mention that in the Brooklyn Queens diocese, over 240 languages are spoken. Many kids leave NYC to attend school elsewhere, and feel out of place in towns that don't have the rich cultural diversity that NYC has, and communities that they feel comfortable in. It's a minor consideration, and kids like Diallo are certainly not thinking that their college will be a 4 year stop, so other than a coach's sales pitch, likely doesn't matter.

Funny though how is Diallo plays here, within his own community people will come out of the woodwork to watch him. Felipe Lopez was a proud Dominican, and Dominican New Yorkers followed SJU more closely when he was here. I had season tickets with the Mets for about 5 years, and after the Mets acquired Shawn Green, who refused to play on Yom Kippur because he considered himself a role model for Jewish kids, you'd see a lot of Orthodox kids at Mets game. Again, it's not a reason for Diallo to come to SJU, but if he does, New Yorkers with the same cultural identity will embrace and celebrate him.
