Big Matt on 4 Quarters

Very exciting to hear him talk about the future. Chris seems like a traditional basketball guy given the era he played in college and how long he has been around the NBA game. Matt is a great complement in that he has a more modern take and a very creative approach to recruiting that has been lacking around here for far too long. When asked about his preference for building and if he'd rather have high school kids or transfers, Matt didn't give the typical answer of high school players as the core that you'd expect. He said he favored a healthy dose of transfers to keep the median age higher and provide experience. He also talked about how proud he was that they were so successful with the transfer game Iowa St. He thought they were the best in the country.

Also great to hear that Matt is an avid Mets fan and that both Mullin and Slice are Mets fans as well. It could be a good relationship for SJU and the Mets so close in proximity.

Great interview - very impressed with Matt A.

One question - he said he could only talk about Mvouika and Williams
The Red Storm web site says that Owens has "signed" as well
What about Sima, Johnson and Ellison?
My assumption is that they are not yet signed, sealed and delivered
Any reason to be concerned about any of the "unsigned" guys?

Paultz posted that Ellison will sign tomorrow and that Sima will sign soon. I'm sure Johnson will sign any day as well. It takes time to get the paperwork created, sent, and returned in his case (being in Pittsburgh). Ellison could just stop by the campus.

Sima is my only concern, because he transferred schools mid-year in December. He also started school abroad and that presents a hurdle itself.

As for Owens being left out, I think Matt was just speaking to next season.

Ellison signs tomorrow. It sounds like the other two are works in progress. I don't anticipate problems with Johnson. Yesterday Zags, I believe, noted staff is confident about Sima. We'll see.

Maybe we should start a poll? Which would you rather have, high school kids or transfers? I personally would rather have high school kids.

Billy Goodwin, The Whopper, Walter Berry, Ron Rowan, Lamont Middleton , Reggie Carter , John Hempel , Jeff Allen and the list goes on of players who transferred in and were key components of very good teams.
A good mix of transfers can be very beneficial to the program.

Sima and Johnson were seen together on campus Sunday.

Matt coming on board so rapidly gives credence to the notion that before Mullin was offered the job, he had some discussions with the school should a vacancy occur. Like Mullin, I get the feeling that Matt is here for the very long haul and won't be jumping ship for the next career opportunity. Grabbing Matt was an absolute steal, and gives you an idea that Mullin was indeed paying close attention to the college game while working in the NBA.

In terms of Mets allegiance, that's awesome. We should arrange a redmen.com trip to Citifield and invite the coaching staff.

Of course Mullin would be a Mets fan. Coming from Flatbush, many if not most Dodger fans quickly embraced the Mets when they entered the league just a few years after the Dodgers departed. Back in the 60s, when the Giants came to town, the upper deck, which was general admission then with no reserved seating was converted to reserved seating when the Giants and Dodgers came to town, since so many of their fans filled the stadium.

Mike Moses, who was third-team all-big east the year we made the Final Four (even if he did play over Mark Jackson - I wasn't really around then, so I can't say if it was right or wrong).

Yeah, maybe the Wilponzies can hit up Gempeshaw for a loan.
