Big man for 2019-20
From his offensive highlights, Sears was a banger at Juco with a low post game. Have no idea if he can do that against D1 comp, but it’s clear it’s a big part of his game.
He did a year of D1 before transfering. Not sure how those numbers translate to Big East if he didn't improve significantly in his juco year.

I can't shake the feeling that Josh Roberts is going to be our first big in awhile to exceed expectations. I don't think he'll be making an All Conference team or anything but from the little we've seen of him he's really athletic, plays VERY hard and doesn't try to be anything other than what he is. As long as he's a good listener and has the IQ to play within a system I bet he works out well for us and sees plenty of minutes.

I agree and share your feeling. Here’s hoping.

Was there a decision I missed on Ian Steere's request for a waiver to play in the first semester or is this still an open issue?

Agree with this for the most part. As I recall, expectation for Josh was very good 4 year player who would take a year or two to develop. I expect him to contribute a lot this year, but still worry a bit about depth up front until Steere is eligible. I don't want to see Heron having to defend 4s again as it will inevitably get him in foul trouble, which we can afford even less this year. Unless LJ has gotten a lot stronger since last year, it will be Heron who is asked to defend a big when Heron, LJ, Wright & either Williams or one of the PGs are playing together. I could be off, but that's how I see it.

I agree with all that NC. I also would feel much more comfortable if Steere were eligible. I don't mind Mustapha playing the 4 for stretches when it makes sense (mismatches or what not) but agree it should not be out of necessity. As you point out foul trouble would be a big problem which we can't afford with him. Also Mustpaha needs to get the "star treatment" this year and by that I mean we're going to be dependent on him to carry a good portion of the offensive load so it seems wise to give him a break on the other side of the ball. And just to be clear I don't mean he shouldn't play hard on defense (I don't get the sense Anderson is the type to allow that) Just saying it'd be nice if he didn't have to spend half the game wrestling guys who outweigh him by 40 lbs. The body feels that.

Open, but ...
I assume that means, for some reason, it doesn't seem likely. Are there more specifics? or just the felling you're getting from people close to it? Thx.

It’s hard to imagine he has much of a case. It isn’t injury or hardship related.

I'm not sure what the rules say but he played 5 minutes in one game and without that he would have been a sit out transfer and would have been eligible at the start of this season.

He played ergo he has to sit a full year. Waiver is more to get the freshman eligibility back.

I'm clearly biased, but the NCAA should just make him sit the first game he's eligible for, and call him a freshman.

Unfortunately, I think he needs a sob story to pull that off, and pretty sure there wasn't one documented.

First part should say "He ENROLLED" that is why he has to sit a year. The playing or not playing has zero to do with sitting. That is the point even if he had not played a minute he would have to sit a year. The sit rule simply says if you transfer you need to establish a full year of residency at your new school before you can play. Period. Has nothing to do with whether you actually played 1 minute or not at your previous school.

Let me explain one more time with a slightly different example, LOL. Let's say it is mid-October 2018 and Ian Steere decides he wants to transfer. He has not played 1 minute because they have not even played any games. He stays enrolled at NC St for rest of semester and decides to transfer to SJU and enroll at SJU in January of 2019. Meaning everything is the same EXCEPT he did not play in any game. What's different? From a transfer perspective NOTHING. He has to sit a year, period. The difference is by not playing he can use last year as his redshirt year and start off at SJU in mid-December as a REDSHIRT FRESHMAN. This is the difference. By playing 5 minutes in a game last year unless he gets a waiver he is a true SOPHOMORE this year with 3 years of playing eligibility as opposed a redshirt frosh with 4 years of eligibilty.

It seems the Steere situation is a one off, at least I have never heard of anything like this before. Don't really know what to expect but if I had to guess he sits out to January and gets the year back. I think the extra year may turn out to be irrelevant to us because he seems to have a serious case of the rolling stones. To expect him here for four years seems a stretch. Nothing more than a completely uninformed opinion though.

NCAA rules are always fair and easily understood. NOT!

Sid “Vicious” Wilson had to sit but because he never played he stayed a freshman.

Would he ONLY have 2.5 years left if he sits out till January?

As I recall, Matt Brust left Carolina after 1 semester. He arrived in Dec and then sat out 18 months to have 3 full years of eligibility. If Louie played him after the one full year of residency, he only had 2.5 years left.

I think the situation with Ian Steere has been described very well by multiple posters. However, since there is still some discussion, I'll take a crack at it......

If no appeal were filed:
Steere would become eligible to play after this year's first semester (think late December). At that time, he would play his sophomore year.

If an appeal is filed:
It would likely be a petition to reclaim his freshmen status. He would still not be eligible until late December. But, if the appeal were successful, he would then play his freshmen year.

*Under the current transfer rules, considering there have been no personal hardships reported, no one believes Steere or St. John's would be chasing first semester eligibility.

The possibility of reclaiming his freshman year is certainly good reason to pursue the waiver
Under the circumstances, he should get that year back IMHO

For those of you in the know, are we going to fill this last scholarship with a big or no? Thanks.
