Big man for 2019-20

Sears is listed at 6'7. In a recent team photo he looks like he could actually be a little taller than that but regardless we will be undersized again (ugh!) and if we won't see Steere until January that is even smaller. Won't be as bad as last season with our guards defending 7 footers and other huge guys but will still be frustrating every time we are stuck in half court play. I sure hope Sears' knee won't be an issue. A one year, true big man would be useful for this season and an injury or two away from Heron playing spots at the 4/5. I don't want to see that...

Our strength is typically undersized teams that don't shoot well, don't take care of the ball, and get beat off the dribble on defense. The downside is we don't come up big in crunch time.

Grabbing a big man for the sake of grabbing one doesn't help us at all. It's already July, so who would we actually be able to add who wouldn't be a stiff? I really appreciate Sears for coming aboard, but I really don't think he gives us much of what shows up in a box score. So unless we find a guy who is better than that, there's no point in wasting a scholarship.

I'm eager to see what JR can do.

So seeing the brace on Sears knee doesn't make you a bit anxious even after last season with Keita? I think adding a real big even if he plays 3 minutes per game is a good idea. Curtis Johnson could barely run the floor but he was a spark off the bench and changed the flow of more than one game.

I think it makes more sense to have LJ at PF with Wright at SF than it does to have LJ at SF and a garbage player at PF if we are running short on bodies. I'd even put Caraher there before digging through the big man scrap heap in July. I haven't given up on Earlington year either. But if someone wants to direct me toward a list of fifth-year bigs still in transfer pool I'd take a look and admit if my opinion changes. I just don't want to be stuck with a two-year commitment.

They targeted several beefy interior guys, but sometimes there are issues precluding guys joining team.

No way I want to see either LJ or Mustapha trying to guard a power forward. I don't think we need a big who will do anything but rebound and guard the other team's big(s) and would be happy if we used last scholarship to sign a big who can play 8-10 meaningful minutes next year to supplement minutes of Steere, Sears & Roberts. If we can't find one I agree we save the schollie, but also think we'll miss having that extra big, particularly on defensive end. Maybe it's just too late to find one, if so we'll have to make do. Certainly don't fault staff, as they've done a good job filling out the roster with such a late start. Just my two cents..

For the conference portion of the schedule we will have Steere, Roberts and Sears. Figgy is 6'7 and Caraher is 6'6. I'm not sure there is a 6'10 player materializing to be serviceable but Keita was basically useless most of the season forcing us to play small ball. Unlike the neophyte coaching staff of last season this staff may use Steere and Roberts more efficiently with Sears at the 4 or 5 as needed. The sight of the knee brace doesn't worry me and it is a wise precautionary move to both build up his confidence and knee stability. I understand the summer workouts have been intense and he has held up fine. Besides, our most important player may be a 5'9 point guard.;)

Earlington is strong but he is/wants to be a guard and he is not explosive or athletic enough to be a presence in the paint defensively like Roberts for example who makes up for his slightness with that athleticism. ME with a lot more seasoning, could maybe become a good defender like Ty Grant who relied upon strength and smarts.

Paultz, does that mean that they are waiting to see if guys like Devale Johnson or Pacheco pass and become eligible? Do you think they have someone lined up and are just waiting on eligibility?

That's my big concern -- that a big available this late would probably be a horrendous rebounder. I suppose there could be a useful big kid who still needs test scores or summer school to be eligible, though.

Whether anyone wants to consider them PFs or not figgy/heron are going to get minutes at the 4. I don’t see any which way possible that 3 of LJ, Heron, Wright, Williams don’t see time together. Maybe some of that comes with them 1-3, but a lot will be 2-4. I am not so much worried about our size and I think physically we’ll hold our own much better but there is a lot to be determined on the offensive end. I write all that to say that I don’t think we need a big guy but we are one injury away from needing a big guy. So hopefully we luck out an find a worthy big guy.

From his offensive highlights, Sears was a banger at Juco with a low post game. Have no idea if he can do that against D1 comp, but it’s clear it’s a big part of his game.

Johnson committed to Rhode Island & not sure on Pacheco, but assume it would have happened by now if feasible.

Can't forget the Notre Dame game. He scared the bejesus out of them.
