Big East Predictions

Third or fourth in BE regular season

Make semis in BE Tourney

Win a game & possibly 2, depending on draw, in Big Dance.

Certainly hope Johnnies do even better.

I think it’s hard for all of us, as we are perennial losers. I’d pick us second because Nova deserves the benefit of the doubt. This is still the first year we are this talented all around and deep though. We have bench players to field two solid teams, even if some of our bench isn’t all that experienced. By mid-season they’ll be ready to grind. I think we should be second. We had to prove it now, but I think we have enough to make a run of this.

Our second 5 may well be good bench players but to say they would themselves be a solid team in the BE? They wouldn't come close to winning one conference game.

No, not another Big East team, just a relatively talented second 5 coming off the bench compared to what we are used to. We are barely used to having a full starting 5, is all I meant.

It's up to the fates. Was just having fun, picking us to win the BE and go far in the Dance, but I would be surprised if St. John's doesn't beat the pre-season predictions of Big East coaches, that did not calibrate Heron's, or Figueroa's potential impact.
Can't wait for the games to begin!

On the other hand ...

Still concerned about the ability of this coaching staff to get the most out this team:
1) Villanova
2) Marquette
3) Providence
4) Butler
5) Xavier
6) St. John's
7) Seton Hall
8) Creighton
9) Georgetown
10) De Paul

Nova
SJU
Prov
Marquette
Butleru
Seton hall
Xavier
Gtown
DePaul
creighton

The bottom half of the league is really interesting. Even in down years it’s tough to see the creightons and Xaviers really throwing up duds. Makes it that much harder for DePaul and gtown to move up the standings (us too really). But out of those four teams I think that gtown has the best player in Govan and I think DePaul has the best duo in Eli Cain and Max Straus. On talent alone I don’t think they should finish 9th and 10th.

For SJU to come in 4th, translates into it not being a down year for Big East.
I expect that we will live up to the hype.

Andy is right about one thing this Big East May actually be better than last year’s Big East.

Last year the Big East was top heavy, this year 1-10 are good quality teams.

But I think he’s wrong about us being fifth. I know we can finish way higher than that.

A disappointing prediction, cursed by being irrelevant for so long.
Many pundits base the future on the past.
I hope and think, Andy Katz is wrong, and we finish 1st - 3rd, make the Dance, and win a couple games there.
Let's do it.

SJU grad 13, I agree with you that BE will be much more balanced 1-10 this year; also agree that picking Johnnies 5th is a stretch; just don't see any way we finish behind Butler. Finally, while I can see Marquette finishing as high as 2nd in regular season (I picked them 3rd) I don't see them as a threat to go deep in NCAA tournament. I see us as more of a threat there, along with Nova. But, as we often say, time will tell.

I don't want to make a list but here's my hot take: Villanova will finish third in the Big East this season.
Our Time Has Come!
im gonna keep saying this till I look like an idiot. We are going to flat out wreck people this year

First lest look at the conference vs Lavins first year ? Is it safe to assume the old big east was better ?

Look at the talent on this team ranking wise vs what he had. Now keep in mind I liked him a lot but lets be honest this team on paper other than size destroys his first team ranking wise.

This is our year !!!! Payback time !!! I just wish we had teams to pay back like Uconn msg etc but we are going to f people up

That being said I think we will be much better at end of year than beginning. I'm only expecting 1 loss before Seton Hall but if its 2 I'm not going nuts and if its closer games than expected I'm not going nuts.

At the end of the season we will be playing the best in conference

A loss before the Hall would surprise me, given the need for Ponds, Heron, Simon, and Clark to dominate, playing for their imminent futures, but you never know.
That said, I think we'll wreak havoc when it counts in the nitty-gritty.

Please don’t get me wrong, I’m very bullish about this team, but just want to respond to throb comparison with Lavin’s first team. While I think this team has more natural talent, that team employed Coach Dunlap’s “Amoeba Defense.” It really appeared that we would have 6 players on the floor playing against a 5 man team. It was that defense, along with Buckets’ magical shots (and DJ being a top glue guy), that made that team special. Hopefully, with the depth this year, this team will employ a suffocating defensive scheme.

Lavin's first team was not his most talented, but it was his most experienced. And FWIW I take DJ over anyone on this team every day of the week and twice on Sunday, but I digress. This team is not necessarily Mullin's most experienced. The transfer game has led to the team having a lot of "upperclassmen"with less experience as a team every year. Returning just 3 or 4 contributors (plus Amar) a year continues to be a part of the problem. And neither coach exhibited a great understanding of how to get the most consistency out of their teams with any semblance of a structured offense.

That said, I agree with your assertion that the league is not as strong as it was in 2011 when there were 5 teams in the post season top 20 for sure. I just don't see this team being complete enough to "wreck" all the opponents on their schedule, even if the schedule is not that strong. I think they'll be good, and run the 150+ teams out of the building, hopefully, but from what I've seen of the way the staff runs this team they will continue to struggle against well coached teams with some size on nights that they don't shoot the lights out from 3. And I don't see this as a team that is going to shoot the lights out from 3.

If they have more than 22 wins going into the BET I will be pleasantly surprised, not shocked but surprised. 11 OOC wins, 11 BEC wins.
