From Zach:
Big East Media Day is over. Some thoughts and news.
- Rick Pitino felt St. John's executed at a four or a five in the Rutgers exhibition. Wasn't happy with the second half performance, but felt effort was there, which he said is the most important thing right now.
- RJ Luis (left hand) is getting X-Rays tomorrow and the hope is two weeks out from returning to practice. On schedule to return for Charleston Classic. Cruz Davis (left hand) is a week ahead of Luis and is on track to be available for the opener.
- Ed Cooley called Pitino the greatest coach in college basketball history. High praise.
Jordan Dingle is still out. He made the watch list for the Jerry West Award given to nation's top shooting guard. Pitino said Dingle is unlikely to play in exhibition against Pace, partly because he wants to see the younger guys play.
- Val Ackerman told me Gavitt Games will not happen next year. There was an agreement in principle, but that's out. Big East has had talks with Gonzaga about joining league, but it seems like the Zags are headed in another direction. Would only add a real difference-maker to the league like Gonzaga.
Daniss Jenkins was thrilled to be part of media day. Something he has never really been a part of before. Said he has always been an "underdog.”
- Joel Soriano said he wants to go out a winner, not just for himself, but the fans who spend their hard-earned money to attend games and have not gotten much in return in recent years. Soriano was happy with first team selection, but is goal is to have that honor at the end of the year.
