Big East and the NBA

Only 2 players drafted. Dougie McD and Semaj Christon.. As usual loaded with foreign players no one ever heard of.
NBA hierarchy is pushing for more foreign players to expand the brand globally. Spurs foreign roster just confirms it.
NBA dream for many college players is just that.

at the end of the day if you are good enough you will be drafted whether you are foreign, US born or from Mars. The bottom line for the NBA is to field the best players and make the most money. This was a deep draft and that is one reason why some underclassmen should never have opted to go into the draft. Someone like Jakarr could have used one more year and he would have improved and been in a draft that wasnt that deep. Blame their "advisors".

Reason the NBA loves the Euro players is because they are better fundamentally than American players. When the older American coaches went over to Europe they taught the game basics. The European coaches are still teaching the game that way. The American system does not emphasize a fundamentally sound game. You can tell by watching high school and college games the beauty of the game has passed us by and has led to a break down in the quality of basketball players the country is producing IMO

Agree 100% but would add that some foreign players are drafted because they can be "stashed" outside the NBA and not count immediately against the cap.

Allowing NBA players to compete in the Olympics a quarter century ago did a lot to invigorate basketball as a world wide game.

Charles Barkley, in his book says that many American players disrespect Europeans because they can't jump through the roof, or be lightning fast. Barkley correctly says that basketball rewards many talents, and European players overall play a better team game, shoot, pass and protect the ball better - as you indicate

Exactly, some have contracts and stay in Europe a couple of years before moving to the U.S.

Not to mention they want to win. Correct me if I am wrong but didn't the Spurs win the NBA Championship?

Sean Kilpatrick is only the second 1st team Associated Press All American to go undrafted
The other - another former Big East player - Scotty Reynolds
I thought C.J. Fair might have had a shot at going in the second round
Not much love shown for the Big East Conference this year

There are incredible numbers of BB players who are great athletes but, when they get to the highest levels, the NBA, their athleticism isn't enough. Sampson was one of those players as were a lot of the surprised undrafted players , i.e CJ Fair. Lavin could use a primer refresher course on relying just on athletes.. See how far its gotten him. 5th or 6th place in the BE MOSTLY.

THERE is a lot more to this game of BB than slam dunks and high flying acrobatics. Being able to shoot, rebound, defense and shoot foul shots are important. So many of these kids do not get the message that it is important to make a free throw, not just take the ball out of bounds, like in the playground. i recall never shooting free throws in pick up games . its a shame.

He's been the coach for 4 seasons (physically, 3 seasons), and they've finished in 3rd place on two separate occasions. That doesn't particularly sound like "mostly," per my calculation. Someone help me out, as I'm not a mathematician or accounting major.

CJ Fair is far from just an athlete, unfair to lump him in to that category IMO. Do agree regarding Sampson though.

Depends on what your benchmark is. Last season we finished in a tie for 3rd place. But the other 2 teams we tied with made the tournament, while we did not. If your benchmark is making the NCAA Tournament, then four other teams in the Big East finished ahead of us.

It (the conversation) doesn't have anything to do with a benchmark. It has to do with what he exactly said. What you're saying is irrelevant to the conversation.

He said, we "mostly" finished in 5th or 6th place. That isn't true. He had holes in his quote, and I was just stating facts. Just that simple.

I was surprised to see Fair go undrafted. He's a streaky player, but I feel like given the right coach he could develop into a solid role player in the league.

NBA criteria is a lot different than ours in assessing a College player's potential.. Fair had a great early season for the Orange but, with the emergence of Ennis, seemed to tail off late.

Still, don't know why he wasn't drafted.. Much better player than Jakarr, in my opinion.

And, btw , who cares if we finish 5th or tied for 3rd or whatever, if we don't make the NCAA. It's all mediocre without that bid. And, who can forget Robert Morris, even in the off season. It all counts on Lavin's and team's resume. It's in the books for all time.

Fair is like too many other players these days that think they can be a star by just being able to shoot three pointers and throwing down dunks. It's the ability to do the stuff inbetween that gives a player the ability to be a star--the midrange, the ability to get to the rim off the bounce, the ability to drive, draw and dish, etc. Fair could only get to the tin consistently on reckless closeouts or poor defense.

That written, I am kind of shocked he wasn't selected late. He is much more pro ready than Sampson--he was as a soph as well. He can hit the corner three consistently and he is athletic enough vertically to contribute on the boards and be an average defender. He is not a super athlete, though. People need to understand that just because a kid can jump doesn't mean he is a great athlete. Fair has poor to average lateral quickness for the NBA three spot--average at best. That will make things tough for him on defense. Offensively, that lack of quickness is even more glaring because he doesn't have the skill off the dribble to compensate.

Ummmmm..... No! Per usual, you were wrong.

I'm assuming that was a typo, clearly CJ Fair wasn't a sophomore (unless you are referring to 2 years ago)

Just a few undrafted players that Jordan and Obekpa should take note of.........

Bryce Cotton
C.J. Fair
Sean Kilpatrick
James McAdoo
Roscoe Smith
LaQuinton Ross
DeAndre Kane
Patric Young
Melvin Ejim

Ejim is the guy that jumps out to me. He was an extreme talent. Dropped 42 in a game this year. I would've taken him before I took Jeremai Grant.
