Bethune Cookman, Fri. Nov. 11, 9pm-YES/570AM

For game number one of a new, young team I don't need a big blowout. I do need a W against a team the level of Bethune Cookman but any win will do. Beyond that all I want to see is good ball movement on offense and great effort on defense. Shooting will come and go, stat lines will be impressive one game and not impressive the next. I just want a team that consistently shares the ball and plays defense from game one through whenever the season ends. As long as there is talent (which we all believe there now is a much higher level of) wins will come.

That's exactly how I feel. I don't need a blowout and I don't care if it's a close game. Just want to see the potential and get a W

Goes without saying with a 1-17 record in conference last year, but it'll be nice to hopefully get in the win column Friday night!

Important to get the first two in the win column without incident as the next four are brutal, @ Minny and Battle 4 Atlantis. Would be very pleased if we came out of those 4 with a split and were at 4-2 overall heading into a part of the OOC schedule where we can do some damage.

4-2 maybe a shade optimistic, but think we can get one of Minny or 2nd Round B4A game, especially if that game is VCU. Presuming a loss to MSU and a winnable 3rd Round B4A game, we could get there. First two set the whole thing up though, really can't afford a slip in either and need momentum heading into Minny.

Yep! The hope is to win those first two without a hitch. The next few games will be tough and I believe all away from home. It's a grueling schedule but I think these guys will be up for the challenge and competitive in each tilt.

Seems like their clear top guy is Potts, a 5'10" redshirt senior and pre-season first team all conference. 9th in the country in minutes last year, lead the conference in assists, and lead the team in scoring. Super high volume (attempted 8 3s per game despite 32.1%!) and was light on efficiency from both 3 and overall. Would not be surprised if he is streaky which is the kind of guy that hurt us last year especially in OOC schedule. Imagine this will be a healthy dose of Lovett.

After him they lost their second and third leading scorers from last year. Not sure obviously who they have coming up but seems like if we take Potts away we should be in decent shape.

The road to relevancy begins Friday night. The first step to forgetting last year’s eight-win nightmare starts now, the hope an upgraded roster translates into results that will be as different as last season was disappointing.

“We’re very hungry,” forward Bashir Ahmed, one of several key newcomers, said before Friday’s opener in Queens against Bethune-Cookman. “We’ve been working hard for this moment, and that moment is finally here.”

As Chris Mullin begins his second campaign coaching his alma mater, the Hall of Fame player has an improved roster to work with, particularly on the perimeter, where the Johnnies lacked the necessary firepower to compete on most nights in the Big East.

Mullin wasn’t tipping his hand about Friday’s starting lineup, but freshman Marcus LoVett Jr. — the true point guard that was missing from the roster last year — and Ahmed, a junior college transfer from The Bronx, likely will be in it. Freshman Shamorie Ponds of Brooklyn, German wing Richard Freudenberg, and Tennessee transfer Tariq Owens are also expected to be significant contributors, aiding the returning core of Federico Mussini, Amar Alibegovic, Kassoum Yakwe, Malik Ellison, Darien Williams and Yankuba Sima.

“We’re really trying to mix and match,” Mullin said. “We have 10 guys I think can contribute.”

St. John’s holdovers like to talk about last year’s dismal eight-win campaign as much as football coaches want to discuss injuries. But the returning Red Storm players also know there is only way for that forgettable campaign to be erased — by reversing those ugly results — and there was some value to it.

“We went through a lot of adversity. As a player, nobody wants to be a loser,” said Ellison, a sophomore guard. “Last year we lost a lot games, but we kept fighting, and that was the most important thing that we showed.

“I feel like all of that adversity we went through last year will show on the court.”

Inside the locker room, the expectations have been heightened, though no one was willing to put a number on the amount of wins needed to deem this year a success. Mullin has attempted to temper those high hopes, pointing to the inexperience of Ponds, Freudenberg, Ahmed and LoVett Jr., none of whom has logged a minute of Division I basketball. And aside from the exhibition game against Baruch and scrimmage against Rhode Island, this group has never played together in an actual game.

However, the Red Storm feel they are further along than other new group, because so many of them were around this summer for voluntary workouts getting to know each other.

“We built great chemistry together, on and off the court,” Ellison said. “We’re all extremely confident for the season.”

Everybody knows about last year, even the newcomers who weren’t in the program a year ago. Before the Baruch exhibition, the returning players reminded everyone of how poorly the previous season started, with a blowout loss to Division II St. Thomas Aquinas. While St. John’s is expected to be better, there is still that nasty taste in their mouths.

“We’re just all ready,” Ahmed said, “to go out there and perform.”

11 players on the team and Coach says I believe we have 10 players who can contribute. AA or DW? I would have to think DW as he has battled a lot of injuries.
Best of luck to the staff and returning players as we embark upon a new season. I for one would love to see 10 players each get decent pt this season until we know who stands out.
