(BET) (POST GAME) Villanova, Thur., Mar. 10, 7p, FS-1

I think Champy was worn out, having played 30 minutes the day before. He played the 2nd most minutes in the conference play this season.

And yeah this was such a rough season for Champagnie. Great player, fantastic kid whose career I will closely follow but that airball…man. We literally got a wide open shot to most likely ice the game and it’s in the hands of the guy we want taking the shot and he just choked. I hope that comes across as just a sad observation of what we just watched rather than an unfair, mean critique of a college athlete. I agree that for all of his wonderful qualities, closing & showing up in big games were not his thing. Great representative for the program. One of the best reps maybe. Unfortunate ending to his college career.

He didn't choke; he missed a shot. Given what he meant to this team -- including in last night's game -- I find labeling him a choker offensive.

Edit: QueensBall, I know that sounds a bit harsh given the good things you have to say about him -- and I usually agree with your posts -- but I guess I'm still in a pissy mood today, and the "choke" remark didn't sit well -- nor do I think it was merited.

What strikes me about Nova , UCOnn , Creighton  is that they have 3-4 guys among their Starters who can drain the J .  We had to rely on Coburn , Smith , who weren’t part of the starting lineup most nights to get our higher percentage shooters  in to the game .  Posh isn’t a Shooter , Mathis isn’t and Wheeler was inconsistent or , invisible .  It was a weakness that you can’t sustain in the BE .  And , I was surprise to learn tonight that Creighton was the Best Defensive Team in the BE .

Fair enough. I agree it reads as harsh upon rereading. Written while still swallowing the bitterness of that loss probably. I’ll edit that out like a true gentleman.

And yet, down one last night (but clearly we're only going to get a three), and down 3 vs. Creighton, Coburn was not in for the final possession either time.  Apparently, Wusu's defense warrented his being in for those situations.

Very classy of you. And yes, we're all still recuperating from last night.

And 38 last night. And you see the toll it'd taken by his body language.

If you don’t have guys who can bang down shots you can’t win at a high level. Wusu is not a shooter either. Even if Smith and Coburn aren’t as good defensively as Mathis and Wusu their ability to shoot the ball and score would more than make up for for their minor deficiencies on the defensive end. Watch a team like Nova , they have no post presence whatsoever but their ability to shoot the ball more than makes up for that deficiency. Look at Wisconsin. Other than Johnny Davis Wisconsin lacks elite athleticism, but their ability to bang down shots more than makes up for that deficiency. When a team can score the ball at a high level it allows them to overcome any deficiencies that they might have and mitigate a good amount of their mistakes most of the time. When you have team like us with three guards who can’t shoot it just exacerbates our deficiencies and magnifies our mistakes. Villanova makes mistakes. When they do, their opponents might get a nice breakout and get a couple fast break points and then they come down court and drain a three. They make a mistake and give up two and then they bang down a three and negate the mistake, they’re a +1 on the exchange. We are very rarely able to do that. Teams that can bang down shots do it all the time.

Postgame press conference

Our guys really left it all on the court.

Absolutely brutal to watch that. Just watched video of Naomi Osaka after getting heckled by 1 fan at Indian Hills and how much it affected her and then seeing these kids who are still in college. A good reminder for all of us that at the end of the day they are just kids. I certainly took that last game too seriously. Champ might not have made the NCAA but he's still a Champ in my book

Thanks for posting.  For anyone that wonders whether the team cares as much as the fans.....I suggest watching this.

Just watched recorded version and found myself just as anxious and animated as I was in person. Felt same gut punch. As many have already said, so many what-ifs that could have changed the result.

one thing I took away is that, going forward, we need to identify the guys that should NOT be guarded on the perimeter (almost as important as identifying those that should be guarded). Guys like Samuels should rarely be guarded and we should laugh when he shot fakes.

also, assuming we bring back everyone that can come back (and add a shooter or 2) we can be good. I questioned Wheeler prior to his epiphany but really impressed with his ability and think he can be a leader. He strikes me as a great teammate.
