Best Lobster Rolls in Maine

and the first Pilgrims had so much lobster that it became food for only the poor. My grandfather told me that when he was a kid in NY (Queens was largely farm country at the time) lobster was considered garbage fish.

I believe that Native Americans and Pilgrims used them for fertilizer for crops.

ouch

back when I was in college a good friend of mine would work summers on his uncles lobster boat in long island sound ( back 88-92 ). Was real hard work. With warming waters brown tides etc that business is completely gone and like the article mentioned previously lobsters have all gone north to cooler waters.

To think I freaking love lobsters and haven't been to Maine yet. Will definitely be taking a trip up that way to do some lobster roll research and go hang with MCNPA up in New Hampshire

Sad to hear that. I went out on my uncle's little boat several times in the 80s from Northport. We always got a good haul. Alternatively we'd throw a rock on the sand to see where the Steamers were and dig em up. Good times. Too bad I was too young to fully appreciate it.
I love steamers. I dont know if those have been affected. Oysters were affected a while ago ( those same years in college another friend of mine worked oysters at some oyster farm place in oyster bay I think called flowers ) but it seems long island oysters now are doing fairly well but I'm not sure what part of long island they are coming from. But lobster business dead for sure

In huntington the old school fisherman families who all keep their boats out in the harbor are all dying off it seems

Another friend of mine who is big time fisherman ( kind of like a 2nd job for him but he just loves fishing and catches so many he would sell to restaurants ) became a party boat captain at night because more money in it and less financial risk

There is (was) a company in East Marion formed by 4 or 5 retired executives with lots of time on their hands that farm(ed) oysters out of Oysterpond in East Marion. I think they did pretty well.

The market that gets shellacked by by occasional red or brown algae is the bay scallop market, which is a fraction of what it once was. When available they are pretty expensive, north of $25 a pound.

Steamers are great. Just had some in Greenport last weekend. (Greenport has become quite a great destination for North Forkers)

Lobster is plentiful now, but prices still propped up by China's hunger for it. They buy a ton of it from Maine. I too love steamers and they have a ton of em here in nh/ Maine etc. I will say, my friend from LI says steamers taste a lot different up here. He says they're sweeter and cleaner tasting. I wouldn't doubt it, as the waters are much colder and very different.

The drug den comment by Trump is way off. There is certainly a problem here but it's everywhere. Long Island has a very big problem as well. look at the deaths from OD in both Nassau and suffolk. It's a scourge that will continue to be a problem for the immediate future.

And mike, any time you wanna come up, let me know. Lots of seafood and craft beer here.

Some of those pictured including Luke's in NY show the part of the lobster in the extremities of the claw. This is the only part of the lobster I and everyone I know who eats lobster do not eat. They lose points in my book as I would consider that filler. Interested in how others feel.

Luke's is definitely 9 claw material. That one in point pleasant looks like crap. Neptune is pretty good. Very solid 8ish claw rating. The others I haven't tried

I spend much of my time at the Jersey shore and the one in Point Pleasant is AWFUL. Ton of mayo.. the lobster is grounded up. No chunks. Its almost like it comes from a can at Costco.

Just saw this list of best sandwiches on Food & Wine. Highest rated lobster roll (of course I thought of Maher immediately) was Neptune at #8 overall.
