Best Beer

were you the one that said #40 was real good too ? Pliny The Elder ?

I don't know if it was me but I do know that it has won a ton of awards and voted best beer in American a bunch of times I think it also won best in the world one year.

I enjoy it but not my personal favorite. Then again I only like the big hoppy IPAs occasionally unlike most people these days. I do like the bitter and sour and would probably go for a Guinness over an IPA most of the time.

Meant to post this earlier but didn't want to hijack thew local craft beer thread especially since they are not prominent in this type of voting.

I'm pretty sure you had a Pliny after the USF game that we lost in embarrassing fashion, but not sure if it was Pliny the Elder or Pliny the Younger. The bar we ended up at that night was one of the few to have access to Pliny.

I think you are right I might have tried one of those after remembering someone maybe Paul mentioning it here before that trip

Had a great burger and Fogbelt Atlas Blonde at Healdsburg Bar & Grill a few days ago and then tried the Fogbelt again today in the bottle. I know beer snobs typically don't like the blondes but I do. Love this one on a hot day.

Tried this one out. To me it tasted like a bubbly very dry, red wine. It did have a head though unlike a wine. Wasn't bad but I was expecting something more like Aunt Sally. When you pour this it is a really dark red/purple. Tried it once. Won't buy it again but not because it was so bad. Just not very interesting to me. Wasn't a "sour" in my book. Probably should call it a Weer or Bine...

I know this thread is about today's world of craft beers but how many here remember those beers from our military days when your choices were Bud, Miller, Shlitz, and PBR on base that were capped in cans only at 3.2? In country they were often free or as cheap as 20 cents per can. When I left Texas Coors was not sold east of the Mississippi so I loaded my trunk with 10 cases along with half dozen Lone Star.
Of course today we are blessed with hundreds of excellent craft beers but I still prefer a very common bitbier during the summer with Hoegaarden from Belgium as my favorite with an orange peel. ;)

Where were you stationed? My dad was Pleiku (sp?) Hey in high school those Mickey big mouths were a treat but would never turn down a Bud, Miller or whatever... Not that kids in high school should do that of course. I was a certified delinquent so don't copy my mistakes.

South Carolina, Texas, 3 month tdy overseas as a personnel officer mostly dealing with out processing of Vietnam assigned troops being sent back to the states. I was a non combatant and had extensive experience with beer and aromatic herbs. ;)

BTW, by coincidence, my first assignment officer was a West Point grad who played for Bobby Knight and he was shocked to know I remembered him from our St. John's rivalry. How many remember the Plebes and fellow cadets invading Alumni Hall?

My dad was first at Cheyenne then did processing too on base for both incoming and outgoing in Pleiku. He wouldn't talk about it too much but the base got attacked regularly and he had combat including agent orange exposure. He came back with a large assortment of the pins and ribbons that go on the chest of his uniform but I only got a few stories from him. When he came back he worked at Langley.

You should be very proud of your dad Paul. He served in the central highlands that were under constant attack by the Viet Cong coming in from Cambodia. Saigon, in the south was mostly spared until after the U.S. withdrawal. My ETS was in 1974 and we had withdrawn almost all our troops by 1973. We transported thousands via San Francisco and Texas where the 2nd Armored Division (mine) and the 1st Cavalry (Helicopter troops) was based.
Discussing beer is a much better subject. :)

Another Maher story ( I have witnesses ). Junior year in high school we get mickeys green grenades from a place in glen cove ( those weren't cheap ) we go to the islander game then come back to GC to drive around and meet friends ( 1987 ). We are all drunk, I get pulled over and we have all the beers in the front seat. Glen Cove has it's own police force and since my dad was chief of the volunteer Fire Dept he knew all the cops. As the 2 cops get out of the car i look and 1 is a family friend. He comes up to my door and says " Maher get out of the car and all your friends because none of you are 21. Then the other cop takes all out beers and puts them on the roof because they think the green grenades are cheap beer ( which they weren't) then he calls over the rookie cop and introduces me to him and he shakes my hand and the cop tells the rookie who I am and to never give me a problem ( again I have witnesses ) then they take way our empties and let us keep the full ones and all we had to do was go drink them at someones house. Tat wouldn't happen nowadays but it was nice back then

When I was 16 I snuck out pretty late at night with the car and let an unlicensed, un-learner's permitted 15-year-old friend drive. We of course got pulled over, but the cop let us off because "I have a piece off ass waiting for me after my shift." So if anyone knows an Officer Caldwell who would have been patrolling West Hempstead 30-something years ago, please send my regards. We weren't drunk, though -- just stupid.

But back on topic, I have friends that swear by 21st Amendment.

Glen Cove still had Irish living there in 1987?

Just picked up a case and a half of fresh Trillium yesterday... can't complain!

El Sully was really weak. They call it a "Mexican style lager" but no excuse. I like lighter, crisp beers but this was very disappointing. I'd prefer a Corona to this...
