Ben Howland out at UCLA

Selfishly, I like this for the BE (was worried about Buzz Williams). Alford is a decent recruiter and decent x and o guy. Decent is not in UCLA's vocabulary. Don't think this will end well. Good luck to Coach Alford,
 
Alford also bringing his son , a freshman guard which adds another guard to the crowded UCLA backcourt. That could help in the chase for Rasheed Jordan.
 
Just goes to show you that it doesn't matter if you signed a 10 year deal yesterday if the right job comes along
 
It's a job that requires you to recruit, though, and he's never seemed particularly fond of that.

He'd better bring in a great staff.

No lack of discipline now, at least with dealing with Mr. Harrison, right?

I had a different view of these comments about Lavin but, yours are certainly valid regarding Harrison.

i believed they were talking about on Court lack of discipline and defensive liabilities.. Which have some validity in his Coaching here. What many here refuse to acknowledge is that Lavin's deficiencies are well known in the Coaching and Media networks. SI had him listed as among the most overrated College Coaches last year, by his peers. He is still a Media Darling because they regard him as one of their own and his charismatic persona. He is very likeable without question.

Regarding Howland.. He will have many choices about where to go next or, do a year at ESPN.. Is Dixon going to replace his mentor at UCLA?

BTW, seeing Garrett get so much PT in this Virginia game and make so many turnovers and poor shots, suggests he should play Baseball FULL TIME. He is, at best, a capable 7th or 8th man, with limited PT.

Regarding Garrett coach will most likely let him know that he can't count on being a rotation player. It allows Amir to take whatever options he deems best for him. That's about the best coach can do. Coach Steve's team would looka lot better on the floor with a top point guard. That's always important, but most so with a green team.

Again, I saw Garrett play several games at Findley. And as I have mentioned over and over he scored mainly from rebounds on the weak side; not a shooter. I saw this, why didn't they?

If Amir was playing good D, Running the floor, rebounding and scoring off them, that would have been great and made him a solid rotation guy. The way he finished last year , it looked like we had a lot to look forward to with him. For whatever reason it didn't work out.

My concern would be that Howland to Rutgers would hurt both St. John's and Seton Hall's recruitment of local Jersey kids. With his track record and the Big Ten recently being perceived as the best hoops conference in the country, it could prove an issue for several Big East schools, Villanova as well, who recruit in the fertile recruiting state of Jersey.
 
While i agree that Howland to Rutgers would be potentially damaging to SJU in recruiting, I can't imagine Howland or anyone else is going to jump on the RU job this quickly. Any big time coach is going to want to wait it out to see if there will be any NCAA penalties handed down, and would probably also want to see who their boss (new AD) will be.

What Jersey kids have we been getting?
 
I think Lavin can recruit with the best of them. Much of Howland's ability to recruit had a lot to do with the name UCLA. That name helped in recruiting as much or more than the coaching staff. I do think Howland is a very good coach.

Let's not forget Billy Paultz, Willie "AC" Glass, Danny Gallagher (Class of 1975), and John Hempel, going back aways, were also Jersey guys..
