BE POY

While the season still has a long way to go , I thought it interesting to assess where our Posters think the POY is headed . The Primary Candidates are : Ponds, Howard , Booth and Powell. I am unabashedly in Ponds corner for all sorts of reasons . Last nights game was a perfect example of what Shamorie Ponds is all about : 26 points , 8 rebounds, 6 Assists , and I forget his number of steals , maybe 4 ? Whatever . Ponds is 3 rd in BE Scoring , first in Assists , first in Steals and might be the best rebounding guard in the BE . Howard is a great Scorer , Team leader , heady Player and the engine that drives Marquette . Powell is having a great year , 2 Nd in BE Scoring and a reason why SH is still a competitive team in current standings . Booth is Nova’s link to last year and this Year, along with Paschall is the Cats team leader with a All Around game and a clutch performer . So , who will be BE POY and why ?

SLY, agree that you have nailed the 4 candidates halfway through the BE season and I doubt that changes between now and year end. Best I can say is I couldn't get too upset if any of the 4 were chosen based on ytd results. Probably would have Powell slightly behind other 3 but that's just my view. Howard has rep of being just a scorer but he also averages 4 rebounds and 4 assists and is a phenomenal shooter. Booth is super clutch and probably most responsible for Nova's surge once BE play started. Shamorie is Shamorie. I do think it likely that a subpar league record by either Hall or SJU would hurt their candidate's chances for POY.

Howard's probably going to get it unless quette tanks but he's scorer of the year. Ponds' the "player" of the year because of his all around game. And I'd add Govan to the mix as well.

I agree Howard is a great Scorer and has a nice game all around . But , to me , Ponds does it all , except take the tickets at the Entrance . Marquette , right now , has a better record and that will influence how the BE Coaches will vote on POY . If I recall correctly , Ponds vs Howard match up , Head to Head has been all Shamorie all the time . Hope that continues next week . I liked what Casey Jacobsen on Fox said after the game when interviewing Ponds last night . He asked Shamorie which of the 2 roles he liked best , being the Playmaker for his teammates or being the guy who says , get out of my way and takes over a Game . Shamorie handle the question well saying he does what is best for his team . But, Jacobson concluded the interview saying that he liked the Ponds taking over the game role . That’s quite a compliment from a Player of Jacobson’s ability and career in College and the Pros .

Howard, being on a top two team helps in addition to obviously his tremendous scoring to date. Trying to be objective.

You can’t take it from Howard right now but still half the BE slate to go. One week can change everything and if you compare stats Ponds is better in nearly every category. Howard gets his 5 more points on 3 more shots with less efficiency.

Ponds is the better all around player. The way I see it, between ppg and apg, they're both responsible for about 32/33 ppg for their teams. Then you add the better rebounding and steals stats favoring Ponds and I'd say he's still POY. I'm also biased because he plays for us.

Phi Booth should be a candidate, too.

Myles Powell had 31 points last night, but he has some catching up to do, IMO.

Agree, btw, sly mentioned Booth in his opening post.;) :)

It really depends on how Nova and Marquette play against each other. If one team sweeps then their player will be POY. Ponds would have to go on a crazy run in order to win it. He should win the Haggerty.

It's unfortunate, but of course it will be Howard. He puts up the flashy scoring numbers. On the other hand, Ponds is leading the league in assists and steals, while still being 3rd in scoring. He's also shooting at a way higher percentage than Howard, and clearly makes those around him better.

The Haggerty is not a given either, IMO.

Justin Wright-Foreman averages 26.0 PPG for a Hofstra team that has won 16 straight (the longest active streak in the nation). He also does it fairly efficiently, 50.8% from the field, and 41.5% from three.

Myles Powell also needs to put up strong scoring numbers, if Seton Hall is to win, though he ranks a clear third in that race, right now.

Stony Brook is 17-5 this year with 10 road wins, but they don't have anyone who really stands out. Akwasi Yeboah is their best player, at 17.2 PPG, and 7.2 RPG. This year's field for the Haggerty Award is one of the stronger ones, IMO, so that's probably not enough to get serious consideration.

They are all worthy candidates, but in my biased view, no one does more to make his team better than Ponds.

You take Howard or Ponds off their teams and the teams are both screwed. We saw what one bad game for Howard did and we smoked Marquette.

Howard takes 3 more shots per game.
Ponds shoots better from field
Howard better from 3 and the line.
Ponds with the extra 1.5 apg.
Ponds with the extra steals and 1 less tpg

Ponds defers hence the assist numbers but there are many times he defers and they don't convert and a lot of those instances I wish he would just shoot it. Then the ppg would be even and I would say Ponds.

Nobody in the BE takes a game over like Shamorie.
When he’s healthy, when he’s in sync—which is most of the time—he’s the best player in the Big East.
But, I agree, for him to be acknowledged as such by the coaches, St. John’s will have to finish the season strong and advance to the final in the BET.

The voting for that is done before the Tournament. They usually announce the winners during the day on Wednesday, just before the tournament starts.

Oops didn’t realize that.
Well, then we have to beat Marquette next week and finish strong.
