B'Ball Schedule

 11 Garden dates.

Noticed that we scaled back to just 2 BE games. Wasn't there 3 or 4 last year?

I said that before when the BE schedule was announced at the end of June that I could not see any teams outside those two, PC and DePaul, being a Carnesecca team. The home slate looked stacked with teams that normally would be at the Garden, except for PC and DePaul. Last year it was USF, Rutgers, DePaul and Cincy at Carnesecca.

I cannot remember the last time SJU had any less then 3 league games at Carnesecca. Last year they had 4.

But if you look at it Syracuse, Louisville, ND, Georgetown, Villanova, WVU and Cincy those teams are either traditional MSG teams or in the case of Cincy too good to be a Carnesecca team this year. No choice really.

If I'm right about this, the season ticket package should consist of 10 CA games, and 9 MSG games (the championship rounds of the 2K Sports Classic are a seperate event, and I believe, not part of the ticket package).

I know they're hesitant, but it's time to sell a Garden package only.
BTW, heckuva deal for the students @ $99.

There is one choice actually. Competing for dates in an already crowded schedule with the Rangers and Knicks. Now of course the NBA is locked out but in their head they have dates set aside just in case. Could have stuck it to Cincy again but why not get the bigger crowd. I've always been big proponent of less CA games.

Once the season ticket base reaches a comfortable level they probably will have to. Until that time though try to push full seasons.

Most of you already know this, but no Jim Calhoun at the UCONN game against us. He will be serving his suspension.

Here's an article that's sure to ruffle some feathers here:

My point is it is more a product of who they are playing. Cincy last year if you remember surprised many, they were predicted to finish around 13th.

But for example if you put Louisville and WVU as away games and put USF and SHU as home games, guess what? You probably have 4 Carnesecca games again.

Games against the likes of Louisville, Syracuse, WVU, Georgetown, ND etc will NEVER be played at Carnesecca especially as long as coaches like Pitino, Huggins, Wright etc are walking the sidelines.

Can you imagine a Huggins coached team in a tiny gym like Carnesecca? Or ND and their huge subway alumni being asked to settle for a handful of tickets???? Not a chance.

I know all that and don't disagree. But they could have thrown Cincy there. But I guess two years in a row wouldn't look right. Plus bottom line we want the bigger gate. They are confident they can outdraw the 6k that CA would seat. That begs the questions why play any BE games on campus.

In a couple of years I don't think we will play any B.E games on campus.

My guess is when you factor in what the garden charges us to use MSG that the 2 games we play at CA still wouldn't draw that great yet at the garden so from a dollar and cents point of view it's still more profitable to the school to play them on campus.

That's just a guess by me though

at least 2 games will always be played at CA. It's much more family friendly AND i can't see senior night happening at the garden.

Which interestingly this year will only be for managers.

It's a dollars and cents issue. If we're drawing over 10K for our Garden games, it simply doesn't make sense to play many games at CA. Our attendance jumps a huge amount by just moving 2 Big East games to CA. We're rolling now and it only makes sense to capitalize. It improves our relationship with the Garden and brings money into SJU. This move alone assures that SJU's attendance numbers overall take a bit of a jump at the end of the season.

ESPKEN, how many BE games did we play at Alumini Hall in '85?

We played 6 BE games at Alumni Hall that year, only Georgetown and Syracuse at MSG.
We didn't start playing other conference teams at the garden until the 89-90 season.

I still get agita' thinking of '78 or '79 game at Alumni Hall against Syracuse, when the Cuse's Louis Orr blatantly ran right through a perfectly positioned Reggie Carter to score the game-winning basket as the game clock wound down, and the refs didn't call the obvious charge ... and it was on our own court!

Let's face it CA is a dinosaur - she looks better after the facelift - but she's still a dinosaur. With Lavin catapulting us into the forefront of college basketball how long before we get a 21st century arena?
