Bashir Ahmed to test NBA Waters

I expect Simon to be the starting point guard.
There will be plenty of PT to go around, but if someone is a super sub it will be Lovett.

I don't think he comes back if he's not starter.

Plus I've seen mixed opinions on whether Simon is PG material. He will be a deer running the floor, though, especially if playing alongside Ponds and LoVett.

This is absolutely the right move for any junior who is looking at a professional career. Why not have the best talent evaluators in the world critique your game? I hope he makes the most out of this potentially great learning experience.

I thought that's what the 2 hall of famers on the staff are for.

Completely unbiased opinions are probably more valuable.

He needs to know how to play with teammates, must improve his vision to locate open teammates that are properly located .when he is seams to be uncontrolled.
When driving he throws the ball like a brick

Needs to improve his shooting percentage as well.

This is a good move by Bashir. Let him get feedback and return.

I agree with JPM114 on Simon who I see as the sixth man. He is not starting over Ahmed or Lovett unless they are injured or can't show up on time.

I think a second recruiter is a priority at St. John's if we keep bringing on players with early departure intentions. The turnover of players in just two years is not a recipe for long term stability. Sima, Williams, Ellison, Freudenberg with family consultations to leave by Lovett and Ahmed and more on the horizon means that having a core 3 or 4 seniors may be a pipe dream. We need to balance the roster with a few kids that are talented but want to enjoy the college experience and have the patience to develop.
As for Ahmed, I am sure that the current staff has told him that he needs to cut down on his reckless play and improve his defense.

Regardless of who in the top 6 doesn't start (and I'm sure it will change multiple times), none of them need to worry about it because there are so many minutes available for all of them. Especially with it currently tracking that there won't be another potentially season-changing addition to next year's roster. The real issue will be making sure those 6 don't get burnt out by February, not who starts IMO.

The key is that all 6 are eligible and healthy. Losing any one of them for any portion of season would be a significant setback.

Regarding Bashir, he averaged 13 and 5 last year. In the last 16 seasons SJU has had 7 other players average 13 and 5: Marcus Hatten, Lamont Hamilton, DJ Kennedy, Mo Harkless, Jakarr Sampson, D'Angelo Harrison, and Dom Pointer. Of those only 3 - Hatten, Harkless, and Sampson - did it in their first year playing D1 hoops. That's pretty good company.

Recognize he can be out of control at times and hope that improves. But would rather have a player that is good at basketball be over-aggressive than a player that is not good at basketball play under control (a problem not foreign to this program). The consistency in his production last year was frankly remarkable especially for a first year player at this level.

He's physically dominant at the 3, has a quality skillset, brings it pretty much every game and am anticipating he'll make natural adjustments this coming year with a year of D1 under his belt as opposed to transitioning from JUCO.

One of the things we don't have to worry about going into next year is Bashir Ahmed's production, high floor and ceiling is Top 10 in the conference in both scoring and rebounding IMO. As it was he was 16th and 11th in those respective categories during Big East play. The only players that had better numbers than him in both categories were Hart, Delgado, and Bluiett. Think he had a very underrated season in some respects.

This is just a bizarre thread! Ahmed testing NBA waters-National Bong Association maybe?
Someone suggesting Lovett should not start.
What is next Norm Roberts coming back to be Mullin's bench coach?

I see that conversation being similar to this one:
Ty Webb: [to Al Czervik] Hey, don't put yourself down. You're not, uh... you're not... you're not good. You stink.

Norm could coach defense. So, maybe that could work! :silly:

I don't see, and will likely never see, what some of you guys see in BA. Put him on even an decent team and he probably averages 6 + 3 in far fewer minutes. Yeah he had nice stats, but he shot 39% from the field. He's the only kid on the entire roster, besides RF and including walk-ons, who shot under 40% from the field. At least a few of his boards every game came on his reckless drives to the hoop, where he at least had the wear-with-all to grab his own rebound. I'm not saying he didn't play hard, but all year I felt as though he was more concerned with showcasing himself than he was with winning. Maybe he comes back a far more disciplined player next year, but if there were a betting line on it, I know where my money is going.

Where would your money be going if his name was Bashirerrico Ahmedeo?

Monte, hear you, and points you note are valid. For me they just don't register as an issue facing the program. Sure BA may contribute less on a better team. And on a better team Mussini, Ellison, Williams, Alibegovic, and Fredenberg might not be on the team, and those guys made up half of our active scholarships during Big East play.

Our need to improve the talent level on this team is so substantial that I thought there was an inordinate amount of attention on BA's shortcomings given he can clearly compete and contribute at this level, when we have so many other guys with greater shortcomings that at a minimum are questionable in terms of ability to compete and contribute at this level. BA is clearly a net positive IMO and we need more net positives on this roster.

Disagree on the showcase point, felt just the opposite that at times especially when SJU was getting rocked and many seemed disinterested on the court BA seemed almost enraged by it and went harder, which was refreshing during some of our otherwise frustrating performances. Difficult for us to know which is the case I suppose.

I could have been more easily persuaded about the showcasing had he not decided to test the NBA waters now, but good for him if he can get paid. He's not a kid, which is part of the reason why I don't put much faith in him coming back as a much more disciplined ballplayer. Besides, with his freewheeling style, he may actually wind up being a better pro(somewhere) than college player.

Despite the criticism of Bash. We really need him for next year.

I think the criticism is warranted, and I agree that we need him. I hoping that with a more balanced team, he'll feel less of a need to take on as much of the scoring load and will let things come to him.

I think it's clear he'll be an important piece. I just think everyone is in agreement that an improved Basher will be necessary to take any kind of significant leap in record.
