I smell a deal coming!!!You looking to buy used, or new?
No, no deals. I was just going to make a suggestion based on prior experiences. I have had very good luck with both my Cherokee and my Cayenne. Unfortunately, you cannot get either of them for the money you are looking to spend new, but you can get high quality used versions in that price range.
Isn't the Cayenne a joint project with Volkswagen, built on the VW Toureg platform?
Actually, they are built on the same platform, but it was developed by Porsche, and they are vastly different once you lift the hood and look at the power plant that moves them. I have had mine for 6 1/2 years and 140,000 trouble free miles. I don't ever baby it, and I will get another one if I get another SUV.
