I'm in the market for some new wheels. And considering all the slipping and sliding of the past two winters, I am looking at something with AWD.

Budget is up to 25k. Any recommendations?

my 0.02 cents. Subaru Forester would be my choice. get the turbo version if possible.
good luck

Adding that my wife has a 2010 forester. I love driving it. Great for the weather here in chicago. And i hear the new ones have a better tranny.

You'll be tempted but believe me when I say that you should stay away from the 1971 Ford Pinto.

Thought about it and I agree. Not enough room in the center console to hold all my lobster rolls.

I agree. I have owned 7 Subarus and they are a really good value and excellent in the snow.

Ability to store lobster rolls is even more important than 4wd. I went 4 wd for the 1st time end of last year on a car and I'm stunned that I haven't bucked up for it before. What a difference it makes.

Although I still think my 1st car ever the 1972 chevy impala was the best that I have had in the snow. But then again if I hit something I wasn't worried because that car was so big and sturdy I was just gonna take out whatever I hit and keep driving

See if you can get a low mileage Audi A4 coming off lease, buy from the dealer get a certified vehicle and you'll get an extended warranty. You should be able to negotiate a good price.

I have 3 children plus I have custody of my niece and I drive my mother in law (I actually like her so I am in the minority for in laws) all the time. I can't go smaller but I guess I will look hybrid next time. Staten Island is only about 20 miles big but boy she goes end to end daily!

You looking to buy used, or new?
I smell a deal coming!!!

No, no deals. I was just going to make a suggestion based on prior experiences. I have had very good luck with both my Cherokee and my Cayenne. Unfortunately, you cannot get either of them for the money you are looking to spend new, but you can get high quality used versions in that price range.

Isn't the Cayenne a joint project with Volkswagen, built on the VW Toureg platform? In terms of a reliable and affordable SUV, Consumers Report loves the Subaru Outback far more than any other smaller SUV. I don't think you can go wrong with either Subarau, Honda, or Toyota in terms of reliability. Check the crash ratings - Hyundai and many others just got creamed (no pun intended) in recent safety tests. Also check the braking distance. A few years back the Escape had a breaking distance of 155 feet in tests, while the best models were at around 110 feet - could save your life.

I recently rented a Ford Escape while travelling on business, and was very pleasantly surprised. It traditionally lags the others mentioned in CR tests, but it had a solid feel to it, was appointed well, had good acceleration, mileage, and handled well.

You should visit various dealers (since the auto show has come and gone) to see how several models feel to you. To me some feel cramped or I don't like the controls or the displays.

You may also find that to get the model you want you may have to stretch your budget pre-tax to closer to $30K. If you are buying, you will have the car for 7 years or more, and the difference over time will diminish.
