Article On Who We Should Keep Playing

I wouldn't mind seeing us play Gonzaga, Indiana, and UNC (to name 3) on a somewhat regular basis..

That said, would not necessarily want to play them every season.

No reason to craft an overly brutal schedule. We do want to qualify for an NCAA bid after all.

Think all 3 would draw well at The Garden, especially if we were relevant nationally.

I have zero interest in scheduling Rutgers, Pitt, or Uconn.

The State University of NJ (aka Duke) and their fans arguably outdraws our fans although MSG is sold out.

If selling out The Garden is the objective, then The Blue Devils must be considered.

Don't mind UCLA (especially games at Pauley).

Huge number of Hoosier fans when they played in Brooklyn a month ago.

As I have mentioned before, I like the idea of us playing San Francisco, this year and next.

The West Coast Conference, has a lot in common with the new Catholic Conference as we know.

Mostly Catholic institutions and Basketball Schools for the most part.

Wouldn't mind seeing us scheduling a game versus one of those teams every year.

Road trips to Pepperdine (Malibu) or San Diego wouldn't be the worst thing to happen to us.

That said, home games for those squads, should be at CA, not MSG.

Plus we have been recruiting more and more young men from the West Coast since Steve has become coach.

I was thinking I would like gonzaga as well. Also Indiana would be nice. Hope we pick it back up with duke. Dont Want to make the schedule to tough however.

You personally may like the idea of us playing SF or other no-name WCC teams outside of Gonzaga (possibly to enhance your travel schedule), but those teams do nothing to help the RPI or reputation of our program. Given the significant travel time, the away games would be disruptive to our student athletes and likely detrimental (at best we get a win against a mid-major at worse a bad loss). If we're going to travel to Cali, let's play UCLA.

We should schedule a few cupcakes against the local teams and focus home and away series on a few of the big boys. Because our in-conference schedule will be weaker once we leave the Big East, we need to significantly beef up our out of conference schedule.

I'd like to see us in a major pre-season tournament every year and play three to four games outside of the conference consisting of any combination of the following: Syracuse; UConn; Duke; UCLA; Notre Dame; and Louisville. How about making the Holiday Festival a tournament again, invite Hofstra, a third local and a top team that wants to get a taste of NY. In the past, NC, Kansas, Memphis and G-Tech, among other heavyweights, have
played in the Holiday Festival.

Understand that we have had some discussions with schools such as Purdue, Illinois, Cal and Stanford about possible games in the future. Nothing in concrete at this point.

Also strong probability of us playing in Maui and The Bahamas in near future.

They all and good because they are significant national programs. I think the programs we must try to schedule are Syracuse, uconn, duke and ucla. All draw crowds and all have some history there.

Syracuse is going to happen as we know. Duke and The Bruins would be great.

IMO, UConn should be a non-starter. I could care less if we ever play them again.

IMO it would be disastrous for Uconn if we didn't schedule them at MSG any more. Especially after auriemma's comments, I certainly have no love lost for them. We just have history there.

I wouldn't mind playing Duke, UCLA, Syracuse, UNC, Notre Dame Home and Home ..That would be a
priority for future recruits coming to St John's..

I will say that with NYC and MSG, we have a distinct advantage in scheduling OOC games, so I know it won't be a problem bringing premier matchups to NYC. We are certainly in good position.

Cuse is a no-brainer. They are the other major conf New york team, and there is just too much tradition there to let it die. You could say we owe it to the college sports world to maintain this rivalry, in a era of rapid conference realignment, where traditional rivalries like Texas and A&M are broken, with more old rivalries likely to end.

I like the idea of renewing with Duke, but not every year. We should rotate them with UNC, Kentucky, UCLA, Indiana

What we should STOP doing is play multiple local mid-majors in the same season. Fordhan and St. Francis should not get matches in the same year. Lets rotate them with with Hofstra, St Bonaventure, Colombia. Just one per year.

Why? I prefer a game with St. Francis or Fordham to a game with UNC-Asheville or Florida Gulf Coast. I also think we should make the game before the Holidays at MSG vs Fordham a yearly thing. Believe it or not the Fordham game drew almost 3000 more people to the Garden than the ND game did.

Fordham? Really? Does nothing for us...

I'm not advocating a home and home with them but as far as playing a local team they are the best draw for a game at MSG.

I like the idea of playing some locals in the early season: Fordham, Manhattan, Niagara, Hofstra, FDU, Fairfield. Adding those to an early season tournament and a power team or two (Syracuse, Duke) would make a good schedule before league play.
